Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Southgate

Don't fire up the engine. While the petrol is still sitting in the tank and the engine has not yet turned over, a drain is nearly always all it takes — and that gets decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they sit, throughout Southgate and the rest of Norfolk, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Contact us before everything else begins, and you will know what comes from there.

What to do next about petrol in a diesel

  • Never crank it. Fired up all the same? Then do not believe it. Diesel in a petrol motor usually won't run, and so the person stops and the harm halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away happily, for several miles. People get that reversed. It is not fine — the fuel system is grinding every mile you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors greased. Petrol only does the one. That is why your ignition remains off as well — switch it on and you often prime the system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for just those components.
  • Never tip diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies, and topping up takes out nothing — it simply hands you a fuller tank of the same blend. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A motor that has not shifted is the quickest one to handle, so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Stopped on the verge on The Old Coal Yard? Hazards on, then leave the car there. An odd spot works for us better than a started motor.
  • Before you ring, get your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning PE31 7 — that is what decides whether the van arrives or circles.
  • What went in, about how many litres, plus whether the motor has started — these three details determine the full visit. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Removing petrol from your diesel on the forecourt

Forecourts are where the work usually kicks off, and where a big part of it ends. If you're still at the forecourt at Lavender Hill Service Station, that is generally where the drain happens — we work on garage forecourts routinely, with the site's consent.

At a garage, it gets spotted with the engine never fired, and no place else does that. The few seconds between reading the receipt and going for your key settle how much requires flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as the tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where the car stands.

Staff will usually pitch in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get past. Take the offer. Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Southgate

Diesel Volkswagen Passat. A couple of litres of unleaded. Run a couple of miles. Shut off now, outside Co op Supermarket. That is the call our engineers hope for, as the point beneath it is about volume through the pump not hours on the clock.

None of it is your engine failing. That is the bit worth hearing, and it is why the ordinary Frogpits Wood call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Ford Focus drives out there without a murmur, comes back with the power gone, the idle rough and maybe a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer behaving like diesel. Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the tightly fitted parts it runs through; petrol dilutes it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing the fuel to hold pressure and not only to burn. So pressure that should build then stay built escapes past tolerances, delivery turns up poorer and later and less even than designed, and all of that stops once your fuel is corrected.

About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Mercedes C-Class parked close to Saint Mary's Church Hall scarcely two streets on. Call us, and leave the car off. A short hop does really help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the filter and your pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence cleaning the fuel lines rather than only draining the tank.

A vehicle you picked up two days ago gets driven further before anyone spots anything, which is the hire and courtesy fault in one sentence — and how far it went is what determines the quantity of petrol arriving at your injectors. Nothing careless about the mistake itself: a newer diesel filler neck takes the smaller petrol nozzle with practically no resistance, and so strange places see most of these. Ring us from wherever you are, near Snettisham Village Sign or not, and we'll get to the Dacia Duster.

By this point your tank is not where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, that blend is in your filter, your lines, your pump and the rail — and it does not come back out with that tank contents. A diesel Audi A3 that made it by Snettisham needs the circuit flushed, not drained.

Will our technicians reach your corner of Southgate?

Snettisham, Norton Hill, Ingoldisthorpe, Shepherds Port, Dersingham — each of those on our trips that bring us out to Southgate too, a residential suburb.

If yours is not on the list it does not mean we never come — there are separate pages for the majority of places in Norfolk, and the ones named above are simply the closest neighbours. Call us to ask rather than guessing, especially when you're on a boundary or somewhere the satnav gets wrong.

Check this map for the ground included on this page. Our technicians work roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of it, and your car never needs to come to us.

Southgate: stuck where you stopped

Not everyone has a sensible place to pull in. If you realised after setting off and ended up by the verge of Station Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that's a common call for us and not an unusual one.

Remain with your car if it is safe to be in it, yet out of it if it isn't. Do not fire it up to reach a better place. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that mix deeper into the fuel system. A van driving to a difficult spot is no problem for us, and it is far better for your car than driving on.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

Your A1(M) is the one that counts here, and it runs under 50 miles from Southgate. It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's some smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a clean stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The first sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. It alters what our engineers bring, so tell us when you call: on a longer run — anything near the under 50 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

Southgate itself

Southgate is a small suburban area in Norfolk, situated near the coast and approximately 98 miles from London. Southgate has a population of around 2182 people and is characterized by predominantly detached housing. Southgate is close to nearby places such as Snettisham, Norton Hill, and Ingoldisthorpe, and is about 34 miles from the city of Ely. Southgate sits at a low elevation of around 11 metres above sea level.

What happens when we get to you in Southgate

  • The replies alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what got in, how much of that, and whether the engine has run.
  • That tank is cleared of everything.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • The motor is turned on and tested to be sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

From that point, you are ready to set off. There is no need for a garage at any point, since the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is caught soon, long-term damage is very rare.

A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Southgate

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your engine stays off — while the problem under it's a different one altogether. Petrol thins the diesel and strips the protection your fuel system relies on. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Southgate page. Both are ours to deal with.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Southgate?

Our engineers cannot put one price on this page frankly, since this job is not one job. What moves it:

  • This is the big one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much your tank takes.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and if a technician can safely get to and work on it.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear and not as a range. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and isn't pressing, works too.

Petrol in diesel queries from Southgate motorists

I'm on a forecourt in Southgate. Can you drain it here?

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this happens. Routinely, provided the site consents: Tesco Fuel, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that location is something we answer on the spot.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run. What decides how much work is needed is whether that mix has been pulled through the fuel system — since although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Driving is what shifts the problem from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it's recoverable far more frequently than drivers assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't an alteration and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the car turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has diluted is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate issue. So no. Your pump still has to live with it, because your tank still has petrol in it after that.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever the car is, we drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

You, and the car, still together?

The engine stays off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car afterwards. A still, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more regularly than drivers fear.
