Petrol in a Diesel Car in Summersdale
With your tank still holding the fuel and the engine not yet turned over, nearly every job takes only a drain, so keep your engine off. That result is determined in the minutes straight after filling up, rather than by the amount that got in. Throughout Summersdale and the remainder of West Sussex, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Phone before anything else begins, and you'll hear what follows after that.
Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel
- Don't start it — and do not trust it when it starts. Here is the bit people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine given diesel normally just cannot run, and so the driver stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel fed petrol normally starts, idles and drives away perfectly well for a few miles. It's not okay. It's wearing the fuel system while you drive.
- Two things, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only does the one. That is why the ignition is left off too — turn it on and you frequently prime the system, and that is petrol leaving your tank for just those parts.
- That advice supposes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It does not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a bigger tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
- Stay still if it is sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on The Drive, anywhere — an odd location for us beats a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to sort than a motor that never moved.
- Our van showing up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode that starts PO19 5, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Have both prepared before you ring.
- Three replies determine the full job: the stuff you poured in, the ballpark measure of it, plus whether anything has been turning since. The number is 0333 366 0103.
Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Passat, sitting at Chichester since this morning? The wait has cost you nothing — fuel in a tank is harmless. It was the run in that pushed diluted diesel through the pump. Ring us before you move the car.
Your diesel Audi A4 will have seemed completely ordinary on the way back from Lavant Primary School. They always do, and that is the catch with petrol in a diesel and not the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol vehicle and it generally won't run, and so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, ticks over and moves off as though nothing has happened — meanwhile the high-pressure fuel pump keeps working without the lubrication the fuel is meant to be giving. Nothing alerts you, because from behind the wheel there is nothing to warn you about. Phone with approximately how far you drove and how hard you worked it; the second one matters more than the first.
Risk the journey home from The Earl of March? Not a chance. It will fire up and it will drive off perfectly well, which is the issue — a diesel on a weakened tank runs typically while grinding the components your fuel should be protecting. Park the BMW 5 Series and phone us.
Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left by Roussillon Park Community Hall. For a diesel Mercedes A-Class whose engine has turned, that is about the best version there is. Phone us, then let it stand with your ignition alone. Short assists, genuinely — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why the fuel lines get cleaned and not just your tank drained.
No dashboard light exists for this, which is why vehicles in that position generally get driven a second time before anyone rings. Please don't be one of them. The throttle went limp and your idle turned ragged after a few streets, and the diesel Vauxhall Insignia is now resting close to Graylingwell Chapel Community Centre. Sluggishness there means fuel that can't build pressure correctly rather than a motor failing. Turn off. Phone us.
At a forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel
Pumps are where the work mostly kicks off, and where a large share of that finishes. If you're still on the forecourt at Texaco, that's usually where the drain happens — we operate on garage forecourts regularly, with the station's agreement.
At a forecourt, the mistake gets spotted with your motor never run, and no place else does it. Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and our engineers can still sort it out where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need cleaning as well as the tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for your key.
Out from the pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you move the car. Very much worth doing. Rolling the car four spaces doesn't justify firing the engine.
Will we cover your side of Summersdale?
East Lavant, Mid Lavant, West Lavant, Westhampnett, Chichester — each of them on the rounds that bring us over to Summersdale too, a residential suburb.
If yours is not on that list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are separate pages for nearly all towns across West Sussex, and the ones named above are merely the nearest neighbours. Near the boundary, or somewhere your phone gets wrong? Call us and enquire rather than assuming.
The area this page spans appears on the map. We operate at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and your vehicle doesn't need to move to us.
Stuck on the kerbside in Summersdale
Not everybody gets a safe place to pull in. Set off, then twigged? Ended up on the verge beside Graffham Close, or parked in some lay-by with the hazards on? That's a common call here. Not a rare one.
Stay beside the motor while it's sensible to wait in it, yet out of the car if it isn't. Do not start it up to reach a better location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mixture deeper into your fuel system. Pressing on causes the vehicle far more harm than a van driving out to an inconvenient spot, and that is no problem for us.
Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?
under 15 miles out of Summersdale, the Waterlooville Bypass is what matters here. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle turns lumpy, and there may be some smoke.
Take the first junction that's sensible, stop there, and don't restart the car to reposition. It changes what we bring, so mention it when you phone: on a longer trip — anything near the under 3 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors.

What comes next when we get to you around Summersdale
- Three things get asked before any price — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
- Out goes the tainted mixture.
- Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later on isn't the thing that created the trouble.
- Our technicians put fresh diesel in and prime the system.
- It's started with fresh diesel in it, and we make sure that it is running properly.
At that point it is ready to set off. Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been noticed soon, and since all of it is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.
Summersdale AdBlue removal is a separate job
AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the motor stays off — whereas the issue underneath it is a distinct one altogether. Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and removes the lubrication the fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.
Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Summersdale page. Both are ours to handle.
What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in Summersdale
We can't put one figure on this page honestly, since this job isn't one job. What moves it:
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
- AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.
- Whether our van can safely get to your vehicle and work on it, which depends on where the car is.
A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and is not urgent, works too.
Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in Summersdale
I am on a forecourt around Summersdale. Can you drain it here?
Yes, and it's where a big share of this work gets done. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the owner's agreement our technicians visit Sainsbury's and the other forecourts around town all the time.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
It rests on the ratio rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is if that blend has been sucked through the system.
I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?
Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. It is fixable much more commonly than people expect, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all. Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.
Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different issue and it does not replace what petrol has diluted. The tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to cope with it.
Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?
Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.
You, and the car, still together?
Turned off is how the car stays.
If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere safe, switch it off and leave it off. This is recoverable from much more frequently than people fear, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
Across West Sussex and around Summersdale: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
