Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Spring Park? Don't Start It

With your tank still holding the petrol and the motor not yet run, nearly every job requires only a drain, so leave the engine off. That result is determined in the minutes straight after the fill-up, and not by the amount that got in. All over Spring Park and the remainder of Northamptonshire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and flushes it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Our engineers will explain what your next part will be. Contact us — this comes ahead of everything else.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • While you drive, your pump and the injectors suffer. That is why you do not start it, and why you never trust it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel especially — the point drivers get wrong — is that it pulls away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine generally won't run at all, which stops the person and stops the harm with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Flicking the car's ignition on often primes your system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition off.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies — so never pour diesel on top to thin it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A car that hasn't moved is the easiest one to deal with, so remain where you are if you sensibly can. Stopped on the verge on Kingsmead? Hazards on, then leave it there. A difficult location works for us better than a started motor.
  • A van turning up instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode beginning NN2 8, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Have both prepared before you phone.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three questions — what was put in, about how many litres, plus whether the motor has been run. The answers settle all that comes after.

Draining petrol from your diesel on the forecourt

The work begins at a forecourt, generally. Often enough the job ends there too. We work on station forecourts routinely, with the station's permission, and so if you're still at BP that's typically where this drain gets done.

At a forecourt, it is spotted with your engine never run, and nowhere else does it. Fuel pulled out of the tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is switched on and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the fuel filter and the lines along with that tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and we sort it out where the vehicle stands. What decides it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

Wheel it out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they normally will. The next customer gets past the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth the risk.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Spring Park

The call we like goes like this: diesel Peugeot 308, a couple of litres of unleaded, driven a couple of miles, now turned off outside Heron Foods. What we are actually asking is how much fuel your pump has drawn — not how long ago it was.

What we'll ask about is if that run there was brief and chilly, as that is where petrol is least likely to burn properly — and what doesn't burn can slip past the rings and into the sump. Right up to the moment somebody drives it home, a diesel Dacia Duster parked in the parking area at The Windmill holding a tank of petrol in it is a straightforward job. Nothing deteriorates while it waits, so leave the vehicle overnight then phone us next morning.

Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the tightly fitted components it runs through, and petrol thins it. That is the full mechanism, and it explains the normal Leyland Drive Open Space call: a diesel Audi A3 that drove out there without fuss and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, possibly smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs the fuel to hold pressure, not only to burn — so when the fuel dilutes, pressure that should build and stay built starts leaking past clearances instead, and the engine gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was engineered around. No part of that is your engine failing, which is the part worth hearing: it is the fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is sorted.

A throttle gone dead, white smoke, a ragged idle, rattling: that's a wrongly fuelled diesel Mercedes A-Class telling you what is wrong. Don't restart it to find a better location — switch off where you have stopped, by St Mark's Church Hall or anywhere else.

Put right and starting aren't the same thing, and the difference is your circuit: our engineers flush it, and take the filter off where there's a serviceable one. Compare that with the sure of themselves advice you'll get — drain the vehicle, refill with fresh diesel. Half true. Do exactly that to a diesel Citroen C4 Picasso by The Bee Hive and it'll start, which is exactly why the suggestion sounds sensible. Then your engine sucks the petrol left behind in the filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, as draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead.

Service around Spring Park

Spring Park is a residential suburb, so we head out to the town and to anywhere near it on the usual rounds: White Hills, Boughton Green, Sunnyside, Kingsthorpe and Boughton.

Not on this list? That tells you nothing. The places above are simply the nearest few, and the majority of places across Northamptonshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Contact us and check instead of guessing, particularly if you're on a boundary or somewhere your phone struggles with.

That map shows the area the page covers. Our technicians work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of that, and the car doesn't need to travel to us.

Spring Park: broken down where you stopped

Not everyone gets a safe place to pull in. Set off, then realised? Ended up by the verge of Drovers Walk, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards going? That is a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Stay beside the car if it is sensible to wait in it, but clear of the vehicle when it is not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mix further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer. However inconvenient the location, it is no bother for us to come to it, and that is much better for your car than carrying on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

under 5 miles from Spring Park, the M1 is what matters now. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle turns uneven, and there may be some smoke.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. On a longer trip — anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you phone. It changes what our engineers bring.

Spring Park itself

Spring Park is a suburban area located in Northamptonshire, England, situated near the River Nene at an elevation of around 95 metres. Spring Park sits within the East Midlands region, approximately 62 miles northwest of London, and is close to nearby places such as White Hills, Boughton Green, and Sunnyside. Spring Park is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock and its proximity to the city of Milton Keynes, which is about 17 miles to the southeast.

What our technicians do when we get to you around Spring Park

  • We establish what went in, how much, and if your motor has run. The responses alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.
  • The tank is emptied of it.
  • Fuel lines are cleaned through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.
  • Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
  • We fire it up and confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That has the car ready to set off. Long-term damage is very rare when it has been caught soon, and as all of it is done where your car is, it never needs to go to a garage.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Spring Park?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — the engine stays off — while this issue beneath it is a different one altogether. The protection a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which thins your diesel. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and deposits.

AdBlue removal in Spring Park has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is frequently the more serious of the two. Our engineers deal with both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Spring Park?

What changes the figure is laid out below, as this job is not one job and we cannot honestly put a single number on this page.

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that ratio.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.
  • Where the car is, and whether our van can safely reach and work on it.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range. If it's not urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: common queries in Spring Park

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Spring Park?

Plenty of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Texaco is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there's possible.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable a lot more frequently than motorists assume.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out properly, emptying and rinsing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Afterwards? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

The engine stays off.

If you have already driven it, stop somewhere safe, turn it off and keep it off. This is recoverable from far more frequently than motorists expect, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
