Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Sowood Green

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, throughout Sowood Green and the remainder of West Yorkshire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. While the engine has not turned over and the fuel is still sitting in that tank, a drain is nearly always all it takes, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much got in. Our technicians can show you what the next stage will be. Phone — this comes before everything else.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • While you drive, your pump and the injectors suffer. That is why you do not crank it, and why you do not depend on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel specifically — the part most people get wrong — is that it drives off fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally will not run at all, which stops the person and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Switching the ignition on usually primes your system, and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it burns. Petrol handles the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition alone.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes — so do not put diesel on top to dilute it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay put if it's wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Moor Hey Lane, anywhere — an odd spot for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to handle than a car that never shifted.
  • Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode starting HX4 9, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of turning up.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Say what got in, roughly how much, plus whether the engine has started. Those three facts determine the full visit.

The journey in is what drew weakened diesel through your pump. Standing still has pulled nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Passat, left at Slaithwaite all day, waits dormant in that tank while it waits. Phone us first — before the keys come out.

The call we like goes like this: diesel BMW 3 Series, a couple of litres of unleaded, done a couple of miles, now shut off outside Sainsbury's. What we are really asking is how much fuel your pump has pulled — not how long ago it was.

It will start. It will move off perfectly well. That is the trouble, because a diesel on a diluted tank behaves normally whilst wearing the components its fuel should be lubricating. So no, never chance the trip home from Dog & Partridge — leave the Ford Focus and ring us.

About as well as this goes, once the motor has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Mercedes E-Class left near Sowood Community Centre scarcely two streets on. Ring us, and leave the vehicle off. A short hop does really help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the filter and your pump have had thinned fuel through them — hence flushing the fuel lines rather than only draining the tank.

The narrower petrol nozzle fits a modern diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical rather than careless. Unfamiliar spots see most of it for that reason. So: fuelled up near Stainland Library without thinking, in a diesel Vauxhall Astra you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anybody realises, and distance decides how much petrol ends up at the fuel injectors.

Draining petrol from a diesel at the forecourt

Most of this job begins at a pump, meaning a fair chunk of that is finished on site. The drain typically gets done right there. Still on the forecourt at Scientific Lubricants? Given the owner's consent, that's a place we work, and often.

Before your engine has fired — a forecourt is the one location the mistake is halted. Fuel drawn out of your tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when the motor is switched on and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers your filter and the lines together with your tank. That is still not a calamity, and our technicians put it right where the car sits. What determines it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

The attendants will usually offer to move it clear of the petrol pump so the next driver can get past. That is worth doing. Shifting the car four spaces doesn't warrant firing the engine.

Sowood Green plus the areas near it

As a small village, Sowood Green has a routine visit, whilst the places close by come along on that same trip: Sowood and Greenfield, Stainland and Penny Hill, Outlane Moor.

If yours isn't on the list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are pages for the majority of places across West Yorkshire, and the ones named above are merely the nearest neighbours. Close to the border, or anywhere the satnav gets wrong? Ring us and enquire instead of assuming.

This map marks the area this page includes. Every bit of it is territory our engineers cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't bring the car anywhere.

Stuck on the roadside in Sowood Green

The chance to pull over somewhere sensible does not fall to everyone. Set off, then twigged? Finished up on the verge of Forest Hill Road, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights going? That is a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Wait beside your car while it's safe to wait there, but out of it when it's not. Never restart it to reach a nicer location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mixture deeper into the system. However tricky the place, it's no problem for us to come to it, and that is a lot better for the car than carrying on.

Driven it already? Pull over, and read below

This is where the local M62 comes in — under a mile from Sowood Green. A drop in power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a clean stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the next exit that is safe, pull up there, and never restart the vehicle to move it. It affects what we bring, so tell us when you call: on a longer run — anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

What our engineers do when our engineers reach you around Sowood Green

  • Three things get checked before any price — your fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • The polluted fuel comes out of your tank.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.
  • We pour new diesel in and prime your system.
  • It is run with clean diesel in it, and our technicians confirm that it is running correctly.

From there, you're ready to set off. Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been spotted quickly, and as all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to go to a garage.

Sowood Green AdBlue removal is a different problem

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first step is unchanged — do not crank it — yet this problem isn't. Petrol thins the diesel and takes away the lubrication the system depends on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There is a separate Sowood Green page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Sowood Green

We can't put one figure on this page frankly, since this job isn't one job. What shifts it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much the tank takes.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there sensibly?

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.

Sowood Green motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Sowood Green petrol station forecourt

Much of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you if we can work there. With the owner's permission our engineers work at JET and the other forecourts locally routinely.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether the engine has run matters a lot more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres. Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been pulled right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, then leave the car off. Driving is what shifts the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable a lot more commonly than motorists fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave it switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has weakened is not put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a distinct fault. So no. That tank still has petrol in it later, and the pump still has to cope with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

You, and your car, still together?

The engine stays off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting it later. A parked, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than people fear.
