Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Snow Hill?

Don't start the engine. If the petrol is still sitting in the tank and the motor has not been started, a drain is almost always all it requires — and that gets decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they are, throughout Snow Hill and the remainder of Bedfordshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive. Our engineers shall explain what the following part will be. Ring us — it goes before anything else.

Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will normally refuse to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it drives off — all right for a few miles. Drivers have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not start the vehicle. And once started, do not depend on it: your fuel system is grinding as you drive.
  • Switching the ignition on frequently primes your system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of your tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the ignition alone.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Sit tight if it is wise to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Carthagena Road, anywhere — an odd spot for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is quicker for us to sort than a motor that never moved.
  • Keep your location ready before you dial. A postcode that starts SG19 2 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between the van turning up and our van circling.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what went in, approximately how many litres, plus if the car has fired. These three details decide the whole job.

Petrol in a diesel Renault Clio, left at Sandy since first thing? The day has lost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is dormant. It was the run in that drew thinned diesel through the pump. Ring us before you move the vehicle.

Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel Skoda Octavia, a few litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off outside Tesco now. Time passed is not the thing we need. Fuel drawn by the pump is.

Your Audi A4 stays where it is in the car park outside Potton and District Club for the whole job, which usually runs like this. First our technicians ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has run since, given that much of the work depends on those replies. That tank is emptied of the contaminated mixture, the lines are rinsed, and the filter comes off if it's a replaceable one. With new diesel in and the fuel system bled, the vehicle is fired up and tested, and once it is running correctly you set off.

New spots are where this happens most, and the reason is mechanical not careless: the slimmer petrol nozzle goes into a newer diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all. Topped up close to Potton Library without thinking, in a diesel Kia Sportage you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anyone realises, and distance is what decides how much petrol ends up at your injectors.

What takes place next is the problem. The engine at once pulls the petrol still sitting in the fuel filter and the feed lines back round through the pump a second time, because draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put clean diesel in, a person sure of themselves will tell you — and that suggestion is half true, as do it to a diesel Volkswagen Polo parked up, Potton Town Council Community Centre say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound plausible. Call us instead. Our technicians flush the circuit and take your filter off where the car has a workable one, and that's the difference between your car being put right and your car only starting.

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

A large share of the work is completed at a pump, because that is where it usually starts. The drain usually gets done on the spot. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the owner's permission, that's a spot we work, and routinely.

A filling station is the only location this gets halted before the engine has started. The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for the key settle how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was started and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter require rinsing as well as the tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still sort it out where your car stands.

Clear of the pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the staff help you wheel the vehicle. Worth doing. Starting the car just to roll four car lengths is not.

Coverage around Snow Hill

Those same runs get us to Sutton, Potton, Everton, Stratford and Gamlingay Great Heath besides Snow Hill, which is a rural hamlet.

Our technicians still come. The names above are just the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of locations around Bedfordshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Near the border, or anywhere a satnav can't find? Ring us to check instead of guessing.

The patch the page includes appears on this map. Our technicians work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and your vehicle never needs to move to us.

Broken down at the roadside near Snow Hill

Not everyone gets the opportunity to pull in somewhere suitable. Set off, then twigged? Ended up by the verge of Deepdale, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That is a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Stay with your car when it is safe to wait inside, but out of it if it isn't. Do not fire up your engine to limp the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that mix further into your fuel system. However tricky the location, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that is far better for the vehicle than driving on.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

under 10 miles out of Snow Hill, the A1(M) is what matters now. A misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they come are normally lost power, a lumpy idle and some smoke rather than a clean stop.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer drive — anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you ring. It changes what our technicians bring.

About Snow Hill

Snow Hill is a small hamlet in Bedfordshire, situated inland at an elevation of 36 metres, and is located near the villages of Sutton, Potton, and Everton. Snow Hill lies within commuting distance of Cambridge, which is 16 miles away, and is also within reach of London, 43 miles to the south. Snow Hill has a population of around 566 people and predominantly consists of semi-detached housing. Snow Hill is a residential community in a rural setting, surrounded by the Eastern region's countryside.

What we do when we get to you in Snow Hill

  • We find out what was put in, how much, and if your engine has run. The answers change the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.
  • Out flows the contaminated mixture.
  • We purge your fuel lines and clean your filter, so what's left in the system is not what created the problem.
  • The system gets primed, on clean diesel.
  • Our technicians start it and check it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

From there, you're ready to set off. All of this is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been caught soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Snow Hill AdBlue removal is a different matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — the engine stays off — whereas this fault under it is a different one altogether. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and residue instead.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Snow Hill page. Both are ours to deal with.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Snow Hill

What changes the figure is laid out below, because this job isn't one job and we can't frankly put a single price on this page.

  • Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the key one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much the tank takes.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your vehicle is, and whether a van can sensibly get to and work on it.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and if your engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.

Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in Snow Hill

I am on a forecourt in Snow Hill. Can you drain it here?

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this takes place. Often, provided the site consents: Sainsbury's, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that place is something our engineers answer there and then.

Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving takes the problem along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly valuable thing left to you is not restarting it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain and flush carried out properly is not a modification and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to remain off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a different issue from a separate era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind puts back. Your pump still has to cope with it, as your tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.

Still with the car?

Never switch the car back on.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, switch off, then let the car stay that way. A still, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than motorists fear.
