Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Stoneywood? Don't Start It
If you have not started the motor yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is almost always what a car needs while the petrol is still in the tank and the engine has not yet run, which is why it's the next few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has come to rest in Stoneywood or the rest of Falkirk, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. A single ring our way will be sufficient: we can show you what happens after this. Do it straight away.
What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order
- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine enough for a couple of miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not start the vehicle. And if started, don't trust it: your fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
- Switching the car's ignition on commonly primes your system, and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it burns. Petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition be.
- That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It does not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.
- We would sooner travel to a tricky spot than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is simpler to sort than a car that has not moved. On the verge on Kirkland Drive, that means hazards on then leave the car.
- A van arriving rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode beginning FK6 5, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Have both ready before you dial.
- Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three points — what was put in, about how much, plus whether the motor has been run. Those answers decide all that comes after.
The high-pressure fuel pump spent that morning commute working on a fuel that had lost a lot of the protection it is made for. Diesel greases that pump, and the fuel injectors with it, before any of the fuel ignites; petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. So take a diesel Volkswagen Golf, fuelled at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and parked standing at Larbert till you realise around eleven. Three hours of standing have changed nothing about it. The couple of miles before that did a lot, which is why the question we put to you is about distance not hours. Phone us. Keep the car right where it sits.
Every start primes that fuel system and pulls more of the mixture out of your tank and towards your pump — which is why a car shuffled twice into a nicer space has quietly turned into a worse job than one left exactly where it stopped. So where our technicians cannot work alongside the diesel Renault Clio, our technicians shift the car without firing it. None of that is fuss about a couple of seconds of running. Car parks like the one at Spar we work in often, and the fuel is hardly ever the complicated part: that bay is. Vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, occasionally a height barrier at the way in determining whether our van can reach you at all. Tell us how hemmed in you are, and which way the car faces.
Twenty to nine. Outside the local primary school. Late already, and the till receipt in your hand says unleaded. Switch your hazards on, leave the motor alone, then call us. You could think three miles is nothing, in the Skoda Octavia or anything else — except that fuel is metered to demand, and a dash taken in a hurry needs a great deal of that.
Chance the drive home from First Down? Not a chance. It will fire up and it will move off quite happily, which is the trouble — a diesel on a thinned tank behaves usually whilst wearing down the parts the fuel should be lubricating. Park the Nissan Qashqai and ring us.
Stop somewhere safe, switch off and phone us. Happy on the way out to Herbertshire Castle Park, gutless on the way back? Then look at the tank. Petrol weakens diesel; weaker fuel seeps past the tightly fitted components that build injection pressure; and the farther the diesel Ford Focus travelled, the less of that pressure it held.
On the forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel
A good chunk of the work is done at a pump, as that's where it usually starts. The drain usually takes place on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Gulf? Given the owner's agreement, that's a place we work, and regularly.
Before the motor has started — a garage is the only spot it is spotted. We can still put it right where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump, right from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, although the flush then has to go past your tank to your lines and your filter, and the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the key are what decide that.
Staff will generally help out pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next motorist get past. Welcome the help. Four car lengths isn't worth a start.
Stoneywood plus the villages next to it
Being a village, Stoneywood sees a frequent visit, while the villages round about go with it on the same run: Fankerton and Dunipace, Denny and Rosebank, Head of Muir.
If yours isn't on the list that does not mean we never come — there are pages for the majority of towns in Falkirk, and the ones listed above are merely the immediate neighbours. Presuming is the mistake to avoid, above all on the boundary or somewhere a satnav goes wrong. Ring us and ask.
That map outlines the ground the page covers. We operate at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and your car does not need to come to us.
Kerbside call-outs in Stoneywood
The chance to pull over anywhere suitable does not fall to everybody. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Tarduff Place since you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it's the normal kind.
Clear of the car while it's not wise to wait in it, beside it if it is. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the trouble: restart the car to reach somewhere better and the mixture goes further into the system with every mile travelled. However tricky the place, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that is much better for the vehicle than pressing on.
Petrol in a diesel, but the car has gone
This is where your M80 comes in — under a mile away from Stoneywood. A misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they come are usually a drop in power, a lumpy idle and some smoke rather than a clean stop.
Come off at the first sensible junction, switch off, and never start it to reposition. Assume the worst of it on a long trip. Anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you ring. What our technicians bring changes.
All about Stoneywood
Stoneywood is a small village situated on the riverside in Falkirk, with a relatively low elevation of 69 metres. Stoneywood lies close to the city of Stirling, approximately 6.4 miles away, and is near other local places such as Fankerton, Dunipace, and Denny. Stoneywood has a population of around 690 people and predominantly features detached housing.
What our technicians do when we get to you around Stoneywood
- Our engineers check what was put in, how much, and if the motor has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.
- The contaminated mixture is drawn out of the tank.
- Fuel lines are cleaned through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.
- We pour clean diesel in and prime your system.
- Your engine is fired up and checked to confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.
That leaves your car ready to drive away. Everything is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.
Stoneywood AdBlue removal is a distinct matter
AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — the engine stays off — while the problem underneath it's a separate one altogether. Diluted diesel, and no protection left for the system that relies on it. That is petrol. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and residue.
Our technicians handle both, and AdBlue removal around Stoneywood has its own page with the detail — including why it's often the more serious of the two.
Stoneywood prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain
Our engineers cannot put one figure on this page honestly, because the job is not one job. What shifts it:
- Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.
- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that ratio.
- Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.
- Where the vehicle is, and if a technician can safely reach and work on it.
A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and if it has run. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then works.
Questions our technicians hear about petrol in diesel around Stoneywood
I'm on a forecourt in Stoneywood. Can you drain it on the spot?
A big portion of this work gets done there, so yes. Regularly, provided the site agrees: JET, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that spot is something our engineers answer there and then.
Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?
Whether the motor has run counts far more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mixture drawn through it.
I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?
Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Driving is what moves the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it's recoverable far more frequently than people expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart the car.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
No. Carried out correctly, emptying and rinsing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No. Your pump still has to cope with it, since your tank still has petrol in it afterwards.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, because our engineers drain and clean your car wherever it is.
You, and the car, still together?
Keep the car turned off.
Switch it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. A still, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more frequently than motorists expect.
