Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in South Tehidy? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, throughout South Tehidy and the remainder of Cornwall. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. While the motor has not been started and the petrol is still sitting in that tank, a tank drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much got in. Our technicians can explain what the next part is. Ring us — that goes before anything else.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will typically not run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it moves off — all right for a few miles. Drivers have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't fire it up. And if started, never trust it: that fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the ignition is left off also — turn it on and you often prime the system, and that is petrol exiting that tank for precisely those parts.
  • Never water down it. Diesel added on top gets rid of nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • We would much rather get to a tricky spot than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is easier to sort than a vehicle that has not moved. On the verge on Mount Whistle Road, that means hazards on then leave it.
  • A van turning up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode that starts TR14 0, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Get both ready before you dial.
  • What went in, roughly how much, and also if the motor has fired — the three details decide your whole call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

How many miles you travelled is what our engineers ask about, not how long your vehicle has been standing — and this is why. Diesel performs two tasks on its way through the engine: it combusts, and before burning it greases the high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first only. So a hurried refuel on the way in, the penny dropping around eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Passat left at Camborne since quarter past eight tells us those couple of miles were travelled with your pump running on a liquid stripped of a great deal of its protection. Phone us and leave it just where it is.

Twenty to nine. Outside Rosemellin Community Primary School. Late already, and the till receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Switch your hazards on, leave your motor alone, and call us. You might think three miles is nothing, in the BMW 3 Series or anything else — except that fuel is metered on demand, and a run taken in a hurry demands a great deal of that.

What we'll ask about is if that drive there was brief and chilly, because that is where petrol is least likely to burn properly — and anything that doesn't burn can slip past the piston rings and into the engine oil. Right up to the moment somebody takes it home, a diesel Peugeot 308 sitting in the car park outside Tuckingmill Hotel carrying a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job. Nothing degrades while it sits, so park the car there overnight then phone us in the morning.

Why so firm about leaving your keys alone? Because the pump is ahead of the fuel injectors, and a worn one sends whatever it sheds onward with your fuel. Ring us. Leave the Vauxhall Astra near Tuckingmill Valley.

Hire car or company car? Ring them before you ring us — some contracts want the hire firm to sign off the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it after that. Then call us about the Ford Kuga by Red River Stream Works, and do not worry that you cannot say how full that tank was. Nearly nobody can, in a vehicle they collected two days ago, and we work it out on site. The reason our engineers ask is that petrol in a diesel does its harm as a ratio: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger mixture than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger the mixture, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in South Tehidy

Can petrol be drained from a diesel on a forecourt?

A fair portion of this job gets done at the pump, since that's where it mostly kicks off. We operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the station's agreement, so if you're still at Tesco that is normally where the drain gets done.

At the forecourt, the mistake is halted with your engine never fired, and no place else manages it. The few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for your key settle how much requires flushing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and your filter require rinsing as well as that tank. It is not a disaster, and our engineers can still sort it out where your car sits.

Away from the petrol pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the staff help you move it. Well worth doing. Cranking it to roll four vehicle lengths isn't.

Areas our team serve near South Tehidy

Tolvaddon Downs, Roscroggan, Tolvaddon, Roskear Croft, Park Bottom — all of them on our trips that carry us across to South Tehidy as well, a coastal village.

We do come. The places above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of locations in Cornwall, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Contact us to enquire rather than assuming, above all when you're on the boundary or anywhere your phone gets wrong.

Use the map for the patch shown here. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of it is ground our engineers work on, and none of that needs the vehicle to travel to us.

Stranded by the roadside in South Tehidy

Some drivers find no safe place to pull in whatsoever. Set off, then realised? Landed on the verge of Tehidy Gardens, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazards going? That's a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Remain beside the car while it's wise to wait inside, and clear of the vehicle if it is not. Never start up the motor to limp the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the blend further into the system. However inconvenient the location, it is no trouble for us to come to it, and that's much better for the vehicle than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has travelled

over 50 miles from South Tehidy, the local M5 is what matters here. A drop in power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, instead of a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. Presume the worst of it on a long drive. Anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Say so when you phone. What our engineers bring changes.

A little about South Tehidy

South Tehidy is a small village in Cornwall, situated near the coast and approximately 10.9 miles from Truro. South Tehidy sits at an elevation of 81 metres, overlooking the surrounding countryside and nearby Tolvaddon Downs. South Tehidy has a population of around 538 people, predominantly living in detached housing.

When we reach you in South Tehidy: what happens

  • Three things get checked before any price — the fuel that got in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Out comes the contaminated fuel.
  • Our engineers rinse the lines and clear your filter, and so what's left in the fuel system is not what started the trouble.
  • The system gets bled, on fresh diesel.
  • It is run with new diesel in it, and we confirm that it is running properly.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away. There's no need to go to a garage at any point, since the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's spotted soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around South Tehidy?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the engine stays off — whereas the fault beneath it is a separate one altogether. Thinned diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and build-up in its place.

AdBlue removal around South Tehidy has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is often the more significant of the two. Our engineers cover both.

South Tehidy costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Frankly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. This job differs. Here is what moves it:

  • Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the key one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's sensible for our van.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range. Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

South Tehidy motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a South Tehidy petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this gets done. Often, provided the site consents: Morrisons, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that location is something our technicians answer there and then.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts if anything has been run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Pull in somewhere safe, turn off, and keep the car off. Driving moves the trouble along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you isn't restarting it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and flushing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct problem and it does not replace what petrol has weakened. Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. We drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a main dealer.

Is the vehicle still with you?

Keep it switched off.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere safe, switch it off and leave it off. A parked, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more commonly than drivers expect.
