Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in St Francis Court

If you have not fired up the motor yet, do not. A drain and nothing else is nearly always what a motor requires while the petrol is still inside the tank and the engine has not yet been started, which is why it is the coming few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has stopped in St Francis Court or the remainder of Hampshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there. Call us and our technicians can explain what comes after that before you attempt anything else.

What to try now about petrol in a diesel

  • Give a petrol engine diesel and it will normally not run at all, so the person stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it moves off — all right for a couple of miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never fire it up. And having started, don't rely on it: the fuel system is grinding while you drive.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the car's ignition remains off too — switch it on and you often prime that system, and that's petrol leaving the tank for exactly those components.
  • Do not dilute it. Diesel tipped on top removes nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • A motor that hasn't moved is the simplest one to sort, and so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Phoenix Square? Hazards on, then leave it there. A tricky spot works for us better than a started diesel.
  • Keep your whereabouts prepared before you call. A postcode that starts PO2 9 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between our van turning up and a van circling.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Tell us what went in, about how many litres, and also if the motor has started. Those three facts decide the entire job.

Tonight, please, instead of Monday. Running it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has pushed real volume through the pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return leg would about double the figure to no purpose. The Renault Megane can stay outside Hilsea perfectly happily. Phone from the platform if easier; standing over us whilst our technicians work isn't necessary.

Diesel Volkswagen Passat. A few litres of unleaded. Run a couple of miles. Switched off now, outside Lidl. That's the phone call we hope for, since the point under it's about amount through the pump instead of hours on the clock.

A diesel pump supplies fuel on demand, and a rushed morning run demands plenty — so three miles in your Skoda Octavia feels like nothing and isn't. Twenty to nine outside King's Academy Northern Parade (Junior), running late, a receipt in your hand saying unleaded: hazards on, engine off, phone.

Standing still, it gets no worse. The pump isn't turning, and so whatever occurred on the way to Portsmouth Grammar School Playing Fields in that diesel Peugeot 3008 is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on your engine to find more of that.

Your pump sits upstream of your injectors, so whatever a worn one loses travels downstream with your fuel — which is why we're blunt about not driving on. Call us, then leave the diesel BMW 5 Series where it's near St Francis' Church.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in St Francis Court

On a forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel

Pumps are where the work mostly starts, and where a big chunk of it closes. We work on garage forecourts regularly, with the owner's consent, so if you are still at Shell that is generally where this drain takes place.

Nowhere else but a garage can the mistake be stopped with your motor still untouched. Our engineers can still deal with it where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and moved there, and that sucked fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, right from your tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to go past the tank to your lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the keys are what decide that.

Push the car out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they usually will. The next motorist gets through the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Rolling the car four lengths does not warrant firing it.

Places our team cover near St Francis Court

St Francis Court is a coastal area, and our vans get out to it and to the villages around it on the usual journeys: Vicarage Row, Hilsea, Highbury, Tipner and North End.

Not on this list? It tells you nothing. The places above are simply the closest few, and nearly all places around Hampshire have a page of their own somewhere on the site. Presuming is the mistake to resist, especially on a boundary or somewhere your phone goes wrong. Call us to ask.

This map marks the area this page spans. We work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and the vehicle doesn't need to move to us.

Stuck at the kerbside anywhere in St Francis Court?

Not everyone has a chance to stop somewhere sensible. If you realised after setting off and ended up by the verge beside Northwood Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that is a routine call for us and not a rare one.

Sit beside the vehicle if it's safe to be in it, and out of it when it is not. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the catch: start it up to reach somewhere better and that mix goes further into the system with every mile driven. We'll send the van to a difficult spot without any trouble, and for your car that's far better than pressing on.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

under a mile out of St Francis Court, the local M27 is what counts here. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power falls away, the idle turns rough, and there may be some smoke.

Come off at the next safe exit, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to move it. Long drive? Anything approaching the under 3 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the mixture. Say that on the call, since it alters what goes in our van.

Where's St Francis Court?

St Francis Court is a coastal locality in Hampshire, situated near the city of Portsmouth and close to other nearby places such as Vicarage Row, Hilsea, and Highbury. St Francis Court is characterized by its predominantly flat housing stock, with many residents living in flats. St Francis Court sits at a low elevation of around 2 metres above sea level, reflecting its coastal setting.

Our visit around St Francis Court, step by step

  • The responses change the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what got in, how much of that, and whether the motor has run.
  • That tank is drained of it.
  • Our engineers clean the fuel lines and clear the filter, and so what is remaining in the system is not what started the problem.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • Your engine is turned on and tested to confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

From that point, you are ready to set off. There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's spotted early, lasting damage is very rare.

A distinct job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around St Francis Court

The issue is not the same, though the opening rule is — don't fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that relies on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own St Francis Court page. Both are ours to handle.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs in St Francis Court

What changes the figure is set out below, as the job isn't one job and we can't honestly put a single figure on this page.

  • This is the key one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is sensible for our van.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and whether it has run. Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel questions from St Francis Court drivers

At a petrol station in St Francis Court, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there is possible.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether the engine has run matters a lot more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres. What decides how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through your fuel system — since although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of the tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable far more regularly than drivers assume.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, clearing and cleaning is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a separate fault from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores. Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and your pump still has to cope with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Still with the car?

Never turn it on again.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, switch off, then let the vehicle stay that way. This is recoverable from far more regularly than motorists assume, and a stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in.
