Petrol in Diesel

0333 366 0103

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in St Georges Hill?

Don't start the engine. If the petrol is still inside your tank and your engine has not yet run, a drain is almost always all it needs — and that's settled in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they stand, all over St Georges Hill and the remainder of Surrey, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. Just one ring to us is plenty: our team will show you what happens after this. Try it first.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • Never crank it. Turned on all the same? Then don't believe it. Diesel in a petrol motor normally cannot run, and so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off normally, for a few miles. Drivers get that muddled. It's not okay — your fuel system is wearing every mile you cover.
  • Diesel burns, and before it combusts it lubricates — the injection pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off too: turning it on is frequently all it takes to prime your system, and priming draws petrol from that tank into exactly those components.
  • Don't dilute it. Diesel added on top removes nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that has never shifted is the easiest one to sort, and our team would much rather drive to a tricky location than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on South Road, turn the hazards on then keep the vehicle there.
  • Check where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning KT13 0, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than turning up.
  • What got in, roughly how much, and whether the car has fired — those three facts settle the full call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

The run in is what drew weakened diesel through the pump. Standing still has drawn nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Golf, left at Weybridge all day, sits idle in that tank while it waits. Phone us first — before the keys turn.

Our technicians will come to you, drain the tank, flush your fuel lines and put fresh diesel in so you can drive home. So if petrol went into the diesel Renault Clio in St Georges Hill and you're stuck outside Lidl with a boot loaded with shopping, ring us — and do not crank it a second time to get out of the space. A mile or so at gentle throttle uses hardly any fuel, so those tend to be the simple cases.

Nothing warns you, as from the driver's seat there's nothing to be warned about. Your diesel BMW 3 Series will have seemed entirely usual on the way back from Manby Lodge Infant School, and they all do — which is the snag with petrol in a diesel instead of the reverse. Diesel in a petrol motor generally refuses to run, stopping the motorist and stopping the wear with them. Petrol in a diesel starts, idles, moves off as though nothing had happened, and all the while your pump does its work without the protection its fuel is supposed to supply. Tell us about how far, and how hard. The harder counts more.

Simple job, this one — till somebody drives it home. A diesel Audi A4 left at Hand and Spear Hotel with petrol in the tank loses nothing by sitting there overnight, and so park the vehicle and phone once it's light. Expect a query about the run there, though. Brief and cold is exactly where petrol fails to burn, and what will not burn can get past the piston rings then into the sump.

Seldom the trouble, the place. On-street is the most common place we work, and a tight parking spot is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you ring from near Campbell gate, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can park beside without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then your Mercedes C-Class gets cleared, the filter changed where a workable one exists, the fuel lines cleaned and clean fuel put through the full circuit — since by now the worst of it is in your lines, not the tank.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in St Georges Hill

On a forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel

Much of this job starts at a forecourt, so a large chunk of it is finished on site. Still at Shell? Then that is typically where it happens. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the owner.

Nowhere other than a garage can the mistake be spotted with the motor still untouched. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That's not a disaster, and our technicians can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for your key.

The staff will usually help you push it clear of the pump so the next driver can get by. That is worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a start.

St Georges Hill and the towns beside it

St Georges Hill is a small village, so our vans get out to it and to the villages by it on the same trips: Brooklands, Wey Meadows, Whiteley Village, Weybridge and Burwood Park.

There are separate pages for the majority of towns around Surrey, and the ones listed above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list means nothing whatsoever about if our engineers come. Contact us and check rather than presuming, particularly where you are on the boundary or anywhere your satnav struggles with.

Use our map for the area shown here. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of it is ground our engineers work on, and none of that asks the car to move to us.

Stuck at the kerbside around St Georges Hill

Not everyone finds a sensible place to pull in. Set off, then noticed? Ended up on the verge of Spenser Avenue, or parked in some lay-by with your hazards going? That is a common call here. Not an unusual one.

Whether you remain beside the car or keep away from it rests on whether staying there is safe. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mixture further into the fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. We'll send our van to a difficult place without any bother, and for the vehicle that is much better than driving on.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

This is where the M25 comes in — under 3 miles away from St Georges Hill. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will frequently manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle turns uneven, and there may be smoke.

Come off at the next sensible junction, turn off, and do not start the car to move it. Long drive? Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the mixture. Say that on the phone, as it affects what goes in the van.

St Georges Hill is located near several notable places, including Brooklands, Wey Meadows, and Whiteley Village. St Georges Hill has a population of approximately 742 residents and is positioned about 17.6 miles from London. St Georges Hill offers a tranquil setting, with the nearby city of Westminster being about 17.4 miles away.

What our technicians do when our engineers reach you around St Georges Hill

  • The answers shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what went in, how much of it, and whether your engine has run.
  • The polluted mixture is pulled out of that tank.
  • Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever remains afterwards isn't the thing that caused the issue.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • Our technicians start the car and check it runs properly on new diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away. All of it is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted soon, long-term damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in St Georges Hill is a separate job

Never crank it: that first step stands whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this issue itself. Petrol weakens your diesel and strips the lubrication your fuel system relies on. Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate St Georges Hill page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain around St Georges Hill

One price would not be fair here, since this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

  • Whether the motor has been run or driven. This is the big one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much your tank holds.
  • Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's sensible for our van.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear and not as a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

Things our engineers get about petrol in diesel around St Georges Hill

Fuel drains on a St Georges Hill petrol station forecourt

A fair part of this work happens there, so yes. Our engineers visit Tesco and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the site's consent — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Ratio decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Driving takes the trouble along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you is not restarting it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a modification and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to remain off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a separate issue from a separate era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind puts back. Your pump still has to live with it, since that tank still has petrol in it later on.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. Our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.

Is your car still with you?

Do not switch your engine back on.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, and let the vehicle stay that way. A stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more often than people fear.
