Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Southwater?
Don't turn on your engine. While the petrol is still in your tank and the engine has not turned over, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires — and that's settled in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, throughout Southwater and the remainder of West Sussex, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. Our team can tell you what the next part will be. Ring us — this comes ahead of all else.
What to try first about petrol in a diesel
- Do not crank it. Started anyway? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol motor typically can't run, and so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It drives off normally, for a few miles. Drivers get that muddled. It is not fine — the fuel system is grinding every mile you do.
- Diesel ignites, and before it ignites it protects — that injection pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition be also: switching it on is commonly sufficient to prime the system, and priming moves petrol from that tank into precisely those parts.
- Never dilute it. Diesel added on top removes nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.
- We would rather drive to a tricky place than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is easier to sort than a motor that has never shifted. On the verge on Worthing Road, that means hazards on then leave it.
- Before you call, have your location. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode that starts RH13 9 — that is what determines whether the technician arrives or circles.
- Phone 0333 366 0103. Say what was put in, roughly how much, and also whether the engine has started. Those three replies settle the full visit.
Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel
A good share of the job ends up done at a pump, as that is where it mostly starts. The drain generally gets done on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Texaco? Given the site's permission, that's somewhere we work, and regularly.
Nowhere else except the forecourt can the mistake be spotted with the motor still untouched. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still put it right where it stands. It does mean the fuel lines and the filter need rinsing as well as the tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the key.
Attendants will normally help out pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get past. Take the offer. Moving it four bays doesn't warrant starting the motor.
Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel Skoda Octavia, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, turned off outside The Co-operative Southwater now. Time passed isn't the thing our technicians need. Fuel sucked by the pump is.
Twenty to nine at the gates of Southwater Infant Academy, running late, and the till receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Hazards on, motor off, phone. Three miles in your Peugeot 308 sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump meters fuel on demand — while a rushed morning dash demands plenty.
A diesel Dacia Duster parked in the car park outside The Lintot carrying a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job, right up until someone takes it home. Park the car there overnight then ring us in the morning. Nothing worsens whilst it stands. What our technicians will ask is whether the trip there was short and chilly, as that is where petrol is least likely to burn correctly — and what won't burn can get past the piston rings then into the engine oil.
Pull in somewhere safe, switch off and phone us. Happy on the way out to Public Playing Field, sluggish on the way back? Then look at the tank. Petrol dilutes diesel; thinner fuel leaks past the tightly fitted parts that build injection pressure; and the farther the diesel Mercedes E-Class drove, the less of that pressure it held.
Leave the Audi A3 by Southwater War Memorial and call us. We're blunt about not driving on because a worn pump gives off, and what it loses passes onward with the fuel to the fuel injectors beyond it.
Can our technicians serve your side of Southwater?
These same rounds bring us to Southwater Street, Two Mile Ash, Copsale, Barns Green and Marylands Park as well as Southwater, which is a rural village.
Our technicians do come. The names above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for most towns across West Sussex, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. On the boundary, or anywhere a satnav misreads? Contact us and check instead of presuming.
The map shows the patch the page covers. We work at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of it, and your car doesn't need to come to us.
Stranded on the roadside in Southwater
Not everybody gets a suitable place to pull in. A normal call for us rather than an unusual one: realised after setting off, finished up on the verge beside Church Lane or at a lay-by with your hazards on.
Safe there? Sit by it. Not fine? Climb out and away from it. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the problem: restart it to get to somewhere handier and the mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven. However difficult the place, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that's much better for the vehicle than driving on.
Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles
This is where the local M23 comes in, under 10 miles away from Southwater. A misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are normally lost power, an uneven idle and smoke rather than a clean stop.
The first safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. On a longer run — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you ring. It alters what we bring.
All about Southwater
Southwater is a village in West Sussex, situated inland at an elevation of 46 metres, approximately 16.6 miles north of Brighton and Hove. Southwater has a mix of housing types, with terraced houses being predominant, and is close to nearby places such as Southwater Street and Copsale. Southwater is also within commuting distance of London, being around 34.8 miles from the capital.
Our visit in Southwater, step by step
- Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that got in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
- The tank is emptied of everything.
- Fuel lines are flushed through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.
- Bleeding your system follows, once new diesel is in.
- Our engineers start the engine and make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.
From that point, you are ready to pull away. There is no need for a garage at any point, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it's spotted soon, long-term damage is very rare.
AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Southwater?
If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first step is the same — don't start the car — yet this problem is not. Petrol dilutes your diesel and takes away the protection the system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and build-up in its place.
Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Southwater page. Both are ours to deal with.
Southwater prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
Our technicians can't put one figure on this page truthfully, since the job isn't one job. What changes it:
- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that proportion.
- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.
- Where the vehicle is, and if a van can safely get to and work on it.
Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and whether the engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, works too.
Petrol in diesel: common questions around Southwater
Fuel drains on a Southwater petrol station forecourt
Yes — forecourts are where a fair portion of this happens. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the station's agreement we attend Shell and the other forecourts locally regularly.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Ratio settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. What settles how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through the system — since even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car
Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of that tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable a lot more commonly than motorists assume.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
A drain then flush carried out properly is not an alteration and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave it switched off.
Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?
Two-stroke oil solves a distinct problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. The tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to live with it.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?
There is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, as our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is.
Waiting next to it?
Shut off is how the car stays.
Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, turn off, and let the car stay that way. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this far more than they need to.
