Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Stakes

With that tank still holding the fuel and the engine not yet turned over, nearly every job requires only a drain, so keep the motor off. That outcome is settled in the minutes right after filling up, and not by the amount that went in. Across Stakes and the rest of Hampshire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Our engineers shall show you what your next move will be. Phone — this goes ahead of all else.

Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will usually fail to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for a few miles. Most people have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not crank it. And having started, never trust it: your fuel system is grinding while you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. That is why your ignition is left off as well — switch it on and you usually prime the system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for precisely those components.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage the way that guidance assumes — so don't tip diesel on top to thin it. Type is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Our team would sooner get to a difficult location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, sit tight. Nothing is quicker to handle than a car that has not moved. On the verge on Woodsedge, that means hazards on then leave the car.
  • The van turning up rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode that starts PO7 8, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Have both ready before you call.
  • Ring 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three questions — what got in, approximately how many litres, plus whether the car has been started. Your answers settle all that happens next.

Never take it home. The drive in has already sent a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of that Renault Megane, and the journey back would close to double it for no gain at all. Ring us from the platform if that's handier. We do not need you standing over your car outside Bedhampton whilst our technicians get on, and our team would very much rather speak to you tonight than realise on Monday.

Diesel Skoda Octavia. A few litres of unleaded. Driven a couple of miles. Shut off now, at Lidl. That's the phone call we like, as the real question underneath it is about quantity through the pump instead of hours on the clock.

Do not risk it. The journey home from Fox and Hounds is quite possible, which is exactly the problem — a diluted tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears the components the fuel is meant to lubricate. Call us, then let the Ford Focus stay where it stands.

Sitting still, it gets no worse. The pump isn't turning, so whatever occurred on the way to Neville's Park in that diesel Mercedes C-Class is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on the engine to find more of that.

The pump sits ahead of the fuel injectors, so whatever a worn-out one gives off passes on with the fuel — which is why we are firm about not driving on. Call us, and leave your diesel Vauxhall Astra where it is near Waterlooville Library and Learning Centre.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Stakes

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

Pumps are where this work often begins, and where a large share of it closes. If you are still at the forecourt at Asda, that is usually where the drain takes place — we work on station forecourts routinely, with the owner's consent.

Before your motor has run — a forecourt is the single place the mistake ends up caught. Fuel drawn out of your tank and through your filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when your engine is started and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the fuel filter and the lines along with the tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our engineers sort it out where the car sits. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

Clear of the pump, the next motorist can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel it. Very much worth doing. Cranking it for four car lengths? No.

Can our technicians serve your side of Stakes?

These same trips bring us to Purbrook, Waterlooville, Crookhorn, Bedhampton and Leigh Park along with Stakes, which is a residential suburb.

Not on the list? That tells you nothing. The places above are just the nearest few, and most locations around Hampshire have a page of their own somewhere on the site. Contact us and enquire instead of assuming — boundaries especially, and anywhere the satnav may struggle with.

Use this map for the area shown here. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: the lot is ground we cover, and none of that asks your vehicle to travel to us.

Stuck by the roadside somewhere in Stakes?

Not everybody gets a chance to stop somewhere safe. Set off, then noticed? Ended up on the verge of Jasmin Grove, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights going? That's a common call here. Not an odd one.

Safe where you are? Remain beside it. Not fine? Move out and away from it. Don't start it up to get to a nicer location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mix deeper into your fuel system. However tricky the place, it's no problem for us to come to it, and that's much better for your car than carrying on.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

Here is where your A3(M) comes in, under a mile away from Stakes. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power drains away, your idle goes lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

Take the next junction that's safe, stop there, and never restart the car to move it. On a longer drive — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you phone. It alters what our engineers bring.

About Stakes

Stakes is a suburban area in Hampshire, situated near the coast and approximately 6 miles north of Portsmouth. Stakes sits at an elevation of around 42 metres, with its terraced housing stock reflecting the area's development as a residential community. Stakes is located near other suburban areas such as Purbrook, Waterlooville, and Crookhorn, and is about 58 miles south-west of London.

When our technicians get to you around Stakes: what follows

  • The replies alter the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of it, and whether the engine has run.
  • Away comes the contaminated fuel.
  • Our technicians flush your fuel lines and clear your filter, so what's left in the system isn't what caused the problem.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
  • After it is fired up, we make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away. We do all of it wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, it's very rare for there to be lasting damage.

AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Stakes?

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first step is unchanged — never crank it — but this fault is not. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that depends on it. That's petrol. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and build-up instead.

Both are ours. There is a separate Stakes page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Stakes?

Truthfully, no single number belongs on a page like this. The job differs. Here's what moves it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much the tank takes.
  • Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's safe for a van.

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and isn't time-critical, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: frequent questions in Stakes

At a petrol station around Stakes, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Our engineers visit Shell and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mixture sucked through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Driving is what shifts the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable much more frequently than people expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It is not an alteration, so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different fault and it doesn't replace what petrol has diluted. Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and your pump still has to cope with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, since we drain and clean the car wherever it is.

Still with the car?

The engine remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it after that. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
