Stourbridge: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
If you have not fired up the motor as yet, do not. A drain and nothing else is nearly always what a vehicle requires while the fuel is still sitting in that tank and the motor has not yet been started, which is why it's the following few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has come to rest in Stourbridge or the rest of West Midlands, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there. We shall tell you what the next stage will be. Call us — this goes ahead of all else.
Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Do not fire it up — and don't trust it if it fires up. That is the thing motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor filled with diesel generally just can't run, so the motorist stops and the harm ends with them. A diesel given petrol usually starts, idles and pulls away perfectly well for several miles. It isn't okay. It is wearing your fuel system as you drive.
- Two things, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors protected. Petrol only does the one. That is why the ignition is left off also — turn it on and you frequently prime that system, and that is petrol exiting that tank for precisely those parts.
- Don't tip diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system doesn't handle petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies, and topping up clears nothing — it simply gives you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.
- Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that has not shifted is the easiest one to handle, and we'd sooner travel to a difficult spot than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on St John's Road, put the hazards on and leave the vehicle there.
- Have your position prepared before you ring. A postcode beginning DY8 1 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between a van turning up and our van circling.
- What got in, roughly how much, and also if your car has run — those three facts settle the full call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.
Quarter past eight. A quick refuel on the trip in. Somewhere around eleven it hits you, and by then the diesel Renault Megane has stood at Stourbridge Town for three hours. Ring us then leave the vehicle where it is. What is key is the trip in, because diesel both combusts and — before that — protects your pump and the injectors, whereas petrol only ever burns. Those few miles ran your pump on a fuel drained of much of its protection, and no quantity of standing in a car park gives any of that back. Hence the question about distance instead of hours standing, and hence the advice to leave your keys where they are till we arrive.
If you have put petrol in your diesel Volkswagen Passat in Stourbridge and you are now sat outside Co-op Food with a boot loaded with shopping, call us. Do not start it a second time to get out of that space. Our technicians will come to you, empty that tank, clean the fuel lines and put fresh diesel in so you can drive home. A mile or so at easy throttle pulls hardly any diesel, so such jobs are often the easy ones.
Don't risk it. The drive home from The Chequers Inn is entirely possible, which is exactly the issue — a diluted tank doesn't stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears the parts your fuel is meant to lubricate. Call us, and let the Peugeot 308 stay where it sits.
Standing still, it gets no worse. Your pump is not turning, so whatever happened on the way to Black Country Millennium Forest in that diesel Nissan Qashqai is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on the motor to find more of it.
Turn off where you have stopped, and never start it to find somewhere better — near St Johns United Reform Church or anywhere at all. Rattling, a lumpy idle, white smoke and a dead throttle are a wrongly fuelled diesel Audi Q5 telling you what is wrong.
At the forecourt: removing petrol from the diesel
A fair chunk of the work ends up finished at a pump, since that's where it usually begins. The drain normally gets done on the spot. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the station's consent, that's a spot our engineers work, and often.
Before your engine has fired — the forecourt is the only setting it gets stopped. Our engineers can still sort it out where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been fired up and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a disaster, but the flush then has to reach past your tank to the fuel lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for the key are what settle that.
Roll the car out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they usually will. The next driver gets by the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a restart.
Stourbridge plus the villages near it
Old Swinford, Stambermill, Amblecote, Norton, Withymoor Village — all of those on our trips that carry us across to Stourbridge as well, a riverside town.
If yours isn't on the list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are separate pages for the majority of towns across West Midlands, and the ones mentioned above are just the immediate neighbours. Ring us and enquire rather than assuming, above all when you're on the boundary or anywhere your phone misreads.
The map marks the patch the page covers. The car never needs to travel to us. Our technicians work throughout every bit of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Stourbridge: stuck wherever you stopped
A chance to stop somewhere suitable does not fall to everybody. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up on the verge beside A491, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that's a normal call for us instead of a rare one.
Whether you wait beside the car or step away from it depends on if sitting in it feels safe. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the catch: restart the vehicle to reach somewhere handier and that mixture goes further into the system with every mile travelled. Carrying on causes the car far more harm than our van driving out to an inconvenient spot, and that's no bother for us.
A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?
under 10 miles out of Stourbridge, the M5 is what matters here. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.
Never start it to reposition. Pull off at the next safe exit and switch off. Long run? Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the petrol. Say that on the call, since it affects what goes in the van.
Stourbridge itself
Stourbridge is a town in the West Midlands, situated on the River Stour at an elevation of around 86 metres. Stourbridge lies approximately 9 miles south of Wolverhampton and 108 miles northwest of London, with nearby settlements including Old Swinford, Stambermill, and Amblecote. Stourbridge has a population of around 27,000 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Stourbridge is characterized by its riverside setting and mix of residential and industrial areas.
What follows when we get to you in Stourbridge
- Our technicians ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has the motor run? Those replies alter what the work actually is.
- The contaminated mixture is pulled out of your tank.
- Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever remains afterwards isn't the thing that created the trouble.
- The system gets primed, on new diesel.
- When it is fired up, our engineers confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.
That has it ready to drive away. Long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed soon, and because all of it is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.
A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Stourbridge
The problem is not the same, though the opening rule is — never fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the lubrication the system relies on. Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea in water.
Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal around Stourbridge has its own page with the full story — including why it is frequently the more significant of the two.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Stourbridge?
What moves the figure is set out below, because the job is not one job and our engineers can't truthfully put a single price on this page.
- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much the tank holds.
- Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where your vehicle is, and whether a technician can sensibly reach and work on it.
A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and if it has run. For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, is fine too.
Petrol in diesel queries from Stourbridge drivers
Fuel drains on a Stourbridge petrol station forecourt
A good share of this work takes place there, so yes. Often, provided the site consents: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something our technicians answer on the spot.
A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?
Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. What settles how much work is required is if that mix has been drawn through the system — since though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one, either way that is the query.
Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?
Pull in somewhere safe, turn off, then leave it off. Driving is what moves the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it is recoverable a lot more frequently than drivers assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the car.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
No. Carried out properly, clearing and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
What petrol has diluted isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate fault. So no. The pump still has to cope with it, since your tank still has petrol in it later.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.
Is the vehicle still with you?
Do not turn it on again.
Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and let the car remain that way. This is recoverable from much more regularly than drivers assume, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
Throughout West Midlands and in Stourbridge: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
