Petrol in Diesel

The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Staygate

Not for a second, and not for moving it: the motor stays off. Stop there. Has not been run? Then petrol in a diesel will usually be a simple drain-and-flush job wherever your car has stopped — and no other factor settles that as much as the next few minutes do. Wherever you are in Staygate, this is how things run from here.

Motor off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

Before anything else, these — following this order.

  • Pull your keys out. Even the ignition on its own can prime your fuel system, drawing petrol out of the tank to exactly the parts it harms, and so leave it off wholly.
  • Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel removes nothing. You are left with a fuller tank of the same mix.
  • Being seen comes first near moving traffic: switch your hazards on, and only then deal with everything else.
  • By hand, not under your engine: that's how it leaves the pump. Get the forecourt staff to help you push, whatever the distance.
  • Hold on to your receipt: the grade and roughly how much are printed on it, and they're what we ask about first.

Realised on the move? Get off at the next exit if you're on the M606, under a mile from Staygate, and pull over somewhere safe — not at the services further on. Step one comes after that.

Staygate fuel drain: has your engine run yet, or not?

From this stage on, everything comes down to a single answer.

Not run, not even briefly:

  • The petrol is still inside your tank and nowhere else.
  • Normally it's emptied and flushed right where the car stands.
  • No spot is better, and it is why the first stage counts so much.

If your motor has run, even for a moment:

  • The lines and your filter already carry petrol pulled out of your tank.
  • Run it farther and that petrol gets to your injectors, having gone through the fuel pump first.
  • Miles is what makes it a larger job: the lines flushed, a filter seen to, and at times more than that.

Why the line falls there: diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump as well as your injectors as it flows through them, and petrol does not. Petrol resting in a tank harms nothing. Move the petrol, though, and it grinds down the very parts that move it.

Staygate, petrol in a diesel: have these ready before you call

A technician that circles versus a van that finds you: a little planning is the difference.

  • The ideal start is a postcode — one starting BD5 8 — for where you have stopped.
  • A road name is a help: Staygate Roundabout, say, or whatever street you've stopped in. A car park works too.
  • Name a car park by what it serves — the one outside Morrisons, for example — and it's much easier to find.
  • Tell us what the car is — make, model — and check it's diesel.
  • Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has a separate Staygate page.
  • How much. Litres from the receipt, or how long the nozzle was in.
  • Has it run? If so, tell us how far it went, and how it was driven.
  • Hire or company car? Some agreements want the owner's authorisation for the work, and getting it before we turn up is quicker than afterwards.

Next, 0333 366 0103. Not urgent, the vehicle parked at home with nowhere to be? Then works as well.

While you wait for a fuel drain around Staygate

During the wait, the damage comes from well-intended help — so these count.

  • Where the car has stopped settles where you wait. Exposed: away from it, away from the traffic. Safe: with it. Either way, safety ahead of your car.
  • A kind passer-by does not crank it. Nor does anybody wanting to check it still works, or rolling it a couple of yards.
  • Additives stay in the boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil take none of that petrol out again.
  • Clearing it yourself is out: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond the tank remains put anyway.
  • Not for your radio, not for the windows: your ignition remains off.

Van arrived? The fuel drain, one step at a time

  • Three queries. What was put in, how much, and whether it has run. Those replies set this job, which is why the price comes after them but not before.
  • Next the tank is cleared, so the polluted fuel is taken out.
  • If it ran, your lines are carrying petrol that has shifted beyond your tank — so they're flushed.
  • Cleaned, or replaced if the car has a workable one: your filter is dealt with next.
  • Bleeding the system comes once clean diesel is in.
  • We fire it up only after clean diesel has gone in and primed your system, then check that it's running properly.

Our technicians remain until it is running on new diesel. If it has been caught quickly, permanent damage is very rare, and the car goes back to normal driving at once.

Staygate, after your fuel drain: back on the road

  • Nothing unusual is needed after a start with clean diesel — ordinary driving is all.
  • Pull over and ring us back if anything seems wrong early on — a light on the dash, smoke from your exhaust, an idle that runs rough, or a throttle with a dead spot.
  • An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire company may ask what was done, so keep the paperwork.
  • Next time, check the pump. The label, not the colour of its handle.
