Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Staplegrove?

Never turn on your engine. While the fuel is still inside your tank and the engine has not yet run, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs — and that's decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, across Staplegrove and the remainder of Somerset, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Phone and our team shall tell you what follows next before you do much else.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will generally not run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for several miles. People have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't crank it. And once started, don't believe it: that fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.
  • Leave your ignition be too. Diesel does two jobs: it combusts, and before it combusts it lubricates that high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Turning the ignition on is frequently enough to prime the system, which moves the petrol out of the tank then into just those parts.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage the way that guidance presumes — so never put diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • We'd sooner travel to an odd location than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is easier to sort out than a motor that has not moved. On the verge on Manor Drive, that means hazards on then keep the car.
  • Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode starting TA2 6, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than showing up.
  • Three replies decide the whole job: the fuel you poured in, the ballpark amount of it, plus whether it has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Petrol in a diesel Renault Megane, sat outside Taunton since this morning? The wait has cost you nothing — fuel in a tank is idle. It was the trip in that pushed thinned diesel through the pump. Call us before you fetch the vehicle.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not just burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built bleeds past gaps instead, leaving the motor a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was designed round. Petrol weakens diesel, and diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the close-fitting parts it flows through — that is the entire process. It accounts for the normal Staplegrove Youth Football CLub call too: a diesel Audi A4 that travelled out without fuss and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, maybe smoking a little. None of which is the motor failing, and that's the part worth hearing. The fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.

About as well as this goes, once your engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Ford Focus left near Staplegrove Sports Club barely two streets on. Call us, and leave the car off. A short distance does really help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so the filter and the pump have had thinned fuel through them — hence flushing your lines rather than only clearing your tank.

The slimmer petrol nozzle fits a modern diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical rather than slapdash. Unfamiliar places see most of that for that reason. So: filled up close to St John without thinking, in a diesel Mercedes E-Class you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anyone realises, and mileage determines how much petrol gets to the fuel injectors.

By this point that tank is not where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, that blend is in the filter, your lines, the pump and the rail — and it doesn't come back out with that tank contents. A diesel BMW X1 that got near Taunton Vale needs the system flushed, not cleared.

Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

Forecourts are where the work mostly begins, and where a good portion of that finishes. We operate on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the owner's agreement, and so if you are still at Texaco that is generally where this drain gets done.

Before your motor has started — a garage is the one setting this gets halted. Our engineers can still sort it out where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been started and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a disaster, though the flush then has to go past the tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the keys are what settle that.

Staff will generally help out pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Take the offer. Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.

Do we serve your part of Staplegrove?

Wellsprings, Frieze Hill, Rowbarton, Langford, Dodhill — every one of these on the rounds that take us out to Staplegrove itself, a village.

If yours is not on that list it does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all towns across Somerset, and the ones named above are simply the immediate neighbours. Guessing is the mistake to resist, above all on the border or somewhere the satnav goes wrong. Phone to enquire.

The map is the patch this page spans. Every bit of that is territory our technicians serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You don't bring your car anywhere.

Stuck on the roadside around Staplegrove

Not everybody has a chance to stop somewhere sensible. A common call for us and not a rare one: realised after setting off, ended up along the verge on Stoneleigh Close or at a lay-by with your hazards on.

Remain with your car when it is wise to wait in it, and clear of the vehicle if it isn't. Don't start it up to get to a better location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that mixture deeper into the system. Our van driving to an inconvenient place is no problem for us, and it's a lot better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Driven it already? Pull over, and check below

Your M5 is the one which matters now, and it sits under 3 miles from Staplegrove. A drop in power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they come, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

The first sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and the injectors, and say so when you call. It alters what our technicians bring.

All about Staplegrove

Staplegrove is a small village in Somerset, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 38 metres. Staplegrove lies near several other local places, including Wellsprings, Frieze Hill, and Rowbarton, and is located approximately 23.9 miles from the city of Wells. Staplegrove has a population of around 578 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Staplegrove is also relatively distant from London, at a distance of 133.5 miles.

What comes next when our technicians get to you around Staplegrove

  • Our engineers find out what went in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The responses change the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting.
  • Away comes the contaminated mixture.
  • What is left in the system should not be what started the trouble, so the fuel lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleared.
  • Your system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • It is fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians check that it is running correctly.

That has the car ready to set off. Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been spotted early, and since everything is done where the car is, it never has to go to a workshop.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Staplegrove?

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first rule is the same — never fire it up — yet the issue is not. Petrol dilutes the diesel and removes the protection your fuel system relies on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and residue.

Both are ours. There is a separate Staplegrove page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Staplegrove

Our technicians can't put one number on this page honestly, since this job isn't one job. What shifts it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much your tank holds.
  • Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.

Things we hear about petrol in diesel around Staplegrove

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Staplegrove?

Yes — forecourts are where a good portion of this happens. Often, provided the site consents: BP, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that place is something our technicians answer on the spot.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that blend has been sucked through your fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving takes the issue along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely valuable thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a separate era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind replaces. After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

Standing next to it?

Leave the car switched off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, turn off, then let the vehicle stay that way. This is recoverable from much more often than people assume, and a stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in.
