Stanpit: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Whatever you do, don't switch the motor on, even briefly, to shift the car. Pause; leave the car off. The next few minutes settle it more than anything else: petrol in a diesel still unrun generally comes down to emptying then flushing, on the spot. Here is the sequence of things from now, anywhere you're in Stanpit.

Motor off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

Do the following before anything else, in this sequence.

  • Priming the system pulls petrol from the tank towards the components it damages, and turning the ignition on can be enough to do that. So your keys get taken out, and your ignition remains off altogether.
  • Topping up with diesel seems like it thins the problem. It doesn't: nothing comes out, and the tank simply holds more of the same.
  • Being seen comes before the rest beside moving traffic: switch your hazards on, and only then deal with anything else.
  • By hand, not on the motor: that's how it leaves the petrol pump. Get the forecourt attendants to help you push, whatever the miles.
  • Keep your receipt. It shows which fuel went in plus roughly how much, which is the first thing we'll ask.

Realised on the move? Get off at the next junction if you're on the M27, under 15 miles from Stanpit, and stop somewhere safe — not at the services further on. Stage one starts after that.

Stanpit fuel drain: has your engine run yet, or not?

One answer is what everything after this point depends on.

If it has not once been started:

  • Only your tank has petrol in it for now.
  • Where your car sits is usually where the work happens: a drain, then a flush.
  • This is the best position to be in, and the whole reason stage one counts.

Engine run, however briefly?

  • The fuel lines and your filter now carry petrol pulled from your tank.
  • A bigger run takes it all the way to the high-pressure pump and your injectors.
  • The job expands with the miles — lines flushed, filter dealt with, sometimes more.

Petrol does not lubricate. Diesel does, oiling your pump and injectors as it passes through, which is why the line falls where it does. Nothing is damaged by petrol that is just sitting in a tank. Petrol being pumped is grinding down the parts that shift the car.

Fuel drain of a diesel car in Stanpit, step by step

Calling about petrol in a diesel from Stanpit: what to have ready

Prepare a little, and the van finds you rather than circling.

  • Where you have stopped. A postcode beginning BH23 3 is the best start.
  • A road name is a help: Harbour Crescent, say, or whatever street you've stopped in. A car park does the trick too.
  • Describe a car park by what it serves — the one outside Lidl, for instance — and it's far quicker to find.
  • The make and model of your car, and the fact it is a diesel.
  • Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has its own Stanpit page.
  • How much. Litres from your receipt, or how long the nozzle was in.
  • If it's run, how far and how hard — and if it's run at all.
  • Hire or company car? Some agreements need the owner's go-ahead for this work, and sorting it before our engineers get there is faster than afterwards.

Then call 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — your car is at home with going nowhere — does the trick too.

Waiting for a fuel drain around Stanpit: what to do

Help, however well meant, is the thing that does the harm while you wait. So hold to these.

  • Wait with your car if it's safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere exposed, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.
  • Not to roll it a few yards, not to check it is all right, not for a passer-by's favour: no one starts it.
  • Something from the boot, oil meant for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive lifts the petrol.
  • Siphoning petrol into a can at the roadside is dangerous — and it also leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond your tank. Do not try a home-made drain.
  • Even your radio or your windows are not worth turning the ignition on for.

Van arrived? The fuel drain, one stage at a time

  • Fuel, amount, whether it's run: those replies decide this job, and that's why you get a quote after them instead of before.
  • Clearing it's how the blend gets taken out of your tank.
  • Flushing the lines follows, because a motor that ran has petrol past that tank, inside the fuel lines themselves.
  • Then the fuel filter: swapped where there's a serviceable one, cleared where there's not.
  • Bleeding the system comes once clean diesel is in.
  • The start-up. With fresh diesel in and the fuel system bled, it is fired up and checked to confirm it runs properly.

Your car has new diesel running through it before our technicians head off. When it has been noticed quickly, lasting damage is very unusual, and the vehicle returns to normal use right away.

Back on the road around Stanpit after the fuel drain

  • After it has been started on fresh fuel, there's nothing unusual to do: drive normally.
  • Pull over and ring us back if anything looks wrong early on — a light on the dash, smoke from your exhaust, an idle that runs rough, or a throttle with a dead spot.
  • Hold on to the documents. A hire company, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was done.
  • Read the label on the pump next time, not the colour of the handle.
