Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Southport?
Don't fire up the engine. If the fuel is still inside the tank and your engine has not been started, a drain is almost always all it requires — and that gets settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they sit, throughout Southport and the remainder of Merseyside, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Contact us and then our engineers shall tell you what comes after that before you do any more.
Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Never crank it — and do not trust it if it runs. This is the thing drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor given diesel typically just can't run, so the driver stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol generally starts, ticks over and pulls away just fine for several miles. It is not okay. It's wearing out your fuel system whenever you drive.
- Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it greases — that injection pump, the injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition alone also: flicking it on is usually sufficient to prime that system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into just those components.
- Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage as that advice implies — so do not add diesel on top to thin it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Sit tight if it's safe to. Hazards on, engine off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Eastbank Street, anywhere — a tricky location for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to deal with than a motor that never moved.
- A van arriving rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode beginning PR8 1, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Get both prepared before you dial.
- What got in, approximately how much, and also if your car has run — the three facts shape the whole job. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.
Can petrol be drained from a diesel at a forecourt?
Plenty of the work starts at the pump, meaning a big portion of it is completed on site. Still at Morrisons? Then that is generally where it takes place. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the site.
The forecourt is the single spot it gets stopped before the engine has fired. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That's not a calamity, and we can still put it right where it stands. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for your key.
Out from the pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you push it. Very much worth it. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a restart.
We will get to you, drain the tank, clean the fuel lines then put clean diesel in so you can drive away. So if petrol went into your diesel Skoda Octavia in Southport and you're stranded outside Baltic Supermarket with a boot loaded with shopping, call us — and do not start it again to exit that space. A mile or so at light throttle uses little diesel, which is why those tend to be the simple ones.
Three replies determine most of the work: what was put in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since. We ask for them as soon as we get to your car in the car park outside Maloney's Bar. Next the polluted mix comes out of that tank, the lines are flushed, and where your Audi A4 has a replaceable filter, it comes off. When fresh diesel is in and your system bled, we start the car and check it runs smoothly before you pull away.
Don't drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst the vehicle sits, because a diesel Mercedes C-Class left outside Model Railway Village is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.
Seldom the issue, the place. On-street is the usual place our technicians work, and a cramped parking spot is far preferable to a vehicle that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you phone from close to The Atkinson, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can park next to without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then your Ford Kuga gets emptied, the fuel filter changed where a workable one exists, the fuel lines cleaned and clean fuel put through the entire system — since by now the worst of it is in your lines, not your tank.
Turn off where you have stopped, and do not start it to find somewhere better — close to Beales or anywhere at all. Rattling, a ragged idle, white smoke and a limp throttle are a misfilled diesel Peugeot 208 telling you what is wrong.
Southport and the villages next to it
Being a coastal town, Southport gets a routine call, whilst the villages nearby go along on that same run: Birkdale and Blowick, High Park and Hillside, Churchtown.
Not on this list? That says nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and most locations in Merseyside have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Ring us to ask instead of presuming, above all when you're on the border or anywhere your satnav gets wrong.
The map shows the patch this page includes. Your vehicle never needs to travel to us. Our technicians work over all of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Kerbside call-outs across Southport
Not everybody gets the opportunity to stop anywhere sensible. If you noticed after setting off and ended up by the verge of Waverley Street, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that is a normal call for us rather than a rare one.
Clear of the car if it's not wise to wait there, beside it if it is. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the trouble: fire it up to reach somewhere handier and the mixture goes further into the system with every mile driven. Pressing on causes the car far more harm than our van heading out to an awkward location, and that is no trouble for us.
Petrol in a diesel, but your car has travelled
under 15 miles from Southport, the local M58 is what counts now. It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's smoke, an uneven idle and power draining away — not a clean stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.
The next sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. It affects what our engineers bring, and so say so when you call: on a longer drive — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors.
Where's Southport?
Southport is a coastal town in Merseyside, situated on the northwest coast of England, with a low elevation of around 10 metres above sea level. Southport lies approximately 191 miles northwest of London and 14.9 miles west of Preston, with nearby places including Birkdale, Blowick, and High Park. Southport has a population of around 24,307 people and is characterised by a high proportion of flat housing. Southport is a popular residential area with a range of local amenities.
Once we arrive with you around Southport: what we do
- Three things get established before any quote — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
- We drain the tank of the contaminated mixture.
- Fuel lines are purged through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.
- Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
- It is run with fresh diesel in it, and we confirm that it's running smoothly.
That has it ready to set off. All of it is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.
AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Southport?
The issue is not the same, though the opening rule is — don't start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the protection the fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.
Both are ours. There is a separate Southport page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.
Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Southport
What shifts the price is set out below, as this job isn't one job and our technicians can't frankly put a single number on this page.
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much your tank can hold.
- Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
- Where your vehicle is, and whether a technician can safely reach and work on it.
Tell us your car, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a straight answer rather than a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.
Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel around Southport
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Southport?
Much of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we are regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there is possible.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether the engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is if that mix has been pulled through your fuel system.
I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?
Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving moves the problem along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely useful thing left to you is not restarting the car.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
It isn't an alteration, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. It belongs to a different fault from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces. Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
No. We drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.
You, and the vehicle, still together?
Leave the car turned off.
Turn it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best place available — and drivers fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
Throughout Merseyside and in Southport: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
