Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Snow Hill?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, all over Snow Hill and the remainder of Cheshire. The first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. While the engine has not yet turned over and the fuel is still sitting in that tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much went in. Ring us before anything else starts, and you'll see what happens from there.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Don't crank it. Fired up anyway? Then don't rely on it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally will not run, and so the person stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away fine, for a couple of miles. People get that muddled. It is not fine — that fuel system is grinding every mile you cover.
  • Flicking the ignition on often primes that system, and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition alone.
  • Do not thin it. Diesel added on top takes out nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • A motor that hasn't moved is the quickest one to sort, so wait where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on Water Lode? Hazards on, and keep the vehicle there. An awkward spot suits us better than a started motor.
  • Before you call, get your position. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting CW5 5 — that is what determines whether the technician arrives or circles.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what was put in, roughly how many litres, plus whether the engine has been run. Those replies decide all that follows.

At a forecourt: clearing petrol from your diesel

A big chunk of this work is done at the pump, because that is where it mostly starts. If you're still at the forecourt at Morrisons, that is typically where this drain gets done — we operate on station forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement.

Before the engine has fired — the forecourt is the single place it gets caught. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a calamity, and our engineers can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the key.

Attendants will normally chip in pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get through. Accept the assistance. Cranking it just to shift four car lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Snow Hill

If you've put petrol in the diesel Volkswagen Passat around Snow Hill and you're now sat at M&S Foodhall with a boot loaded with shopping, phone us. Never crank it once more to get out of the bay. We will head your way, clear your tank, clean those fuel lines then put fresh diesel in so you can head home. A mile or so at easy throttle uses little of it, which is why these tend to be the straightforward jobs.

What we'll ask is whether the trip there was brief and chilly, since that's where petrol is slowest to burn properly — and whatever does not burn can work past the rings and into the sump. Right up to the moment someone takes it home, a diesel Nissan Qashqai sitting in the parking area at Black Lion holding a tank of petrol in it is a simple job. Nothing worsens whilst it sits, so leave the car there overnight and ring us next morning.

Out there normal, back gutless. If that was the trip to Nantwich Walled Garden, look at that tank. Diesel gets weakened by petrol, and thin fuel seeps past the tight tolerances meant to build injection pressure — so every further mile the diesel Ford Focus covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, turn off, ring us.

Why so firm about leaving the keys alone? Because your pump is upstream of the injectors, and a wearing one sends whatever it loses on with the fuel. Call us. Leave the Mercedes E-Class close to Jabbin Dabber.

Authorisation first, where there is a hire firm or a company behind the vehicle — some agreements insist on it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, ring us about your diesel Audi A6 near Great Fire of Nantwich. You'll not know how full the tank was. Scarcely anybody does, two days into a car, and it gets worked out on site anyway. We ask since the damage petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in an almost empty tank make a much stronger mix than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is designed to resist igniting under pressure, which is precisely what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the engine rattles and smokes and flattens off.

Areas our vans cover around Snow Hill

Nantwich, Acton, Rease Heath, Butt Green, Burford — all of these on our journeys that carry us out to Snow Hill too, a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on the list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are separate pages for the majority of towns in Cheshire, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours. Close to the boundary, or anywhere the satnav can't find? Ring us and ask instead of assuming.

Look at our map for the area shown on this page. Your vehicle never needs to travel to us. Our technicians work across every bit of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Broken down at the kerbside in Snow Hill

A chance to pull in anywhere safe doesn't come to everyone. Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Cross Wood Street since you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call so often that it is the usual kind.

Okay where you are? Remain beside it. Not fine? Climb out and clear of it. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the problem: restart the vehicle to reach somewhere handier and that mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. We'll take the van to a difficult spot without any fuss, and for the car that is much better than driving on.

Driven it already? Stop, then read below

Here is where the local M6 counts, under 10 miles from Snow Hill. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power falls away, your idle turns rough, and there may be smoke.

Never start it to move it. Come off at the next safe exit and switch off. Presume the worst of that on a long run. Anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through your pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you call. What our technicians bring changes.

About Snow Hill

Snow Hill is a suburban area in Cheshire, situated on the riverside at a relatively low elevation of 36 metres. Snow Hill lies near several smaller settlements, including Nantwich, Acton, and Rease Heath, and is within commuting distance of Stoke-on-Trent. Snow Hill has a population of around 6029 people, predominantly living in terraced housing. Snow Hill is located in the North West region of England, approximately 148 miles from London.

What our engineers do when we arrive with you around Snow Hill

  • We check what was put in, how much, and if your motor has run. The replies shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing.
  • Out comes the polluted fuel.
  • We clean the fuel lines and clean the filter, and so what is remaining in your system isn't what started the trouble.
  • Your system gets primed, on new diesel.
  • The motor is started and tested to be sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

That has it ready to drive away. All of this is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, long-term damage is very rare.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Snow Hill?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your engine remains off — whereas this problem beneath it is a different one altogether. Petrol thins your diesel and strips the protection the system depends on. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Snow Hill page. Both are ours to handle.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Snow Hill

One price would not be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

  • Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for a van.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and if the engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. For the car at home that's going nowhere and isn't time-critical, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Snow Hill drivers

Fuel drains on a Snow Hill petrol station forecourt

A big share of this work happens there, so yes. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Sainsbury's is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there's possible.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. It is fixable much more regularly than drivers assume, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't an alteration and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to live with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, since our technicians drain and flush your car wherever it is.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Leave the engine shut off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting it after that. A stationary, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more regularly than people expect.
