Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in South Lynn? Don't Start It

Never start your engine. While the petrol is still in that tank and the motor has not been started, a tank drain is almost always all it takes — and that is settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they stand, across South Lynn and the remainder of Norfolk, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Our team will show you what the following stage is. Contact us — this comes ahead of everything else.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

  • Don't crank it — and never rely on it if it does start. That is the bit most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine filled with diesel normally just cannot run, so the motorist stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel fed petrol normally starts, ticks over and drives off perfectly well for a couple of miles. It isn't fine. It is wearing that fuel system as you drive.
  • Leave the car's ignition off also. Diesel does two roles: it ignites, and before it burns it lubricates the high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Turning the ignition on is usually sufficient to prime your system, which draws the petrol out of the tank and into precisely those parts.
  • Do not put diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage as that advice implies, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it simply gives you a larger tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to sort out, so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Proctors Close? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. An odd spot works for us better than a started motor.
  • Know where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts PE30 5, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of arriving.
  • Three details determine the whole visit: the liquid you poured in, the ballpark volume of it, and if anything has been going since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

On a forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel

The work begins at a forecourt, typically. Frequently the job wraps up on site too. If you are still on the forecourt at Shell, that's generally where this drain takes place — we operate on station forecourts routinely, with the station's agreement.

Nowhere but the forecourt can the mistake be caught with the motor still cold. Fuel sucked out of your tank and through the filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the engine is fired up and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the filter and the fuel lines together with your tank. That's still not a calamity, and we sort it out where the car is. What decides it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was checked.

Out from the pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the staff help you push the car. Well worth doing. Moving the car four bays does not warrant starting it.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in South Lynn

Areas our team reach near South Lynn

South Lynn is a residential suburb, and so we go out to the town and to the areas near it on those same rounds: Kings Lynn, Hardwick, St James End, Highgate and West Lynn.

If yours is not on that list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are separate pages for most locations in Norfolk, and the ones listed above are just the closest neighbours. Phone to ask instead of assuming, especially when you are on the border or anywhere the satnav can't find.

Use this map for the patch included here. Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of that is territory we cover, and none of that needs the vehicle to come to us.

You will be advised to shift the car clear of that gateway and sort it out later. Please don't. On the zig-zags outside St Michael's Church of England Academy, a wrongly fuelled Skoda Octavia running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Crank it three more times being helpful and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime drags more petrol through the fuel filter on to your pump. Let them grumble. Phone.

Fine on the way out, gutless on the way back. If that is how that drive to Sandpiper Way Park went, your tank is where to look. Petrol thins diesel, and runnier fuel leaks past the precision parts that are meant to build injection pressure — so the further the Nissan Qashqai drove, the less well it held that pressure. Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off then ring us.

Draining your Audi A4, changing your filter where there is a workable one, cleaning your lines, putting fresh fuel through the full circuit: that's this job, and it's shaped by the worst of that resting in the fuel lines rather than in the tank by this point. Three things help when you call from near South Lynn Community Centre — which side the filler is on, whether our van can pull up alongside without blocking the road, and if your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common spot our engineers work, so the location itself is hardly ever the trouble. A cramped parking bay beats a motor driven somewhere more handy.

Rattling, a lumpy idle, white smoke, a throttle gone limp. That's a misfuelled diesel Ford Focus telling you what's wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, close to Kings Lynn Baptist Church or anywhere else, and do not start the car to find a better spot.

No warning light exists for this, which is why vehicles in that position normally get driven a second time before somebody calls. Do not be one of them. The throttle went soft and your idle turned lumpy after a couple of streets, and the diesel Mercedes A-Class is now sitting near Whale. Sluggishness there means fuel that can't build pressure properly instead of an engine failing. Switch off. Phone us.

South Lynn: stuck wherever you pulled up

Not everyone gets the chance to pull over anywhere sensible. Set off, then twigged? Ended up on the verge beside Burney Road, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazards on? That's a routine call here. Not an unusual one.

Out of your car when it isn't wise to be there, by it if it is. Don't fire up your motor to limp the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mix further into the fuel system. A technician coming to a tricky place is no problem for us, and it is much better for the car than carrying on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

Here is where your A1(M) comes in — under 50 miles away from South Lynn. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. It alters what our technicians bring, so say so when you call: on a longer trip — anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and the injectors.

South Lynn itself

South Lynn is a suburban area located on the coast of Norfolk, with a low elevation of around 4 metres above sea level. South Lynn sits near the town of Kings Lynn and other nearby places such as Hardwick and St James End, forming part of the larger urban landscape. South Lynn has a population of approximately 3324 people, predominantly living in terraced housing. South Lynn is situated near the city of Ely, which is around 24 miles away, and is also within commuting distance to London, being around 88 miles from the capital.

The job in South Lynn, step by step

  • Our engineers find out what went in, how much, and if your engine has run. The answers shape the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.
  • Away comes the polluted fuel.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later on isn't the thing that caused the problem.
  • We put fresh diesel in and bleed your system.
  • The motor is started and tested to make sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away. There is no need for a garage at any point, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it is caught quickly, permanent damage is very rare.

A separate job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in South Lynn

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the motor remains off — whereas this issue underneath it is a distinct one altogether. The protection a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own South Lynn page. Both are ours to deal with.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in South Lynn

Frankly, no single price fits on a page like this. The job varies. Here's what varies it:

  • Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the big one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much that tank holds.
  • The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where the vehicle is, and whether a technician can safely get to and work on it.

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and if it has run. Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

South Lynn motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

I am on a forecourt in South Lynn. Can you drain it here?

Yes — forecourts are where a big part of this happens. Often, provided the site consents: Tesco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something we answer on the spot.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether your motor has run matters much more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. It is fixable a lot more often than motorists expect, even though driving is what shifts the problem from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It's not a modification, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to stay off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a different issue from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. Your tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to live with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There's no need to bring it to a dealership, because our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is.

Standing next to it?

Leave the car shut off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, switch off, then let it stay that way. This is recoverable from a lot more commonly than people fear, and a still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
