Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in South Nutfield? Don't Start It

With the tank still carrying the fuel and your engine not yet started, nearly every job needs only a drain, so leave the motor off. That result is determined in the minutes right after filling up, and not by the amount that got in. All over South Nutfield and the remainder of Surrey, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Call us and our engineers can tell you what comes from here before you try much else.

What to do now about petrol in a diesel

  • Do not crank it. Fired up anyway? Then never trust it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally won't run, so the motorist stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off fine, for a few miles. People get that reversed. It's not fine — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you cover.
  • Flicking the ignition on frequently primes the system, and priming is what draws petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol handles the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition off.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice implies — so do not tip diesel on top to water down it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that hasn't moved is the simplest one to deal with, and we'd rather drive to a tricky location than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Mid Street, turn those hazards on and keep it there.
  • Before you call, have your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode beginning RH1 5 — that's what decides whether our van turns up or circles.
  • Three replies determine your whole visit: the fuel you put in, the approximate amount of it, and whether anything has been turning since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Do not take it home. The drive in has already forced a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of your Volkswagen Passat, and the drive back would about double it for no reason at all. Ring us from the platform if that's handier. Our technicians don't need you hovering over the vehicle outside Nutfield while our technicians work, and our team would far rather hear from you tonight than realise on Monday.

Twenty to nine. By Nutfield Church CofE Primary School. Late already, and the till receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Turn the hazards on, leave your engine alone, then ring us. You may think three miles is nothing, in your Peugeot 308 or anything else — except that fuel is supplied on demand, and a drive taken in a rush needs a great deal of it.

Straightforward job, this one — till somebody drives it home. A diesel Ford Focus parked outside The Station with petrol in the tank loses nothing by sitting there overnight, so leave the car and phone once it's light. Expect a question about that drive there, though. Short and cold is exactly where petrol fails to burn, and what will not burn can get past the rings and into the oil.

Rarely the issue, the spot. On-street is the most common spot we work, and a tight parking bay is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you ring from near South Nutfield Village Hall, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can stand alongside without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then your Audi A6 gets emptied, the fuel filter changed where a serviceable one exists, the fuel lines cleaned and clean fuel put through the whole circuit — since by now the worst of that is in the fuel lines, not that tank.

Fixed and starting aren't the same thing, and the difference is the system: our technicians flush it, and take your filter off where there's a working one. Compare that with the sure of themselves advice you'll get — drain the car, refill with fresh diesel. Only half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Mercedes GLC near Nutfield Memorial Hall and it will start, which is precisely why the advice sounds plausible. Then the engine sucks the petrol left behind in the fuel filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, since draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead.

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

The work begins at a pump, typically. Quite often the work finishes on site too. If you're still at the forecourt at BP, that's usually where the drain gets done — our technicians work on station forecourts routinely, with the owner's consent.

At a forecourt, this is caught with your motor never started, and nowhere else does that. Fuel sucked out of that tank and through your filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when your engine is fired up and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and the lines along with that tank. That's still not a calamity, and we put it right where the vehicle stands. What decides it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was read.

The attendants will generally happily wheel it clear of the petrol pump so the next motorist can get past. That's worth doing. Cranking it just to move four vehicle lengths isn't.

Service around South Nutfield

Ridge Green, Nutfield, Whitebushes, Bletchingley, South Earlswood — every one of these on our trips that bring us over to South Nutfield too, a village.

There are dedicated pages for most towns across Surrey, and the ones named above are merely the closest neighbours — so yours being left off that list tells you nothing whatsoever about whether our engineers come. Close to the border, or somewhere your phone misreads? Phone and ask rather than guessing.

This map marks the patch this page covers. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: all of it is territory we serve, and none of that needs your vehicle to come to us.

Roadside breakdowns across South Nutfield

A chance to pull in anywhere safe does not fall to everybody. If you realised after setting off and finished up by the verge on Cricket Hill, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that's a routine call for us rather than an unusual one.

Wait by the motor if it is wise to be in it, but out of the car if it is not. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the catch: restart the vehicle to get to somewhere safer and the blend goes further into the system with every mile driven. Pressing on causes the vehicle far more harm than a technician coming out to an awkward place, and that is no problem for us.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

Here is where the M23 comes into it — under a mile from South Nutfield. A misfilled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they arrive are typically a drop in power, an uneven idle and smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Don't restart it to reposition. Pull off at the first safe junction and turn off. Long drive? Anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the phone, since it affects what goes in the van.

Our visit in South Nutfield, step by step

  • We establish what got in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The replies shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting.
  • Away flows the contaminated fuel.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains afterwards isn't the thing that caused the issue.
  • We put new diesel in and prime the fuel system.
  • After it is fired up, we check it runs correctly on new diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away. There is no need for a garage at any point, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's noticed soon, long-term damage is very rare.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around South Nutfield is a separate problem

The fault is not the same, though the first rule is — don't fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There is a separate South Nutfield page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

South Nutfield pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Truthfully, no single price belongs on a page like this. This job differs. Here's what varies it:

  • Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the main one.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that proportion.
  • Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is safe for a van.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear instead of as a range. For the car at home that's going nowhere and is not urgent, works too.

Questions our engineers hear about petrol in diesel around South Nutfield

Fuel drains on a South Nutfield petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this takes place. Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there. With the site's consent our engineers work at Shell and the other forecourts around town routinely.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it matters if anything has been run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Pull in somewhere safe, switch off, and keep the car off. Driving is what moves the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable much more frequently than drivers assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle turned off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct issue and it doesn't replace what petrol has weakened. The pump still has to put up with it, as that tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a main dealer.

Still with the vehicle?

That engine stays off.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere sensible, switch it off then leave it off. This is recoverable from a lot more often than drivers expect, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
