Stratford New Town: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?
If you have not fired up the motor as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car requires while the petrol is still sitting in your tank and the engine has not run, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has ended up in Stratford New Town or the rest of Greater London, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there. Call us so our technicians will show you what follows after that before you do much else.
What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn
- Do not crank it — and never depend on it if it fires up. Here is the part most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor filled with diesel generally just won't run, and so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, ticks over and pulls away quite happily for a few miles. It is not all right. It is wearing out your fuel system as you drive.
- Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors protected. Petrol only manages the one. That is why your ignition is left off also — turn it on and you commonly prime the system, and that's petrol leaving your tank for precisely those parts.
- Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance presumes — so do not add diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Stay where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that has not shifted is the quickest one to deal with, and our team would rather drive to an odd spot than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Leyton Road, switch the hazards on and leave it there.
- Our van turning up rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode beginning E15 1, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Get both ready before you ring.
- Call 0333 366 0103. Say what was put in, about how much, plus if your car has fired. These three answers shape your whole visit.
Call us before you fetch the vehicle. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Golf this morning, and the vehicle at Stratford International ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is harmless, and any harm happened on the drive in, when the pump was pulling diesel that petrol had diluted.
Twenty to nine by Colegrave Primary School, running late, and your receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Hazards on, engine off, phone us. Three miles in the Peugeot 308 feels like nothing, but a diesel pump delivers fuel on demand — while a rushed morning dash needs plenty.
Here is the entire process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the close tolerances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which accounts for the normal Major Road Open Space call — a diesel Mercedes C-Class, out there without fuss and back down on power, lumpy at idle, perhaps a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; diluted, it bleeds past those gaps rather than building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than the engine was engineered about. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.
Why we are blunt about not driving on: your pump waits before your injectors, and so whatever a wearing pump sheds passes onward with your fuel. Leave the BMW 5 Series close to Leyton House Working Mens Club And Institute and phone us.
That deadness is your fuel failing to build pressure fully, not the engine packing up — and with no dashboard light for it, motors in that position generally get driven again before anybody calls. Don't. A few streets is all it got: throttle gone limp, idle turned lumpy, and a diesel Audi Q5 now waiting near Community Road Tenants And Residents Social Club. Switch the car off then call us.
Clearing petrol from your diesel on the forecourt
A fair part of this job is done at a pump, since that's where it mostly kicks off. We operate on station forecourts regularly, with the station's agreement, and so if you're still at TotalEnergies that is usually where this drain gets done.
Nowhere but a forecourt can the mistake be halted with the engine still unstarted. Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from your tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a calamity, and our engineers can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean the lines and your filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the keys.
The attendants will normally help you wheel the car away from the pump so the next customer can get by. That is worth doing. Moving the car four lengths does not merit cranking the motor.
Parts our vans reach near Stratford New Town
These same trips get us to Maryland, Stratford, Temple Mills, Stratford Marsh and Hackney Marsh besides Stratford New Town, which is a residential suburb.
Not on that list? That tells you nothing. The places above are simply the nearest few, and nearly all towns in Greater London have a page of their own somewhere on the site. On a boundary, or somewhere your phone gets wrong? Call us and check rather than presuming.
The ground the page includes sits on the map. The lot is ground we serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't move the vehicle anywhere.
Stratford New Town: stranded wherever you stopped
Not everybody gets a suitable spot to stop. A normal call for us rather than a rare one: realised after setting off, landed on the verge of Parkway Crescent or in a lay-by with the hazard lights on.
Clear of the vehicle if it's not wise to be in it, with it when it is. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along perfectly willingly, and that's the trouble: start it up to reach somewhere safer and the mix goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered. We'll take the van to an inconvenient spot without any fuss, and for your car that's much better than driving on.
Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has rolled
The local M11 is the road which matters now, and it lies under 3 miles from Stratford New Town. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle turns rough, and there may be some smoke.
Take the first junction that's sensible, pull up there, and never restart the vehicle to move it. It affects what our technicians bring, so tell us when you call: on a longer run — anything near the under 5 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors.

Our call-out around Stratford New Town, step by step
- The answers alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what went in, how much of that, and whether the motor has run.
- That tank gets emptied of it.
- Our technicians purge the lines and clean your filter, so what is remaining in the system is not what caused the trouble.
- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.
- It's run with new diesel in it, and our engineers check that it's running smoothly.
From there, you're ready to set off. Our engineers do everything wherever the car has ended up, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught early, it is very unusual for there to be long-term damage.
AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Stratford New Town?
Don't crank it: that opening instruction stands whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this problem itself. Petrol dilutes the diesel and strips the lubrication the fuel system relies on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and deposits.
Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Stratford New Town page. Both are ours to deal with.
Stratford New Town prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
Frankly, no single number fits on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what changes it:
- This is the key one: whether the motor has been started, or driven.
- How much of the wrong fuel went in, measured against how much your tank takes.
- Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there safely?
Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range. If it is not pressing — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.
Stratford New Town drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel
Fuel drains on a Stratford New Town petrol station forecourt
Yes, and it is where a good share of this work gets done. Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you if our technicians can work there. With the site's consent our technicians attend Asda and the other forecourts nearby regularly.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters if anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that blend has been sucked through the fuel system.
I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?
Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of the tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable far more commonly than people fear.
My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?
A drain and flush carried out properly is not an alteration and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle switched off.
Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home
No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a different fault and it does not put back what petrol has thinned. That tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to cope with it.
Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?
Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.
Is your car still with you?
Shut off is the way it stays.
Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, turn off, and let it stay that way. A still, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from far more commonly than drivers assume.
