Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Stithians?

If you have not started the engine yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a car needs while the fuel is still sitting in your tank and the engine has not been started, which is why it's the following few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has come to rest in Stithians or the remainder of Cornwall, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there. We shall explain what the next step will be. Contact us — this goes ahead of all else.

What to do next about petrol in a diesel

  • As you drive, the pump and the injectors wear down. This is why you don't fire it up, and why you don't rely on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the bit motorists get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically will not run at all, which stops the driver and stops the wear with them. This one lets you keep going.
  • Flicking your ignition on usually primes the system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of that tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol handles the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition alone.
  • Do not water down it. Diesel tipped on top takes out nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • Stay put if it is sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Church Road, anywhere — an awkward place for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to sort out than a motor that never moved.
  • Get your whereabouts prepared before you call. A postcode beginning TR3 7 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van showing up and a van circling.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Say what got in, about how much, and also if the car has started. These three replies settle your whole visit.

On a forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel

Most of this work begins at the pump, meaning a large chunk of that is completed there. Still at Gulf? Then that is generally where it takes place. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the site.

A forecourt is the only setting the mistake gets stopped before your engine has run. Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still deal with it where it is. It does mean your lines and your filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the key.

The staff will generally happily push the car out from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get past. That is worth doing. Shifting it four lengths does not merit cranking the engine.

Service in Stithians

Hendra, Tregolls, Seaureaugh Moor, Tresevern Croft, Goonlaze — each of those on our journeys that bring us over to Stithians too, a village.

There are dedicated pages for most places across Cornwall, and the ones mentioned above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being left off this list says nothing at all about whether we come. Ring us and check instead of guessing — boundaries above all, and wherever your satnav may get wrong.

See our map for the area covered here. All of that is territory our engineers serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You do not move the car anywhere.

Twenty to nine at the gates of Stithians Community Primary School, running late, and your receipt in your hand says unleaded. Hazards on, ignition off, phone us. Three miles in your Nissan Qashqai seems like nothing, but a diesel pump delivers fuel to demand — and a frantic morning run demands plenty.

Don't risk it. The journey home from Seven Stars Inn is perfectly possible, which is precisely the issue — a weakened tank doesn't stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears the components the fuel is supposed to lubricate. Ring us, and let the Mercedes E-Class stay where it stands.

Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the precision components it flows through, and petrol thins it. That is the entire mechanism, and it accounts for the usual Half Moon Wood call: a diesel BMW 5 Series that went out there without a murmur and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, maybe smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs your fuel to hold pressure, not just to burn — so when your fuel thins, pressure that should build and stay built starts escaping past clearances instead, and your engine gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was designed round. None of that is the engine failing, which is the bit worth hearing: it's your fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is corrected.

Leave the Vauxhall Astra near The Stithians Centre then phone us. We're firm about not driving on because a worn-out pump sheds, and what it loses travels on with your fuel to the fuel injectors further along.

By this point the tank isn't where most of the damage is. Once a diesel has run, the blend is in the filter, the fuel lines, the pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with the tank contents. A diesel Citroen C3 that got close to United Methodist Free Church needs your circuit cleared, not cleared.

Stuck at the roadside near Stithians

Not everyone gets a chance to pull in somewhere safe. A normal call for us instead of a rare one: realised after setting off, landed on the verge of New Road or in a lay-by with your hazards on.

Okay right there? Remain with it. Not okay? Get out and clear of it. Don't start up the engine to nurse the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that blend further into the system. We'll send our van to an inconvenient place without any trouble, and for the car that is far better than driving on.

Run it already? Pull in, then check this

The M5 is the one which counts now, and runs over 50 miles from Stithians. It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Take the first junction that is sensible, pull up there, and don't start it to move it. Long run? Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it reached by the petrol. Say that on the phone, because it changes what goes in our van.

About Stithians

Stithians is a village situated in a riverside location in Cornwall, with Stithians being close to the nearby city of Truro, approximately 7.6 miles away. Stithians sits at an elevation of around 127 metres, surrounded by rolling countryside and nearby places such as Hendra and Seaureaugh Moor. What our engineers do when our technicians reach you in Stithians

  • Three things get asked before any quote — your fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • Out flows the contaminated fuel.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left after that isn't the thing that started the problem.
  • The system gets bled, on clean diesel.
  • Once it's turned on, we check it runs properly on fresh diesel.

From that point, you are ready to set off. Everything is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught soon, long-term damage is very rare.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Stithians is a distinct matter

The problem isn't the same, though the opening step is — do not start it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol weakens your diesel and strips the lubrication the system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Stithians page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Stithians

Honestly, no single number fits on a page like this. This job differs. Here is what varies it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that proportion.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.
  • Whether our van can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your car is.

Tell us your car, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a firm answer instead of a range. If it isn't time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Things our engineers get about petrol in diesel around Stithians

At a petrol station in Stithians, can you do a fuel drain there?

Plenty of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the station's permission our engineers visit Shell and the other forecourts around town regularly.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. Driving takes the problem along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly valuable thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, draining and cleaning is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different problem. So no. Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to take it to a franchised dealer, since we drain and flush your car wherever it is.

Still with the car?

Turned off is the way the car stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle later on. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Drivers fear this much more than they need to.
