Petrol in Diesel

Petrol in a Diesel Car in Street

Never turn on the motor. If the petrol is still inside the tank and the motor has not turned over, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires — and that's decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, throughout Street and the rest of Somerset, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. One ring our way will be plenty: our technicians can show you what happens from here. Do this right away.

The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Don't start it — and never rely on it when it runs. That is the thing people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor given diesel usually just cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the harm halts with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, idles and moves off without complaint for a few miles. It is not okay. It is wearing the fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps your injection pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the ignition stays off as well — turn it on and you frequently prime that system, and that is petrol exiting your tank for precisely those parts.
  • Never tip diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage as that advice assumes, and topping up clears nothing — it only leaves you a larger tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Stay put if it's safe to. Hazards on, motor off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Farm Road, anywhere — a difficult spot for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to sort out than a motor that never moved.
  • Get your location ready before you phone. A postcode beginning BA16 0 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van arriving and our van circling.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three queries — what got in, about how much, and if the car has been run. Your replies decide all that comes after.

At the forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

The work kicks off at the pump, usually. Often enough the work wraps up at one too. Still at Sainsbury's? Then that is usually where it happens. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the site.

Nowhere else other than the forecourt can this be stopped with the engine still cold. Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That's not a disaster, and our technicians can still deal with it where it is. It does mean the lines and your filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the keys.

Staff will usually chip in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Accept the offer. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a restart.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Street

The call our engineers want runs like this: diesel Peugeot 308, a few litres of unleaded, run a couple of miles, now turned off outside The Co-operative Food. What we are really asking is how much fuel your pump has pulled — not how long ago it was.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, and so have both prepared. Your Audi A4 will have seemed completely usual on the way back from Hindhayes Infant School — they all do, and that is the catch. Diesel into a petrol car mostly will not run at all: the driver stops, and so does the harm. Petrol into a diesel starts, ticks over, pulls away like nothing happened, whilst the high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the protection your fuel should be giving it. No warning arrives, because behind the wheel nothing looks wrong.

Never drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse while the car sits, since a diesel Vauxhall Astra parked outside Merriman Park is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.

Your pump rests upstream of the injectors, so whatever a wearing one loses passes downstream with the fuel — which is why we're blunt about not driving on. Call us, and leave your diesel Ford Kuga where it's by Crispin Hall.

A vehicle you collected two days ago gets driven further before anybody notices anything, which is the hire and courtesy problem in one sentence — and how far it went is what decides the amount of petrol arriving at the fuel injectors. Nothing sloppy about the mistake itself: a newer diesel filler neck accepts the narrower petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, so strange places see most of these. Call us from wherever you are, close to Crispin Community Centre or not, and we will get to the Mercedes A-Class.

Street plus the towns next to it

Lower Leigh, Middle Leigh, Portway, Stone Hill, Portland — all of these on the rounds that carry us across to Street as well, a town.

We do come. Those names above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for nearly all towns in Somerset, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage. Phone and ask instead of presuming — county lines above all, and wherever a satnav might misread.

Look at this map for the ground covered on this page. Your car doesn't need to come to us. Our technicians work across the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stranded at the kerbside in Street

The chance to pull in anywhere sensible does not fall to everyone. Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Leigh Road as you worked it out after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it's the usual kind.

Safe there? Sit beside it. Not fine? Step out and away from it. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mixture further into the system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere better. However awkward the place, it's no problem for us to get to it, and that is much better for the vehicle than pressing on.

So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

under 10 miles from Street, the M5 is what matters here. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power drains away, your idle turns lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

Never start it to move it. Pull off at the first safe exit and switch off. Assume the worst of it on a long run. Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you ring. What we bring alters.

A bit about Street

Street is a town in inland Somerset, situated near the city of Wells and the surrounding villages of Lower Leigh, Middle Leigh, and Portway. Street sits at a relatively low elevation of 18 metres, and its semi-detached housing stock reflects its development as a residential centre. Street is located approximately 115 miles west of London, making it a commuter town with a population of around 12,982 residents.

What comes next when our engineers reach you around Street

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has the engine run? Those replies shape what the work really is.
  • Your tank is emptied of everything.
  • Fuel lines are purged through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.
  • Your system gets bled, on new diesel.
  • We start it and make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

That has it ready to set off. Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been noticed early, and because everything is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

A distinct matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Street

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — your engine remains off — whereas the fault beneath it's a different one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the protection the system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Our technicians deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Street has its own page with the details — including why it is frequently the more serious of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Street

Our technicians can't put one figure on this page honestly, since this job isn't one job. What shifts it:

  • Whether the motor has been run or driven. This is the big one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where your vehicle is, and if a technician can safely reach and work on it.

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and if it has run. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and is not time-critical, is fine too.

Street drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

I am on a forecourt around Street. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Plenty of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes. Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there's possible.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. What determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through the system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Driving shifts the trouble along — out of that tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really helpful thing left to you is not restarting the car.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Your tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to put up with it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

There's no need to bring it to a main dealer, because our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is.

Waiting next to it?

The motor remains off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, turn off, then let it remain that way. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.
