Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Swalwell? Don't Start It
Don't start the engine. While the fuel is still sitting in your tank and your engine has not yet run, a fuel drain is nearly always all it needs — and that's settled in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, throughout Swalwell and the rest of Tyne and Wear, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway. Ring us so our engineers can show you what follows from here before you do much else.
What to do now about petrol in a diesel
- As you drive, the pump and your injectors wear down. That is why you do not crank it, and why you do not believe it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel in particular — the bit most people get wrong — is that it drives away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor normally cannot run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you drive on.
- Leave the car's ignition alone also. Diesel has two roles: it combusts, and before it ignites it lubricates your high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Flicking your ignition on is usually all it takes to prime your system, which carries that petrol out of that tank and into exactly those components.
- Don't put diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage in the way that guidance implies, and topping up removes nothing — it merely leaves you a fuller tank of the same blend. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
- Our team would rather travel to a tricky spot than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is quicker to sort out than a motor that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Brinkburn Avenue, that means hazards on and leave the car.
- Before you call, work out your position. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts NE16 3 — that's what settles whether our van arrives or circles.
- Call 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three points — what was put in, roughly how many litres, plus if the car has been turned over. Those answers decide all that comes after.
Don't drive it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has passed through that injection pump in real quantity on the drive in, and the drive back would close to double that for nothing at all. Ring us — the platform is fine. There is no need to stand over the Volkswagen Golf outside Metrocentre while the work happens, and we would much rather speak to you tonight than find out on Monday.
Petrol in the BMW 3 Series, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you at Lidl, somewhere around Swalwell? Then ring us, and leave the motor out of that — not even to get out of the space. Someone comes out to you. Tank cleared, fuel lines purged, clean diesel in, and home you go. Easy throttle over a mile draws very little, so these tend to be the easy jobs.
Here is what a job in the car park by The Highlander usually looks like. Our engineers reach your car, ask what went in, about how much, and whether the motor has run since — those three replies decide much of the work. Then the polluted blend comes out of that tank, the fuel lines get rinsed, and the fuel filter comes off where your Nissan Qashqai has a serviceable one. Fresh diesel goes in and the fuel system is primed. Then we start the engine, make sure it runs correctly, and you pull away.
Your pump waits ahead of the fuel injectors, and so whatever a wearing one loses passes on with the fuel — which is why we're blunt about not driving on. Phone us, then leave your diesel Mercedes C-Class where it's near Swalwell Community Centre.
No dashboard light exists for this, which is why motors in that position usually get driven once more before anyone rings. Do not be one of them. The throttle went dead and your idle turned ragged after a couple of streets, and the diesel Audi A6 is now waiting close to Swalwell War Memorial. Sluggishness there means fuel that cannot build pressure correctly instead of a motor giving up. Turn off. Phone us.
On a forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel
Plenty of this job begins at a forecourt, which means a large portion of that is done there. Still at BP? Then that is generally where it happens. Garage forecourts are normal for us, with the permission of the station.
Nowhere other than a forecourt can it be halted with the engine still unrun. The few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the keys decide how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter require cleaning as well as the tank. It's not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where your car stands.
Attendants will generally pitch in pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Take the help. Four car lengths is not worth a start.
Do we cover your corner of Swalwell?
As a residential suburb, Swalwell gets a frequent call, while the areas close by come along on that same trip: Whickham and Derwent Haugh, Beechgrove and Axwell Park, Paradise.
We still come. The names above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of towns around Tyne and Wear, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Near the boundary, or anywhere your satnav can't find? Ring us and enquire rather than guessing.
This map is the patch the page spans. The vehicle doesn't need to travel to us. Our technicians work throughout the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Swalwell: stuck where you pulled up
Not everyone has the chance to pull in anywhere safe. Set off, then twigged? Landed by the verge beside Axwell Terrace, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That is a common call here. Not an odd one.
Whether you sit beside the car or stand clear of it rests on if staying in it seems safe. Don't start it up to get to a better location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the blend deeper into the system. However inconvenient the location, it is no trouble for us to get to it, and that is much better for the vehicle than carrying on.
A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?
under 5 miles from Swalwell, the Central Motorway East is what counts now. A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they arrive are typically a loss of power, a rough idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.
The next safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. Assume the worst of it on a long drive. Anything close to the under 5 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Say so when you call. What our engineers bring alters.

Our call-out in Swalwell, step by step
- The answers shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what got in, how much of that, and whether your engine has run.
- Our engineers empty that tank of all the polluted mixture.
- What is left in your system shouldn't be what started the trouble, and so the fuel lines get cleaned and your filter cleared.
- Your system gets primed, on new diesel.
- It is started with new diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it's running smoothly.
The car is then ready for you to drive away. Our technicians do everything wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught quickly, it's very rare for there to be lasting damage.
AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Swalwell?
The problem isn't the same, though the first instruction is — don't crank it — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. Petrol weakens the diesel and removes the protection the fuel system depends on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and deposits in its place.
Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Swalwell page. Both are ours to handle.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Swalwell?
What changes the figure is set out below, as this job isn't one job and we cannot truthfully put a single price on this page.
- Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the main one.
- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that ratio.
- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.
- Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there sensibly?
The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear rather than as a range. Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.
Petrol in diesel queries from Swalwell motorists
I'm on a forecourt in Swalwell. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?
Yes — forecourts are where a big part of this happens. Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you will hear whether working there is possible.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mixture drawn through it.
I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?
Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. It is recoverable much more often than motorists assume, even though driving is what shifts the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
A drain and flush carried out correctly is not a modification and does not void a manufacturer's warranty. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.
Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?
What petrol has thinned isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a different fault. So no. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.
A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?
There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, because our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.
Still with your car?
The motor stays off.
If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere safe, switch it off then leave it off. Cold and parked, a car is in the best position available — and people fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
