Petrol in a Diesel Car in Stranraer

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Stranraer and the rest of Dumfries and Galloway. The first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. While the motor has not run and the petrol is still in that tank, a drain is nearly always all it requires, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much got in. Ring us and then our technicians can show you what happens after that before you attempt anything else.

Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • As you drive, the pump and the injectors wear down. That's why you do not start the car, and why you never depend on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel in particular — the bit motorists get wrong — is that it drives off happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine generally will not run at all, which stops the driver and stops the harm with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Diesel burns, and before it burns it protects — that high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition off too: turning it on is commonly all it takes to prime your system, and priming draws petrol from that tank into just those components.
  • Never water down it. Diesel added on top takes out nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.
  • A vehicle that has not shifted is the simplest one to sort, and so wait where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Sun Street? Hazards on, and leave the car there. An awkward location works for us better than a started engine.
  • Before you ring, have your position. Anything nearest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode that starts DG9 7 — that is what settles whether the technician turns up or circles.
  • Call 0333 366 0103. Say what went in, approximately how many litres, plus whether the car has run. These three details decide the whole visit.

Clearing petrol from a diesel at the forecourt

Plenty of the work begins at a forecourt, meaning a fair portion of that ends up finished at one. We operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the site's agreement, so if you're still at Solo that's usually where the drain happens.

At a garage, the mistake gets caught with the engine never run, and nowhere else manages that. Fuel drawn out of the tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is fired up and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the fuel filter and the lines as well as the tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our engineers put it right where the car is. What decides it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Move the vehicle out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they usually will. The next motorist gets through the petrol pump, and that's worth doing. Four car lengths is not worth a restart.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Stranraer

Car parks like the one outside Tesco are somewhere our technicians visit often, and your fuel is rarely the difficult part. The bay is: vehicles either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height bar on the way in that settles if a technician can reach you at all. So tell us how penned in you are when you ring, and which way the car is pointing. When our engineers can't work beside your diesel Audi A4 we will move it without starting it — and that is not fussiness about a couple of seconds of running. Any start primes the fuel system and sucks more of that mixture out of your tank and toward the pump, and so a vehicle moved twice into a roomier bay has silently become a harder job than one left exactly where it stopped.

Put diesel in a petrol motor and mostly it will not run, and so the person stops there and the damage stops with them. Swap it — petrol into a diesel — and the car starts, ticks over and moves off as though nothing had happened, while the high-pressure pump works without the protection the fuel is supposed to be providing. That's the snag, and it's why the diesel Dacia Duster will have seemed completely usual coming back from the local primary school. They always do. From the driver's seat there is nothing to caution you about, so nothing alerts you. Phone with approximately how far you went, and how hard; the second one matters more than the first.

Three answers determine most of the work: what got in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has run since. We ask for those answers as soon as we reach the vehicle in the car park outside The Bridge Arms. Next the tainted mix comes out of your tank, your lines are cleaned, and where your Mercedes E-Class has a replaceable filter, it comes off. After fresh diesel is in and the system bled, our technicians fire it up and check it runs correctly before you pull away.

Here is the full process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the close gaps it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which explains the ordinary Dick's Hill Park call — a diesel BMW 5 Series, out there without a murmur and back down on power, rough at idle, maybe a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; weakened, it escapes past those gaps and not building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than your engine was engineered about. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

A person sure of themselves will tell you to drain the car and put clean diesel in. Only half right, that. Try it on a diesel Skoda Superb near Stranraer Community Church and the engine will start — which is precisely why it sounds like sense. Here's the catch: there's petrol left in the fuel filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the engine does is pull it back through your pump once more. Draining a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left your tank. Phone us. The system gets flushed, your filter comes off where there is one worth removing, and that is what separates a fixed car from one that only starts.

Service in Stranraer

Stranraer is a coastal town, so our vans are out to the town and to the villages near it on those same rounds: Stranraer Town, Dicks Hill, Sheuchan Parks, Ochtrelure and Culhorn.

We still come. The places above are merely the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all locations across Dumfries and Galloway, so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Contact us and enquire instead of guessing — borders above all, and wherever the satnav can misread.

The map is the ground the page covers. The lot is territory our engineers work: a roadside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You do not move the vehicle anywhere.

Kerbside call-outs in Stranraer

Some drivers find no suitable place to pull over at all. A normal call for us rather than an unusual one: realised after setting off, ended up along the verge on Lewis Street or at a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Out of the motor while it isn't sensible to be there, with it if it is. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the problem: start it up to reach somewhere handier and the mix goes further into your fuel system with every mile driven. However tricky the place, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that's far better for your car than carrying on.

Run it already? Pull in, and see this

The local M77 is the one which counts now, and lies over 50 miles from Stranraer. A misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they come are typically a drop in power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a neat stop.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. It alters what our technicians bring, so mention it when you phone: on a longer run — anything near the under 50 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the injectors.

Our job around Stranraer, step by step

  • Three things get established before any quote — the fuel that went in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • We empty your tank of all the polluted fuel.
  • What is remaining in the system should not be what started the trouble, and so the fuel lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleaned.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.
  • It's run with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians check that it's running smoothly.

That has it ready to pull away. Our technicians do all of it wherever your car has ended up, which means it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed quickly, it's very rare for there to be long-term damage.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Stranraer is a separate matter

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your motor remains off — while this problem underneath it is a distinct one altogether. Petrol dilutes the diesel and takes away the lubrication the system depends on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and residue.

AdBlue removal around Stranraer has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is frequently the more serious of the two. We handle both.

Stranraer costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

One price wouldn't be honest here, since this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • This is the key one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much the tank holds.
  • Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is sensible for our van.

Tell us your car, the quantity and whether it has run, and you'll get a clear answer rather than a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Stranraer motorists

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Stranraer?

Much of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Morrisons is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there's possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It hinges on the proportion rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether the motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that blend has been sucked through your fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable far more regularly than motorists fear.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a change and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to stay off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct issue and it does not replace what petrol has diluted. That tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to live with it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

Waiting next to it?

Keep it turned off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and still, a car is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
