Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Stoke Prior?

If you have not fired up your engine yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is almost always what a vehicle requires while the fuel is still sitting in your tank and the motor has not yet run, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel comes to your car wherever it has ended up in Stoke Prior or the remainder of Worcestershire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. Just one ring our way is plenty: our technicians shall explain what comes next. Do it straight away.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

  • Never start the car — and never believe it if it fires up. That is the thing motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine filled with diesel typically just won't run, and so the driver stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, ticks over and moves off just fine for several miles. It is not okay. It is wearing the fuel system while you drive.
  • Flicking the car's ignition on usually primes the system, and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition off.
  • Don't water down it. Diesel tipped on top gets rid of nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • Stay put if it's safe to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Shaw Lane, anywhere — an odd location for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to sort out than a vehicle that never moved.
  • A van arriving instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode starting B60 4, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Get both prepared before you dial.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three things — what was put in, approximately how much, and whether the engine has been turned over. The replies settle all that happens next.

Clearing petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

It kicks off at a pump, mostly. Regularly it ends at one as well. We operate on station forecourts routinely, with the station's permission, and so if you're still at Shell that's usually where the drain gets done.

The forecourt is the one location this gets caught before your motor has fired. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and our technicians can still deal with it where it stands. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for your key.

Wheel the car out of the way if the staff offer, and they usually will. The next driver gets through the pump, and that is worth doing. Four car lengths isn't worth a restart.

How much fuel the pump has pulled is what we're truly asking — not how long ago any of that was. So the enquiry we want runs like this: diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, a couple of litres of unleaded, a couple of miles covered, now switched off at Morrisons.

Twenty to nine. By Stoke Prior First School. Late already, and the receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Turn the hazards on, leave the ignition alone, then phone. You might think three miles is nothing, in the BMW 3 Series or anything else — except that fuel is delivered on demand, and a drive taken in a hurry needs a great deal of that.

Standing still, it gets no worse. Your pump is not turning, so whatever happened on the way to The Christopher Cadbury Wetland Reserve (The Flash Pools) in that diesel Ford Focus is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on the engine to find more of it.

Strange spots are where this happens most, and the reason is mechanical instead of slapdash: the slimmer petrol nozzle fits a current diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Filled up close to Aztec Aquaglide Aqua Park without thinking, in a diesel Dacia Duster you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anybody realises, and miles is what determines how much petrol ends up at your injectors.

That sluggishness is your fuel failing to build pressure fully, not your engine giving up — and with no warning for it, vehicles in that position normally get driven a second time before anybody phones. Please don't. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone limp, idle turned lumpy, and a diesel Vauxhall Astra now waiting near St Michael. Turn the car off then call us.

Service near Stoke Prior

As a village, Stoke Prior sees a steady call, and its neighbours nearby go along on the same run: Stoke Wharf and Upton Warren, Henbrook and Stoke Heath, Sharpway Gate.

If yours is not on this list it doesn't mean we never come — there are pages for most towns in Worcestershire, and the ones named above are just the closest neighbours. Guessing is the thing to skip, especially on a boundary or somewhere your phone fails. Contact us and ask.

The ground the page includes is on our map. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: the lot is ground our technicians work on, and none of that needs your car to come to us.

Stoke Prior: broken down wherever you parked

Not everyone finds a decent place to pull in. If you realised after setting off and ended up along the verge on Wall's Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that is a normal call for us rather than a rare one.

Fine there? Wait with it. Not safe? Move out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. We'll take the van to a difficult location without any trouble, and for the vehicle that's a lot better than driving on.

Run it already? Pull in, and check this

under a mile from Stoke Prior, the M5 is what matters here. It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you notice a thing. Then it's smoke, a lumpy idle and power draining away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone. Long run? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the mixture. Say that on the phone, because it affects what goes in the van.

Once we get to you around Stoke Prior: what follows

  • Three things get established before any quote — the fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • The tainted mixture comes from the tank.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
  • Your engine is turned on and tested to be sure it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

That has your car ready to set off. Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been noticed soon, and since everything is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Stoke Prior is a separate problem

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first rule is the same — don't crank it — yet this fault is not. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the lubrication your fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Stoke Prior page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Stoke Prior costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Honestly, no single figure fits on a page like this. This job varies. Here's what changes it:

  • This is the key one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, judged against how much your tank takes.
  • Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where your vehicle is, and whether our van can safely reach and work on it.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight instead of as a range. Not urgent, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then does this job.

Stoke Prior drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

At a petrol station in Stoke Prior, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a big portion of this gets done. Our engineers attend Esso and the other forecourts locally all the time, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It rests on the ratio rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run. Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been drawn right through, or has it not?

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What next?

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, and keep the vehicle off. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable a lot more frequently than people expect.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly is not a change and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to stay off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. We drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a dealership.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Don't switch the car on again.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, then let the vehicle remain that way. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this a lot more than they need to.
