Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Stockwell End? Don't Start It

Don't fire up the engine. While the fuel is still sitting in your tank and your engine has not yet been started, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes — and that's settled in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they sit, throughout Stockwell End and the remainder of West Midlands, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway. Call us so we shall explain what comes next before you try much else.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Don't fire it up. Fired up regardless? Then never trust it. Diesel in a petrol car normally cannot run, so the person stops and the harm halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away happily, for a couple of miles. Most people get that reversed. It's not okay — the fuel system is wearing down every mile you cover.
  • Leave your ignition be too. Diesel has two jobs: it ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates that injection pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Turning your ignition on is usually sufficient to prime your system, which pulls this petrol out of the tank then into precisely those parts.
  • That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It won't. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • A vehicle that has never moved is the easiest one to deal with, so wait where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Stockwell Road? Hazards on, then keep it there. An awkward location suits us better than a started engine.
  • Keep your whereabouts prepared before you phone. A postcode that starts WV6 9 and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it is the difference between our van turning up and a van circling.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Say what got in, about how much, plus if the car has run. These three facts decide the whole job.

The high-pressure pump did that morning drive working on a liquid that had lost much of the protection it is designed around. Diesel protects that pump, and the fuel injectors with it, before any of your fuel combusts; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So picture a diesel Renault Clio, topped up at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and parked sitting at Bilbrook until it dawns on you around eleven. Three hours of sitting have altered nothing about it. The couple of miles before that changed a lot, which is why the thing we ask is about mileage instead of hours. Phone. Leave it exactly where it is.

The tricky part is the bay, not your fuel. Motors either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and occasionally a height barrier on the way in that settles whether a technician can reach you at all — so when you call from a car park like the one at Spar, mention how much clearance there is around you and which way round the vehicle is. Those we visit regularly. Should there be no space to work alongside the diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, it gets shifted with the motor off, and not out of fuss over a handful of seconds of running: priming takes place at every start, more of that mixture leaves your tank for your pump, and two shunts into a roomier spot have quietly made a worse job of what was merely a vehicle standing still.

Your Nissan Qashqai remains where it is in the car park by Dog and Gun for the whole job, which normally runs like this. First our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run since, because most of the work rests on those replies. That tank is emptied of the contaminated blend, the fuel lines are rinsed, and the filter comes off if it is a serviceable one. With clean diesel in and your system bled, the vehicle is started and tested, and once it's running correctly you set off.

Rarely the problem, the location. On-street is the most common spot our engineers work, and a cramped parking space is far preferable to a motor that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you call from close to Tettenhall Paddling Pool, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a van can park next to without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then the Audi A3 gets drained, your filter changed where a workable one exists, the fuel lines rinsed and fresh fuel put through the entire circuit — as by now the worst of it is in the fuel lines, not your tank.

By now that tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and that mixture goes into your filter, into the fuel lines, into your pump, into its rail — and none of that leaves with your tank contents. A diesel Peugeot 208 that made it near Saint Michael and All Angels wants its circuit cleared. Draining isn't the same thing.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Stockwell End

Draining petrol from the diesel at a forecourt

Forecourts are where the job mostly starts, and where a large chunk of it ends. If you are still at the forecourt at Esso, that is usually where this drain happens — we operate on station forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement.

At a garage, it is halted with the engine never started, and no place else manages that. The few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the keys determine how much needs cleaning. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and your filter require rinsing as well as your tank. It is not a disaster, and our technicians can still deal with it where your car sits.

Attendants will generally pitch in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next driver get through. Welcome the help. Shifting the car four bays doesn't warrant starting the engine.

Parts our vans reach around Stockwell End

Stockwell End is a residential suburb, so our vans are out to the town and to the places near it on the usual trips: Tettenhall, Claregate, Palmers Cross, Blakeley Green and Aldersley.

Not on this list? That tells you nothing. The places above are simply the closest few, and the majority of places around West Midlands have a page of their own elsewhere on the site. Call us to check rather than presuming, particularly if you're on the border or somewhere a satnav gets wrong.

The map shows the ground this page covers. The lot is territory our technicians work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not bring the vehicle anywhere.

Stopped by the kerbside somewhere in Stockwell End?

A chance to pull in somewhere sensible does not fall to everyone. If you worked it out after setting off and landed on the verge on Danescourt Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that is a normal call for us and not an unusual one.

Whether you wait by the motor or step away from it hangs on if sitting there seems sensible. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the blend further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. Pressing on does the car far more harm than our van driving out to a difficult spot, and that is no bother for us.

Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

Your M54 is the road that matters here, and lies under 3 miles from Stockwell End. It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's some smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Pull off at the next sensible exit, switch off, and do not start the car to reposition. On a longer run — anything close to the under 3 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors, and tell us when you ring. It affects what our engineers bring.

What comes next when our technicians arrive with you around Stockwell End

  • Three things get established before any price — the fuel that was put in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.
  • Our engineers drain the tank of all the polluted fuel.
  • Our technicians purge the fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, and so what is left in your system isn't what caused the problem.
  • Bleeding your system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • We fire it up and check it runs properly on new diesel.

From there, you're ready to pull away. Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been spotted early, and as everything is done where your car is, it never has to go to a workshop.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Stockwell End?

The fault is not the same, though the opening rule is — never fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol weakens your diesel and takes away the protection your fuel system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and deposits.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Stockwell End page. Both are ours to deal with.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Stockwell End

Our engineers cannot put one number on this page frankly, since this job isn't one job. What shifts it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much that tank takes.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.
  • Whether our van can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your car is.

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and if it has run. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and is not time-critical, works too.

Petrol in diesel: common queries in Stockwell End

I am on a forecourt in Stockwell End. Can you drain it here?

Yes, and it is where a large part of this work takes place. Our engineers visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts locally all the time, with the station's consent — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you if we can work there.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it matters if anything has been run. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been pulled right through, or has it not?

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off. Driving shifts the problem along — out of your tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly valuable thing left to you isn't restarting the car.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all. What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to stay off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Your pump still has to cope with it, because your tank still has petrol in it later on.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You don't need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

You, and your car, still together?

Leave it shut off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, switch off, then let it stay that way. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
