Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Streatham Park

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, across Streatham Park and the rest of Greater London. The very first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. When your engine has not yet turned over and the fuel is still inside that tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. Phone before anything else happens, so you will know what happens next.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • As you drive, the pump and your injectors wear down. That's why you do not fire it up, and why you don't depend on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel especially — the bit motorists get wrong — is that it pulls away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally will not run at all, which stops the driver and stops the harm with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Diesel burns, and before it burns it greases — that injection pump, those injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition alone also: turning it on is commonly all it takes to prime the system, and priming moves petrol from that tank into exactly those components.
  • Never put diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice suggests, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it simply gives you a larger tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that has not moved is the simplest one to handle, and we would rather get to a difficult spot than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Nimrod Road, switch the hazards on and keep it there.
  • The van showing up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode starting SW16 1, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Have both ready before you call.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three questions — what got in, approximately how much, and if the engine has been run. Those responses decide whatever follows.

Removing petrol from your diesel at a forecourt

A large portion of the job gets finished at a forecourt, because that's where it often kicks off. We work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the station's permission, and so if you're still at Applegreen that is usually where the drain takes place.

No place other than a garage can it be halted with the engine still cold. The few seconds between checking your receipt and going for your key decide how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter require flushing as well as your tank. It's not a disaster, and our engineers can still sort it out where your car sits.

Roll the vehicle out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they generally will. The next motorist gets by the pump, and that is worth doing. Starting the car over four vehicle lengths? Don't.

Places our team reach near Streatham Park

As a residential suburb, Streatham Park has a frequent visit, while the villages close by go along on that same journey: Furzedown and Tooting Bec Common, Streatham and Streatham Vale, Tooting.

If yours is not on this list it does not mean we never come — there are pages for nearly all locations in Greater London, and the ones named above are merely the nearest neighbours. Presuming is the habit to avoid, above all on a boundary or somewhere your satnav struggles. Phone and check.

Use our map for the area shown here. Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of it is territory our technicians work on, and none of it needs your vehicle to travel to us.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, and so have both prepared. The Nissan Qashqai will have felt perfectly normal on the way back from St Leonard's Church of England Primary School — they all do, and that's the catch. Diesel into a petrol motor mostly won't run at all: the person stops, and so does the harm. Petrol into a diesel fires up, idles, drives off like nothing happened, whilst the high-pressure fuel pump gets on with its work minus the protection the fuel should be giving it. No warning appears, because behind the wheel nothing seems wrong.

Here's the entire process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the fine clearances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which accounts for the ordinary Transition Town Tooting Garden call — a diesel Mercedes A-Class, out there without a murmur and back down on power, uneven at idle, maybe a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; thinned, it leaks past those clearances instead of building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than the motor was engineered round. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped acting like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the till receipt, and parked the diesel Kia Sportage up near Fayland Integrated Children's Centre a couple of hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Ring us then leave the vehicle off. The short drive genuinely assists, but it was still a start and a drive, so thinned fuel has arrived at the filter and the pump — which is why we rinse the lines instead of only emptying that tank.

Authorisation first, where there's a hire firm or a company behind the vehicle — some contracts require it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, phone us about your diesel Audi Q5 by Multi-Use Games Area. You'll not know how full your tank was. Barely anybody does, two days into a vehicle, and it gets worked out on the spot regardless. Our engineers ask because the harm petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a few litres in a nearly empty tank make a much stronger mixture than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is built to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the engine knocks and smokes and flattens off.

Drain it and put new diesel in — that's the advice you will get, usually from somebody sure of themselves, and it's half true. Do exactly that to a diesel Volvo XC60 close to Parish Church of St Alban and it would start, which is what makes the suggestion sound reasonable. What occurs next is the problem: the engine at once sucks the petrol left sitting in the fuel filter and the feed lines straight back through your pump, since emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead. Our engineers flush the system and take the fuel filter off where the car has a serviceable one, which is the difference between the vehicle being put right and the car just starting.

Streatham Park: stranded wherever you stopped

A chance to pull in somewhere safe does not come to everybody. Set off, then realised? Ended up by the verge of Colwyn Close, or sat in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That's a common call here. Not a rare one.

Clear of the vehicle while it's not safe to sit in it, beside it when it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that mixture further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. Our van coming to an awkward spot is no bother for us, and it's much better for the car than driving on.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

under 10 miles out of Streatham Park, the M4 is what matters here. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power ebbs away, your idle goes uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Get off at the next sensible junction, turn off, and never restart it to move it. Suppose the worst of that on a long run. Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you ring. What our engineers bring differs.

Where's Streatham Park?

Streatham Park is a suburban area in south London, situated approximately 5.6 miles from central London and 5.2 miles from Westminster. Streatham Park sits at an elevation of around 35 metres, with its predominant housing stock consisting of flats. Streatham Park is located near several other notable areas, including Furzedown and Tooting Bec Common, and is part of the larger Streatham community.

What comes next when our technicians reach you in Streatham Park

  • The answers shape the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of it, and if your engine has run.
  • Away goes the tainted mixture.
  • Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever remains after that isn't the thing that started the trouble.
  • Priming follows, once new diesel is in.
  • Once it's turned on, our engineers check it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

The car is then ready for you to drive away. All of it is done where the vehicle is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Streatham Park AdBlue removal is a distinct problem

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the engine remains off — while the fault underneath it's a distinct one altogether. Petrol thins the diesel and takes away the lubrication your fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and deposits in its place.

Both are ours. There is a separate Streatham Park page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Streatham Park

What changes the price is set out below, because the job isn't one job and we cannot frankly put a single number on this page.

  • Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Which got in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and if your motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. If it isn't pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Streatham Park motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

I am on a forecourt around Streatham Park. Can you drain it on the spot?

Much of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes. Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the station's agreement we attend Tesco and the other forecourts locally regularly.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Ratio decides it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is whether that mix has been drawn through the system.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of your tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable a lot more commonly than motorists fear.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and cleaning is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle turned off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a different problem from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back. Your pump still has to cope with it, as the tank still has petrol in it later on.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

Still with your car?

Turned off is the way the car stays.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, switch off, and let the car stay that way. Cold and parked, a car is in the best place available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
