Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Snatchwood? Don't Start It

Do not turn on your engine. If the petrol is still in your tank and your engine has not run, a tank drain is almost always all it needs — and that's settled in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they sit, all over Snatchwood and the remainder of Torfaen, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. Call us before anything else happens, and you will see what comes next.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine enough for a couple of miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never start the vehicle. And if started, don't believe it: the fuel system is wearing as you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it burns it lubricates — the high-pressure fuel pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition be too: switching it on is usually sufficient to prime your system, and priming draws petrol from that tank into precisely those components.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It won't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you have is a larger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • We'd sooner get to a tricky place than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to sort out than a motor that has not shifted. On the verge on Pleasant Court, that means hazards on and keep the vehicle.
  • Before you ring, get your position. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting NP4 6 — that is what decides whether the technician turns up or circles.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Tell us what went in, roughly how much, and whether your car has fired. These three replies determine the full call-out.

Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Passat, left outside Pontypool and New Inn since this morning? The day has cost you nothing — fuel in a tank is dormant. It was the run in that pushed weakened diesel through the pump. Phone us before you fetch the car.

Twenty to nine. Outside the local primary school. Late already, and your receipt in your hand says unleaded. Put the hazards on, leave your motor alone, then ring us. You might think three miles is nothing, in your Ford Focus or anything else — except that fuel is metered to demand, and a drive taken in a hurry needs a great deal of it.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not just burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built bleeds past gaps instead, leaving the motor a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was designed about. Petrol thins diesel, and diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the close-fitting parts it passes through — that is the whole mechanism. It accounts for the normal Freehold Wood call too: a diesel Peugeot 3008 that went out without complaint and came back down on power, rough at idle, possibly smoking a little. None of which is your engine failing, and that is the bit worth hearing. The fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put the fuel right and it stops.

Clattering? Ragged idle? White smoke, throttle gone limp? That's your misfilled Mercedes GLC, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, maybe near Ebenezer Chapel, then leave the restarting alone.

Purged, not cleared — that is what a diesel Renault Captur which got as far as Ebenezer Centre needs. Running a diesel puts the mixture into your filter, the fuel lines, your pump and the rail, none of which empties with the tank, and so by now that tank holds the smaller part of the problem.

Can petrol be taken out of your diesel at a forecourt?

The work kicks off at a forecourt, usually. Often enough it ends on site as well. The drain typically gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at Texaco? Given the station's agreement, that's a place our engineers work, and often.

At a forecourt, the mistake is caught with the motor never fired, and no place else does it. Our technicians can still put it right where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been started and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to go past the tank to the lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for your key are what decide that.

The attendants will usually help you push it clear of the petrol pump so the next customer can get through. That's worth doing. Cranking the car over four car lengths? Never.

Will our engineers cover your end of Snatchwood?

Snatchwood is a residential suburb, and so our technicians are out to it and to anywhere around it on those same rounds: Pen-twyn, Freehold Land, Charlesville, Prospect Place and Pentrepiod.

If yours isn't on this list it does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for most places in Torfaen, and the ones named above are merely the nearest neighbours. Close to the boundary, or anywhere a satnav misreads? Ring us to ask instead of presuming.

The map is the ground this page includes. Our technicians work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of it, and your car does not need to travel to us.

Stopped by the kerb somewhere around Snatchwood?

Not everybody has the opportunity to stop anywhere safe. Set off, then twigged? Finished up on the verge of Snatchwood Road, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards going? That's a routine call here. Not an odd one.

Remain with the vehicle while it's sensible to sit in it, yet clear of the vehicle if it isn't. Never restart the motor to limp the vehicle somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mixture further into your fuel system. We'll send the van to an inconvenient spot without any fuss, and for the vehicle that is much better than driving on.

Driven it already? Stop, and see this

under 10 miles from Snatchwood, your M4 is what matters now. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, instead of a neat stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Never restart it to move it. Pull off at the next safe junction and turn off. Long drive? Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the mixture. Say that on the call, because it changes what goes in the van.

Where's Snatchwood?

Snatchwood is a suburban area in Torfaen, situated on the riverside with an elevation of around 170 metres. Snatchwood lies near the cities of Newport and the surrounding communities of Pen-twyn and Charlesville. Snatchwood has a mix of housing types, but is predominantly characterised by terraced homes. Snatchwood is located approximately 9.6 miles from Newport and 126.5 miles from London.

The visit around Snatchwood, step by step

  • Our technicians ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has the engine run? Those replies shape what the work really is.
  • That tank is emptied of it.
  • Our engineers clean the fuel lines and clear your filter, so what is remaining in the fuel system is not what caused the problem.
  • The system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • It is started with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it is running correctly.

At that point it is ready to set off. We do everything wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and if it has been noticed soon, it's very rare for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Snatchwood?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the engine remains off — while the issue underneath it is a distinct one altogether. Petrol thins the diesel and removes the protection the fuel system relies on. Rust and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Snatchwood page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Snatchwood costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

We cannot put one price on this page frankly, as the job isn't one job. What shifts it:

  • This is the main one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us the car, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer instead of a range. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and is not urgent, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Snatchwood drivers

At a petrol station in Snatchwood, can you do a fuel drain there?

A large portion of this work gets done there, so yes. Our technicians attend another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the station's consent — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Driving is what takes the problem from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it is salvageable much more often than drivers assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to remain off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has diluted is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a distinct issue. So no. Your tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to cope with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

Is the car still with you?

Never turn it on again.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it. A parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than people fear.
