Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Spittal?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Spittal and the rest of Stirling. The first thing to do is not to start the motor. While the motor has not yet been started and the fuel is still inside your tank, a drain is nearly always all it requires, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much went in. Our technicians shall explain what the following part is. Phone — that comes ahead of all else.

What to try now about petrol in a diesel

  • Never fire it up — and don't trust it when it does start. This is the bit most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor given diesel typically just won't run, and so the person stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel given petrol usually starts, idles and drives away quite happily for a few miles. It's not fine. It's eating into the fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it greases — the high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition off too: turning it on is usually all it takes to prime your system, and priming draws petrol from that tank into exactly those parts.
  • Don't pour diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system won't accept petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes, and topping up clears nothing — it only hands you a bigger tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • Stay put if it's sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Endrick Road, anywhere — a tricky spot for us trumps a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to sort out than a motor that never shifted.
  • Before you ring, have your location. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts G63 9 — that is what decides whether the van shows up or circles.
  • Three replies shape the full job: the liquid you tipped in, the approximate measure of it, plus if it has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Can petrol be pumped from a diesel on the forecourt?

Pumps are where this job usually starts, and where a big share of it finishes. If you are still at the forecourt at the nearest petrol station, that is usually where this drain gets done — our technicians work on station forecourts regularly, with the owner's consent.

Nowhere else other than a garage can the mistake be stopped with the engine still untouched. The few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for your key determine how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the filter require cleaning as well as that tank. It is not a calamity, and our engineers can still deal with it where your car stands.

Attendants will normally pitch in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next customer get by. Take the help. Starting the car just for four vehicle lengths? Don't.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Spittal

Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel Skoda Octavia, a few litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off outside Co-op Food now. Time elapsed is not the thing our technicians need. Fuel sucked by your pump is.

Twenty to nine by the local primary school, already late, and the till receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, ignition off, call us. Three miles in your BMW 3 Series sounds like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel on demand — while a frantic morning run asks for plenty.

Pull in somewhere safe, turn off then call us. Normal on the way out to Queen Elizabeth Field, flat on the way back? Then look at that tank. Petrol thins diesel; weaker fuel slips past the precision components that build injection pressure; and the further the diesel Ford Focus drove, the less of that pressure it held.

Hardly ever the problem, the spot. On-street is the commonest place our engineers work, and a tight parking spot is far preferable to a vehicle that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you phone from near Killearn Kirk, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a van can pull up alongside without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then your Mercedes E-Class gets cleared, the fuel filter changed where a usable one exists, your lines purged and fresh fuel put through the full circuit — because by now the worst of it is in the fuel lines, not your tank.

Hire car or company car? Call them before you ring us — some contracts want the hire firm to sign off the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it later on. Then call us about the Peugeot 208 near George Buchanan Monument, and do not worry that you can't say how full that tank was. Almost no one can, in a vehicle they picked up two days ago, and we work it out on site. The reason our technicians ask is that petrol in a diesel does its harm as a proportion: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger mix than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that blend, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

Service near Spittal

Those same runs take us to Killearn, Branziert, Gartness, Boquhan and Dumgoyne as well as Spittal, which is a residential suburb.

There are pages for most places in Stirling, and the ones listed above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from the list says nothing whatsoever about whether our technicians come. Ring us to enquire rather than presuming, especially where you're on a boundary or anywhere your phone can't find.

That map is the ground the page spans. All of that is territory our technicians serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't bring your car anywhere.

Roadside stops in Spittal

The chance to pull over anywhere sensible doesn't come to everybody. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up by the verge beside Drumore Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights flashing, that is a routine call for us rather than a rare one.

Whether you wait by your car or keep away from it rests on if sitting nearby is wise. Never fire up your engine to nurse the vehicle somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that blend further into the system. We will send the van to an inconvenient location without any fuss, and for the vehicle that is a lot better than driving on.

Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

under 10 miles from Spittal, the local Toll Plaza Interchange is what matters here. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone. It alters what our technicians bring, so mention it when you call: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors.

Where is Spittal?

Spittal is a suburban area in Stirling, situated inland at an elevation of 84 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Spittal lies approximately 13.7 miles northwest of Glasgow and is surrounded by nearby places such as Killearn, Branziert, and Gartness. Spittal has a population of around 1388 residents and is part of the wider commuter belt around Glasgow. Spittal is also relatively distant from London, being around 358.2 miles away.

When our engineers arrive with you in Spittal: what happens

  • Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • The polluted mixture is pulled out of that tank.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever is left afterwards isn't the thing that created the trouble.
  • Our technicians put new diesel in and prime the fuel system.
  • It is fired up with new diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it is running properly.

After that it's ready to drive away. Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been spotted soon, and since everything is done where the car is, it never has to go to a garage.

A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Spittal

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first instruction is unchanged — never crank it — yet the issue is not. The lubrication a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which thins the diesel. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and build-up.

AdBlue removal around Spittal has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's frequently the more serious of the two. Our engineers deal with both.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs around Spittal

What changes the figure is set out below, as the job is not one job and our engineers cannot frankly put a single number on this page.

  • Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the main one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much that tank holds.
  • The kind of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether our van can safely get to the vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your car is.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a firm answer instead of a range. Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Petrol in diesel: frequent questions in Spittal

Fuel drains on a Spittal petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a large share of this work takes place. Our engineers visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the site's permission — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the engine has run counts far more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Driving takes the trouble along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a distinct issue from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind restores. The pump still has to cope with it, since your tank still has petrol in it later.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There's no need to take it to a dealership, since our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

Standing next to it?

Turned off is how it stays.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, and let the vehicle remain that way. This is recoverable from much more regularly than motorists assume, and a still, cold motor is the best position to be in.
