Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Strouden?
Never start your engine. While the fuel is still sitting in the tank and the motor has not yet run, a tank drain is almost always all it requires — and that's settled in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, across Strouden and the remainder of Dorset, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive. Our engineers can explain what the following step is. Call us — that goes before all else.
Petrol in a diesel: what to do first
- Whenever you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors suffer. This is why you don't crank it, and why you do not depend on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the point motorists get wrong — is that it drives away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally won't run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.
- Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the car's ignition remains off as well — flick it on and you often prime the system, and that's petrol exiting the tank for exactly those parts.
- Do not add diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage as that guidance presumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it simply leaves you a fuller tank of the same blend. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
- A motor that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to sort out, so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Mallard Road? Hazards on, and keep it there. An awkward spot works for us better than a started diesel.
- Before you ring, have your location. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode starting BH8 9 — that is what settles whether our van shows up or circles.
- Dial 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three things — what was put in, about how many litres, plus whether the engine has been turned over. The replies settle all that comes after.
On the forecourt: removing petrol from a diesel
The job begins at a pump, typically. Frequently the job finishes there too. If you are still at the forecourt at Esso, that's typically where this drain takes place — we work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's permission.
Before the engine has run — a forecourt is the single location it gets halted. The few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the keys decide how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from your tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter need flushing as well as your tank. It's not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where the car sits.
Away from the pump, the next motorist can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you move it. Worth it. Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.
Petrol in your Renault Clio, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you outside Aldi, somewhere in Strouden? Then phone, and leave the motor out of it — not even to leave the spot. A technician heads your way. Tank cleared, fuel lines rinsed, new diesel in, and home you go. Easy throttle over a mile draws very little, and so these are often the easy jobs.
It will fire up. It will drive off perfectly well. That's the problem, as a diesel on a weakened tank behaves generally whilst wearing down the parts its fuel should be protecting. So no, never try the drive home from The Broadway — leave the Ford Focus then call us.
Standing still, it gets no worse. The pump isn't turning, and so whatever happened on the way to Bournemouth School Fields in that diesel Peugeot 3008 is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on the engine to find more of that.
About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Mercedes E-Class left by Sir David English Sport Centre barely two streets on. Call us, then leave it off. A short distance does really help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the fuel filter and the pump have had weakened fuel through them — hence purging the fuel lines instead of only clearing the tank.
Repaired and starting aren't the same thing, and the difference is your system: we flush it, and take the filter off where there's a serviceable one. Compare that with the sure of themselves tip you'll get — drain it, refill with clean diesel. Half true. Do exactly that to a diesel Vauxhall Astra by TK Maxx and it'll start, which is exactly why the suggestion sounds sensible. Then the motor sucks the petrol left behind in the fuel filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through the pump, as draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead.
Service near Strouden
Haddon Hill, Charminster, Mill Throop, Townsend, Throop — every one of them on our trips that take us out to Strouden too, a residential suburb.
Not on this list? It means nothing. The names above are simply the nearest few, and the majority of places around Dorset have a page of their own elsewhere on this site. Presuming is the mistake to skip, particularly on a boundary or anywhere your phone gets lost. Phone to ask.
See this map for the ground covered on this page. The vehicle doesn't need to travel to us. Our technicians work throughout all of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Roadside call-outs around Strouden
Not everyone has a chance to pull over somewhere safe. Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Curlew Road as you noticed after setting off — our engineers take that call regularly enough that it is the ordinary kind.
Out of the vehicle if it is not wise to sit in it, beside it if it is. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier. We'll bring our van to an awkward location without any trouble, and for the vehicle that's much better than carrying on.
A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?
Here is where the M27 matters, under 25 miles out of Strouden. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will frequently manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle gets uneven, and there may be some smoke.
The first safe exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. Long trip? Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the petrol. Say that on the phone, because it changes what goes in the van.
Where is Strouden?
Strouden is a coastal suburban area in Dorset, situated near the cities of Southampton and Bournemouth. Strouden sits at a low elevation of around 10 metres, close to the sea and near other local places such as Haddon Hill and Charminster. Strouden has a population of approximately 4549 people, predominantly living in detached housing. Strouden is also within commuting distance of major cities, including London which is around 91 miles away.
What happens when our technicians reach you around Strouden
- Our technicians ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has the motor run? Those replies change what the work really is.
- The tainted fuel comes out of your tank.
- Our engineers flush your fuel lines and clear the filter, so what's left in the fuel system is not what started the issue.
- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.
- The engine is started and tested to be sure it runs properly on new diesel.
From there, you are ready to drive away. There's no need to go to a garage at any stage, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it is noticed quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.
A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Strouden
The issue is not the same, though the opening step is — don't fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and takes away the lubrication your fuel system relies on. Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.
Our technicians handle both, and AdBlue removal around Strouden has its own page with the details — including why it is frequently the more serious of the two.
Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Strouden
Frankly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. The job varies. Here's what moves it:
- Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the key one.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much the tank takes.
- The type of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
- Where the vehicle is, and if a technician can safely get to and work on it.
Tell us your vehicle, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a straight answer instead of a range. Not time-critical, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.
Petrol in diesel questions from Strouden motorists
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Strouden?
Much of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Asda Express is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear whether working there is possible.
Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?
It rests on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that mixture has been drawn through the system.
Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car
Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop. Driving is what moves the problem from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it is fixable a lot more often than drivers expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the car.
Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties
A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a change and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.
Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate problem and it doesn't replace what petrol has thinned. Later? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.
Still with your vehicle?
The engine remains off.
Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, switch off, and let it stay that way. A still, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than people fear.
