Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Stoneyford? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Stoneyford and the remainder of Devon. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. When your engine has not turned over and the petrol is still inside that tank, a drain is almost always all it takes, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much went in. Our technicians can show you what your next move will be. Phone — this goes ahead of everything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will usually fail to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine enough for several miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never crank it. And once started, do not believe it: that fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.
  • Turning your ignition on frequently primes that system, and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the ignition alone.
  • Do not add diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice assumes, and topping up removes nothing — it simply gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A car that has not moved is the simplest one to sort out, and we would much rather drive to an odd place than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Saunder's Way, switch those hazards on and keep the car there.
  • Get your position prepared before you ring. A postcode beginning EX15 1 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van showing up and a van circling.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what went in, approximately how much, and whether your car has started. Those three answers decide your whole visit.

Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, left at Tiverton Parkway since first thing? The wait has lost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is inert. It was the drive in that pulled thinned diesel through the pump. Call us before you drive the vehicle.

If you have put petrol in your diesel Skoda Octavia in Stoneyford and you're now stranded at Tesco with a boot packed with shopping, ring us. Never fire it up once more to leave that bay. We will get to you, drain the tank, purge those fuel lines then put new diesel in so you can drive away. A mile or so at light throttle uses little of it, so these are often the easy jobs.

Leave it overnight. Phone us in the morning. Nothing about a diesel Ford Focus sitting in the parking area outside The Weary Traveller deteriorates as it sits, tank of petrol or not, and the job remains a straightforward one right up till the moment it gets taken home. The question our engineers bring is about that drive there: a cold motor over a short run is where petrol combusts least well, and whatever fails to burn can work its way past the piston rings into the sump.

Out there happy, back flat. If that was the drive to Head Wier Road Play Area, look at your tank. Diesel gets diluted by petrol, and thin fuel leaks past the tight tolerances meant to build injection pressure — so every further mile your diesel Dacia Duster covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, switch off, ring us.

Leave the BMW 5 Series near War memorial and call us. We are direct about not driving on because a wearing pump sheds, and what it gives off travels downstream with the fuel to your injectors further along.

Can petrol be drained out of your diesel on the forecourt?

It begins at a forecourt, usually. Quite often the work finishes there as well. If you are still on the forecourt at Shell, that's typically where this drain takes place — we operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement.

A forecourt is the one setting this is spotted before the motor has fired. Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through your filter and into your high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where it is. It does mean your lines and the filter need flushing as well as that tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for the key.

Attendants will generally pitch in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next driver get through. Take the help. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a start.

Parts our vans cover in Stoneyford

St Georges Well, Cullompton, Knowle, Ponsford, Willand — all of those on our trips that bring us over to Stoneyford too, a village.

Our engineers still come. Those names above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all towns across Devon, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from the coverage. Ring us and ask rather than assuming, particularly where you're on the boundary or somewhere your satnav misreads.

The ground the page covers is on this map. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is ground we cover, and none of that needs your vehicle to come to us.

Stranded at the roadside in Stoneyford

Not everybody gets the opportunity to pull over somewhere safe. Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside King's Mill Road as you worked it out after setting off — we take that call often enough that it is the usual kind.

Stay beside the motor if it is wise to sit inside, but out of the vehicle when it is not. Never start it up to get to a safer spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mix deeper into the system. However difficult the place, it is no bother for us to come to it, and that's much better for your car than carrying on.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

This is where the M5 matters, under a mile away from Stoneyford. Lost power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

The next sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. On a longer trip — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you call. It alters what our technicians bring.

Stoneyford itself

Stoneyford is a village in Devon, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 52 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Stoneyford lies near the city of Exeter, approximately 11.7 miles away, and is also close to other nearby places such as St Georges Well and Cullompton. Stoneyford has a population of around 1145 residents and is located in the South West region of England, about 147.8 miles from London. Stoneyford's riverside setting provides a unique character to the village.

Our visit around Stoneyford, step by step

  • Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that was put in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • Our technicians drain your tank of all the tainted fuel.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.
  • Your system gets bled, on clean diesel.
  • Your engine is started and tested to confirm it runs smoothly on new diesel.

That has the car ready to pull away. We do all of it wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a garage, and if it has been noticed quickly, it is very rare for there to be permanent damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Stoneyford is a different problem

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — your motor stays off — while this issue under it's a different one altogether. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Both are ours. There's a separate Stoneyford page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Stoneyford costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

What moves the figure is listed below, because this job is not one job and our technicians can't frankly put a single price on this page.

  • Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the key one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Which was put in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your car is, and if a technician can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us your car, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range. Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel: common questions in Stoneyford

Fuel drains on a Stoneyford petrol station forecourt

Much of what our engineers do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Our engineers attend Tesco and the other forecourts locally all the time, with the station's permission — tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.

Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether your motor has run matters a lot more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. What decides how much work is required is whether that mixture has been drawn through the system — since though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. It is salvageable far more often than people fear, even though driving is what moves the problem from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and flushing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There's no need to take it to a dealership, because our engineers drain and clean the car wherever it is.

You, and the car, still together?

Never switch your engine on again.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off and leave it off. Cold and still, a car is in the best place available — and drivers fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
