Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Steander? Don't Start It
Never fire up your engine. While the petrol is still sitting in your tank and the motor has not been started, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes — and that is determined in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, all over Steander and the rest of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. Contact us before anything else starts, and you will hear what happens from there.
The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Don't start the vehicle — and never believe it if it runs. This is the thing people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine given diesel normally just will not run, and so the motorist stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel given petrol generally starts, idles and drives away without complaint for a few miles. It isn't all right. It's grinding your fuel system as you drive.
- Switching your ignition on commonly primes that system, and priming is what carries petrol out of the tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it burns. Petrol handles the burning and none of the protecting. Leave your ignition off.
- Topping up gets rid of nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage in the way that guidance suggests — so do not pour diesel on top to water down it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Stay where you are if you safely can. A motor that has not shifted is the easiest one to handle, and we would much rather drive to an awkward place than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on The Chandlers, switch the hazards on then leave the vehicle there.
- Keep your position prepared before you dial. A postcode beginning LS2 7 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between a van showing up and a van circling.
- Three answers determine the entire job: the fuel you put in, the rough measure of it, plus whether anything has been going since. The line is 0333 366 0103.
Ring us before you collect it. Petrol into a diesel Renault Megane this morning, and the car at Leeds ever since? Then the wait has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is idle, and any wear was done on the drive in, when your pump was drawing diesel that petrol had weakened.
We're in car parks like the one at Co-op Food a lot, and it is almost never your fuel that complicates them. It's that bay. Vehicles both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. At times a height limit at the entrance, which determines if a van reaches you at all. So tell us how penned in you are when you call, and which way the car is pointing. If there is no room to work beside that Volkswagen Tiguan, our engineers roll it without the motor. That isn't fuss over a couple of seconds: starts prime things, fuel comes out of your tank on to your pump, and a motor shuffled twice for a better spot is silently a bigger job than one no one touched.
Someone will urge you to move the vehicle out of that gateway and sort it out later. Please don't. A wrongly fuelled diesel Skoda Octavia on the zig-zags at St Peter's Church of England Primary School is a nuisance; the same car restarted three more times to be courteous is a fuel system and not a tank. Every restart primes your lines and draws more petrol past the fuel filter then into the pump. Leave it, let everyone moan, and give us a call.
About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Mercedes A-Class left near Leeds Rifles War Memorial scarcely two streets on. Ring us, and leave it off. A short hop does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so your filter and the pump have had diluted fuel through them — hence purging the lines instead of only clearing that tank.
Cleared, not emptied — that's what a diesel Kia Sportage which got as far as Steeped Vessels needs. Running a diesel puts the mix into the fuel filter, the fuel lines, the pump and the rail, none of which empties with the tank, so by now the tank holds the smaller part of the problem.
Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel
Most of the job starts at a pump, meaning a big portion of that is completed on site. If you are still at the forecourt at JET, that is usually where this drain takes place — our technicians work on garage forecourts routinely, with the site's permission.
Before your motor has started — a garage is the single spot it is spotted. The few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for your key determine how much requires cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter require flushing as well as the tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still put it right where the car sits.
Roll the vehicle out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they generally will. The next driver gets by the pump, and that is worth doing. Starting it to shift four vehicle lengths isn't.
Areas we serve near Steander
Quarry Hill, Mabgate, Bank, Cavalier Hill, The Leylands — every one of them on the runs that carry us across to Steander itself, a residential suburb.
Not on that list? That says nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and nearly all towns around West Yorkshire have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. Contact us and ask rather than guessing, above all if you are on a border or anywhere the satnav can't find.
That map is the area the page covers. Our technicians work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of it, and the vehicle does not need to come to us.
Stuck on the roadside somewhere in Steander?
Not everyone gets a decent place to stop. A routine call for us instead of an odd one: worked out after setting off, finished up by the verge beside The Calls or in a lay-by with your hazards going.
Out of your car if it is not safe to be in it, by it when it is. Never restart your motor to limp it somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the blend further into the system. A technician coming to a difficult spot is no problem for us, and it is far better for your car than driving on.
Driven it already? Pull in, then see this
This is where the Inner Ring Road comes in — under a mile from Steander. A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they appear are typically a loss of power, a rough idle and some smoke rather than a neat stop.
Take the next junction that's safe, pull up there, and don't start it to reposition. On a longer trip — anything close to the under a mile to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors, and say so when you phone. It changes what our engineers bring.
A little about Steander
Steander is a suburban area located on the riverside in West Yorkshire, with a relatively low elevation of 30 metres. Steander sits in close proximity to Leeds, being only 0.8 miles away from the city centre. Steander is characterised by its predominant housing type, which consists mainly of flats. Steander is situated near other local places such as Quarry Hill, Mabgate, and Bank.
The call-out around Steander, step by step
- Our engineers ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has the motor run? Those answers shape what the work really is.
- The contaminated fuel comes out of that tank.
- We flush the lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what's left in your system is not what caused the issue.
- Our technicians put clean diesel in and bleed your system.
- It is fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it's running smoothly.
That has your car ready to pull away. Our technicians do everything wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and if it has been caught quickly, it is very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.
Steander AdBlue removal is a distinct problem
Do not start it: that first step applies whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the problem itself. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and deposits instead.
Both are ours. There's a separate Steander page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Steander?
One number wouldn't be fair here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:
- This is the big one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
- The sort of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's sensible for a van.
The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm rather than as a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.
Petrol in diesel: common queries around Steander
I am on a forecourt around Steander. Can you drain the vehicle here?
Plenty of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes. Regularly, provided the site agrees: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something our engineers answer on the spot.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What now?
Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. It is fixable far more regularly than drivers assume, even though driving is what moves the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all. What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the motor to stay off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different issue and it does not restore what petrol has weakened. Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Not at all. Our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a dealership.
Is the vehicle still with you?
Leave the car switched off.
If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off then keep it off. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.
