Petrol in Diesel

Stowupland: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Do not fire up your engine. If the fuel is still inside your tank and your engine has not yet run, a drain is almost always all it requires — and that's settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they sit, throughout Stowupland and the remainder of Suffolk, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. A single call to us will be plenty: our engineers will show you what happens after this. Try it right away.

What next? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Do not crank it — and do not rely on it if it runs. Here is the part most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor given diesel normally just can't run, and so the motorist stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol typically starts, ticks over and pulls away just fine for a couple of miles. It's not all right. It is grinding that fuel system as you drive.
  • Diesel combusts, and before it burns it protects — your high-pressure pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off as well: turning it on is frequently enough to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from the tank into exactly those components.
  • Never add diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes, and topping up clears nothing — it only leaves you a bigger tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A vehicle that has not shifted is the easiest one to sort, so stay where you are if you sensibly can. Stopped on the verge on Church Road? Hazards on, then keep it there. An awkward place suits us better than a started motor.
  • A van turning up rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode that starts IP14 4, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Keep both ready before you ring.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Tell us what was put in, approximately how many litres, plus whether your car has fired. These three replies shape your whole job.

Can petrol be drained out of a diesel at a forecourt?

It kicks off at a forecourt, usually. Quite often it ends there too. Still at The Co-operative? Then that's generally where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are routine for us, with the consent of the owner.

At the forecourt, it gets stopped with your motor never fired, and no place else does that. Fuel sucked out of the tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the engine is started and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers your filter and the fuel lines along with your tank. That's still not a disaster, and we sort it out where the car stands. What determines it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Clear of the pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel the vehicle. Well worth it. Rolling it four bays doesn't warrant starting the motor.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Stowupland

Stowupland plus the towns beside it

Those same rounds bring us to Thorney Green, Creeting St Peter, Stowmarket, Broad Green and Combs Ford besides Stowupland, which is a rural village.

There are pages for the majority of towns across Suffolk, and the ones named above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from that list tells you nothing at all about whether our technicians come. Ring us and enquire instead of presuming — county lines above all, and anywhere a satnav can struggle with.

See the map for the area covered on this page. Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of that is territory our technicians work on, and none of that needs the vehicle to travel to us.

Each restart primes the fuel lines and drags more petrol past the filter and into your pump. So a wrongly fuelled diesel Ford Focus on the zig-zags at Freeman Community Primary School is a hassle, while the same car fired up three more times to be helpful is a fuel system instead of a tank. A passer-by will tell you to move the car out of the gateway and fix it later. Please don't. Leave it, let everyone grumble, then give us a call.

Here's the entire mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the tight tolerances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which accounts for the normal Creeting Road Park call — a diesel Mercedes E-Class, out there without fuss and back down on power, lumpy at idle, maybe a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; weakened, it leaks past those clearances and not building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than the motor was engineered around. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped acting like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

The pump rests ahead of your injectors, and so whatever a wearing one gives off travels on with your fuel — which is why we're direct about not driving on. Call us, then leave the diesel BMW 5 Series where it is by Stowupland Village Sign.

Turn off where you have stopped, and never start it to find somewhere better — by Stowupland United Reformed Church or anywhere at all. Rattling, an uneven idle, white smoke and a limp throttle are a misfuelled diesel Vauxhall Astra telling you what is wrong.

By this point that tank isn't where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, the mix is in your filter, your lines, the pump and its rail — and it doesn't come back out with the tank contents. A diesel Peugeot 208 that made it near Stowupland Beacon and Village Sign needs the circuit purged, not drained.

Stowupland: stranded where you pulled up

Some drivers find no safe place to pull over whatsoever. If you realised after setting off and ended up by the verge beside Maple Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that's a common call for us and not a rare one.

Out of the car when it is not wise to wait inside, by it if it is. Do not start up your motor to limp it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mixture further into your fuel system. We'll send the van to a difficult location without any fuss, and for the car that's far better than pressing on.

Driven it already? Stop, then read this

Here is where the M11 comes in — under 50 miles away from Stowupland. Lost power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Get off at the next sensible junction, switch off, and do not start the car to move it. It alters what our engineers bring, and so tell us when you ring: on a longer run — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, your pump and the injectors.

A little about Stowupland

Stowupland is a small village in Suffolk, situated inland at an elevation of 61 metres, and is located near the towns of Stowmarket and Colchester. Stowupland has a population of approximately 992 residents, with a predominance of semi-detached housing. Stowupland is close to the nearby places of Thorney Green and Creeting St Peter, and is about 68 miles from London. Stowupland remains a quiet rural community with a strong sense of local identity.

The job around Stowupland, step by step

  • Our technicians ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers shape what the work actually is.
  • The tank is cleared of everything.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.
  • The fuel system gets primed, on new diesel.
  • Our technicians start it and check it runs correctly on clean diesel.

That leaves it ready to drive away. All of this is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, long-term damage is very uncommon.

A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Stowupland

Never fire it up: that opening step stands whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the problem itself. The protection a fuel system depends on gets taken away by petrol, which weakens the diesel. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Stowupland page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Stowupland prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One price would not be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much your tank can hold.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
  • Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and whether your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Not urgent, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Petrol in diesel: frequent questions around Stowupland

Fuel drains on a Stowupland petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a big portion of this gets done. Regularly, provided the site consents: Tesco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something our technicians answer there and then.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether the engine has run matters a lot more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres. Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, and keep it off. Driving shifts the problem along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly useful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the car turned off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Your pump still has to cope with it, as the tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, since our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Turned off is the way the car remains.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere safe, switch it off and leave it off. This is recoverable from much more often than people assume, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.
