Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in South Hiendley?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, all over South Hiendley and the rest of West Yorkshire. The very first thing to do is not to start the motor. When your engine has not yet run and the fuel is still in your tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much was put in. Phone before everything else starts, and you will see what follows after that.

Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Never fire it up. Started anyway? Then never trust it. Diesel in a petrol motor generally will not run, and so the motorist stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off normally, for a couple of miles. Most people get that muddled. It's not okay — the fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it burns it greases — the injection pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition be too: turning it on is usually enough to prime your system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into exactly those components.
  • Do not add diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage in the way that advice suggests, and topping up removes nothing — it just gives you a larger tank of the same mixture. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that hasn't moved is the quickest one to deal with, and our team would rather travel to a tricky location than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Main Street, switch the hazards on and keep the car there.
  • Check where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning S72 9, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the van circles instead of arriving.
  • Three answers decide the whole job: the fuel you tipped in, the approximate quantity of it, and if anything has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Quarter past eight. A rushed top-up on the road in. Around eleven it occurs to you, and by then your diesel Volkswagen Golf has sat at Fitzwilliam for three hours. Call us and keep the vehicle where it stands. What counts is the drive in, since diesel both combusts and — before that — protects your pump and your injectors, while petrol only ever burns. Those couple of miles worked the pump on a liquid stripped of most of its protection, and no volume of standing in a car park puts any of that back. Hence the question about mileage rather than hours sitting, and hence the request to leave the keys be till our engineers get there.

You will be urged to shift the vehicle clear of that gateway and sort it out later. Do not. On the zig-zags at South Hiendley Primary School, a misfilled BMW 3 Series running on diesel is in the way, and that's all it is. Start it three more times being helpful and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime pulls more petrol through your filter towards the pump. Let them moan. Phone.

What we'll ask is if the trip there was brief and chilly, because that's where petrol is least able to burn fully — and what does not burn can slip past the rings then into the engine oil. Right up to the moment someone takes it home, a diesel Peugeot 308 sitting in the car park by Sun Inn carrying a tank full of petrol in it is a simple job. Nothing degrades whilst it stands, and so park the vehicle there overnight then ring us first thing.

Do not drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst the vehicle sits, because a diesel Dacia Duster left at Cawker Wood is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.

A throttle gone soft, white smoke, a ragged idle, rattling: that is a misfilled diesel Ford Kuga telling you what is wrong. Do not start the car to find a better location — turn off where you have stopped, near Havercroft & Rhyhill Sports & Youth Centre or anywhere else.

On the forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

Most of the work starts at a pump, which means a large share of it is done at one. Still at Tesco? Then that is generally where it takes place. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the site.

At the forecourt, the mistake gets caught with the engine never fired, and nowhere else manages it. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from that tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where it is. It does mean the lines and the filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for your key.

Attendants will generally chip in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get through. Accept the offer. Four car lengths is not worth a restart.

South Hiendley and the areas next to it

Felkirk, Havercroft, Shafton, Ryhill, Newstead — all of these on our trips that carry us across to South Hiendley itself, a rural village.

There are separate pages for most towns around West Yorkshire, and the ones named above are just the immediate neighbours — so yours being left off the list means nothing about whether our engineers come. Assuming is the habit to resist, especially on the boundary or somewhere your phone gets lost. Ring us and check.

That map marks the area the page covers. Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of it is ground we cover, and none of that asks your car to travel to us.

South Hiendley: stranded where you stopped

Not everybody finds a safe spot to pull in. If you realised after setting off and landed on the verge beside Kirkgate Lane, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that is a normal call for us rather than an unusual one.

Wait with the motor when it is sensible to wait inside, and out of it when it's not. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the problem: fire it up to get to somewhere better and that blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile travelled. We will send the van to an inconvenient location without any bother, and for your car that's far better than pressing on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where the M1 counts, under 10 miles away from South Hiendley. A loss of power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the first junction that's sensible, stop there, and don't restart the vehicle to move it. Long trip? Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the mixture. Say that on the call, as it changes what goes in our van.

Where's South Hiendley?

South Hiendley is a small village in West Yorkshire, situated approximately 6.5 miles from Wakefield and 154.8 miles from London. South Hiendley has a population of around 630 people, predominantly living in detached housing.

Our call-out in South Hiendley, step by step

  • We check what got in, how much, and if your engine has run. The responses alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.
  • Out goes the polluted mixture.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever is left afterwards is not the thing that created the trouble.
  • The system gets bled, on clean diesel.
  • Your engine is started and tested to make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That has the car ready to pull away. Our technicians do all of it wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, it's very rare for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in South Hiendley?

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first instruction is the same — never fire it up — but the fault isn't. The lubrication a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which thins the diesel. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and build-up in its place.

Our technicians deal with both, and AdBlue removal around South Hiendley has its own page with the full story — including why it is frequently the more significant of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs in South Hiendley

What changes the figure is laid out below, as the job is not one job and our technicians can't truthfully put a single number on this page.

  • This is the big one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much the tank takes.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's safe for our van.

Tell us the car, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer instead of a range. Not urgent, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Petrol in diesel questions from South Hiendley motorists

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in South Hiendley?

Yes, and it's where a good portion of this work happens. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like JET is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear if working there is possible.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It hinges on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is if that mixture has been pulled through the fuel system.

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. It is salvageable far more frequently than drivers expect, even though driving is what moves the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. That tank still has petrol in it later, and the pump still has to put up with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There's no need to bring it to a dealership, as our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

Waiting next to it?

That engine remains off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off and leave it off. A still, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more commonly than motorists assume.
