St James: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
Never start the motor. While the fuel is still sitting in the tank and your engine has not yet been started, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires — and that gets decided in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they sit, throughout St James and the rest of Kent, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Call us so we can show you what happens next before you try much else.
What to try first about petrol in a diesel
- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for a couple of miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not start it. And once started, never rely on it: the fuel system is wearing down as you drive.
- Diesel burns, and before it burns it greases — the high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off also: flicking it on is frequently enough to prime your system, and priming draws petrol from that tank into exactly those parts.
- Topping up takes out nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance suggests — so do not pour diesel on top to water down it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Remain where you are if you sensibly can. A vehicle that hasn't moved is the quickest one to sort, and we would rather get to a difficult spot than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on St James Road, put the hazards on then keep the vehicle there.
- Know where you are before ringing. A postcode starting TN1 2, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than turning up.
- Ring 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three queries — what got in, roughly how many litres, and whether the engine has been started. Those responses settle whatever happens next.
Don't run it home. The commute has already forced a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of your Volkswagen Golf, and the journey back would close to double it for no purpose at all. Phone us from the platform if that is quicker. Our technicians do not need you standing over the car at High Brooms while we work, and our team would much rather talk to you tonight than learn on Monday.
Twenty to nine. Outside St Barnabas CofE VA Primary School. Late already, and your receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Switch the hazards on, leave the ignition alone, then call us. You might think three miles is nothing, in the Audi A4 or anything else — except that fuel is delivered on demand, and a dash taken in a hurry asks for a great deal of that.
Here's what a job in the car park at The Allotment typically looks like. Our engineers get to your car, ask what was put in, about how much, and whether the motor has run since — these three replies settle most of the work. Then the contaminated blend comes out of the tank, the fuel lines get flushed, and the filter comes off where your Ford Focus has a replaceable one. New diesel goes in and the fuel system is bled. Then we start the car, confirm it runs correctly, and you set off.
Sitting still, it gets no worse. The pump isn't turning, and so whatever occurred on the way to Grosvenor Recreation Ground in that diesel Citroen C3 is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on your engine to find more of it.
Leave the Kia Sportage by St Barnabas then ring us. We are direct about not driving on since a worn pump sheds, and what it loses passes onward with the fuel to the fuel injectors further along.
Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel
Most of the work starts at a pump, so a big share of it gets finished on site. Our technicians work on garage forecourts all the time, with the station's agreement, so if you're still at Shell that's normally where the drain gets done.
No place other than a garage can the mistake be stopped with the motor still cold. Fuel drawn out of that tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the engine is fired up and the vehicle is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the lines as well as the tank. That is still not a calamity, and we sort it out where the car stands. What settles it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.
Push the car out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they usually will. The next customer gets past the pump, and that is worth doing. Rolling the car four spaces does not merit starting the engine.
Service around St James
Being a residential suburb, St James sees a routine visit, and the villages nearby go along on that same journey: Sherwood and St Johns, Royal Tunbridge Wells and High Brooms, Sandown Park.
We do come. Those names above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all towns around Kent, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Assuming is the mistake to skip, above all on the boundary or somewhere your phone struggles. Call us and ask.
Use the map for the area included on this page. All of that is territory we serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't drive your car anywhere.
Roadside breakdowns across St James
Not everybody has the opportunity to pull over anywhere sensible. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on St James' Road as you worked it out after setting off — our engineers take that call often enough that it's the ordinary kind.
Clear of the car while it isn't wise to sit inside, beside it if it is. Don't start up your motor to limp the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that mix further into your fuel system. However tricky the location, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that is a lot better for the vehicle than driving on.
Driven it already? Stop, then see this
The M26 is the one which matters here, and sits under 15 miles from St James. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power falls away, your idle gets rough, and there may be smoke.
The next sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. On a longer drive — anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you ring. It alters what our technicians bring.
Where's St James?
St James is a suburban area in Kent, situated inland at an elevation of 116 metres, and is located approximately 30.8 miles from London. St James is characterized by its predominant flat housing and is close to nearby places such as Sherwood, St Johns, and Royal Tunbridge Wells. St James sits within the wider South East region, near the city of Brighton and Hove, which is 28.4 miles away. St James has a population of around 10431 residents.
Our call-out in St James, step by step
- Our technicians ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has the motor run? Those replies change what the work really is.
- The tainted mixture comes from that tank.
- Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever is left later on is not the thing that created the problem.
- Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.
- It's fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians check that it's running properly.
At that point it is ready to pull away. Our engineers do everything wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed soon, it is very rare for there to be lasting damage.
St James AdBlue removal is a distinct job
If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first step is the same — don't fire it up — but the problem isn't. Petrol dilutes your diesel and strips the lubrication your fuel system relies on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and deposits instead.
AdBlue removal around St James has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is usually the more serious of the two. We deal with both.
St James costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
What shifts the figure is set out below, because the job is not one job and our engineers can't truthfully put a single number on this page.
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
- How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much your tank takes.
- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is sensible for a van.
A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, works too.
St James motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around St James?
A fair share of this work gets done there, so yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear if working there is possible.
A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Whether the engine has run matters far more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. What decides how much work is required is whether that blend has been pulled through the fuel system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one, either way that's the query.
I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?
Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and leave the car off. Driving is what takes the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable a lot more frequently than people fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
A drain and flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
What petrol has weakened is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different fault. So no. Your pump still has to live with it, as your tank still has petrol in it later.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
There is no need to take it to a main dealer, as our engineers drain and clean your car wherever it is.
Is your car still with you?
Leave the engine shut off.
Turn it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.
