Petrol in Diesel

Sun Hill: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on the engine as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car needs while the petrol is still in your tank and your engine has not been started, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the vehicle wherever it has stopped in Sun Hill or the remainder of Greater Manchester, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there. Phone and our team shall tell you what follows after that before you do anything else.

Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

  • Don't start the vehicle. Started anyway? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol car normally can't run, so the driver stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away happily, for a few miles. Motorists get that confused. It isn't all right — the fuel system is wearing every mile you drive.
  • Leave the ignition be as well. Diesel performs two roles: it ignites, and before it combusts it lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Turning the ignition on is usually enough to prime that system, which draws that petrol out of your tank then into precisely those parts.
  • Don't tip diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage as that guidance assumes, and topping up removes nothing — it merely leaves you a bigger tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that has never moved is the simplest one to handle, and we'd much rather come to a difficult place than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Hibbert Street, put those hazards on and keep the vehicle there.
  • Keep your position ready before you dial. A postcode that starts OL4 3 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van arriving and our van circling.
  • Three facts shape your whole job: the fuel you put in, the ballpark amount of it, and whether it has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

How many miles you went is what our engineers ask about, not how long the car has been stood — and here's why. Diesel performs two jobs on its way through the engine: it combusts, and before burning it greases that high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first only. So a rushed fill-up on the trip in, the realisation coming around eleven, and a diesel Renault Megane sitting at Mossley (Manchester) since quarter past eight shows those couple of miles were driven with your pump labouring on a fluid drained of most of its protection. Phone and keep it just where it is.

Hazards on. Motor off. Call us. It is twenty to nine at the gates of Hey-with-Zion Primary School, you are late, and the till receipt says unleaded — and although three miles in your Nissan Qashqai feels like nothing, fuel gets metered on demand, and a hurried dash needs plenty of it.

Here is the full mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the close gaps it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which explains the usual Lees Park call — a diesel Mercedes C-Class, out there without fuss and back down on power, lumpy at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; thinned, it escapes past those tolerances rather than building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than your engine was engineered around. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

Leave the Peugeot 3008 near Saint John the Baptist Church Hall and phone us. We're direct about not driving on since a wearing pump loses, and what it loses passes onward with the fuel to the fuel injectors beyond it.

By this point your tank isn't where most of the damage is. Once a diesel has run, that mixture is in your filter, your lines, the pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with that tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Astra that made it near Springhead Community Centre needs the circuit flushed, not drained.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Sun Hill

At a forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

Forecourts are where this work usually starts, and where a large portion of that finishes. We operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the station's agreement, so if you're still at Gulf that's normally where this drain gets done.

Before the motor has run — a garage is the only place it is stopped. The few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the key determine how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter need flushing as well as that tank. It's not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where the vehicle sits.

The staff will usually help you wheel the vehicle clear of the pump so the next motorist can get past. That is worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a start.

Do our technicians serve your side of Sun Hill?

As a residential suburb, Sun Hill sees a regular call, and the areas round about go along on that same journey: Taylor Green and Hey, Cross Bank and Greenacres Fold, Waterhead.

If yours isn't on the list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of places in Greater Manchester, and the ones named above are merely the nearest neighbours. Call us and enquire instead of presuming, particularly when you're on the boundary or somewhere the satnav misreads.

See our map for the ground covered here. The lot is ground our technicians work: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't move your car anywhere.

Sun Hill: broken down wherever you parked

Not everybody gets a chance to stop anywhere sensible. A normal call for us and not a rare one: noticed after setting off, ended up along the verge on Sunfield Way or in a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Whether you sit beside the motor or move clear of it turns on if being nearby looks wise. Never fire it up to reach a safer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mix deeper into the system. We'll take our van to a tricky place without any trouble, and for the vehicle that is much better than pressing on.

Driven it already? Pull in, then read below

This is where the A627(M) comes in — under 5 miles away from Sun Hill. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

Don't start it to reposition. Pull off at the first safe exit then turn off. Presume the worst of that on a long run. Anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you ring. What our engineers bring changes.

A bit about Sun Hill

Sun Hill is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated on the riverside with a mix of terraced housing and other residential properties. Sun Hill sits at an elevation of 198 metres, approximately 8.5 miles from Manchester city centre. Sun Hill is close to nearby places such as Taylor Green, Hey, and Cross Bank, and is part of the larger Manchester urban area. Sun Hill has a population of around 6935 people, with a high proportion of terraced houses.

When our engineers arrive with you in Sun Hill: what we do

  • Three things get established before any price — the fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • Away goes the contaminated mixture.
  • Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever remains afterwards is not the thing that started the trouble.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.
  • When it is fired up, we confirm it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away. There's no need for a garage at any stage, since the work is all done where the car is, and when it's noticed quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

AdBlue in a diesel tank around Sun Hill is a separate problem

Never crank it: that first step stands whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this fault itself. Petrol thins the diesel and removes the lubrication your fuel system relies on. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

AdBlue removal in Sun Hill has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's often the more serious of the two. Our technicians handle both.

Sun Hill pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Truthfully, no single price belongs on a page like this. This job differs. Here is what varies it:

  • Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the big one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much the tank can hold.
  • The type of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there safely?

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and if it has run. For your car at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.

Sun Hill motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

At a petrol station in Sun Hill, can you do a fuel drain there?

A good portion of this work takes place there, so yes. Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Shell is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there is possible.

A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It hinges on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether the motor has run. What determines how much work is required is whether that blend has been sucked through the system — because even though five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop. It is salvageable a lot more frequently than people assume, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a different issue from a bygone era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores. The pump still has to put up with it, as your tank still has petrol in it later.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There's no need to take it to a main dealer, as our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is.

Is the car still with you?

Keep the engine shut off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, stop somewhere sensible, switch it off then leave it off. This is recoverable from far more commonly than motorists assume, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
