Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Swindon? Don't Start It
With that tank still holding the petrol and the motor not yet run, almost every job needs only a drain, so leave the engine off. That outcome is determined in the minutes straight after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that got in. All over Swindon and the remainder of Gloucestershire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt. Contact us and our engineers will show you what follows from here before you try anything else.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try next
- Do not fire it up — and don't trust it if it starts. That is the thing most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor filled with diesel usually just won't run, so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, ticks over and moves off quite happily for several miles. It isn't fine. It is wearing out the fuel system as you drive.
- Leave your ignition be too. Diesel does two tasks: it combusts, and before it burns it protects your injection pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is often sufficient to prime your system, which draws this petrol out of that tank and into precisely those parts.
- Do not weaken it. Diesel tipped on top clears nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The octane makes no difference.
- A motor that hasn't shifted is the easiest one to deal with, and so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Quat Goose Lane? Hazards on, then leave the car there. A difficult location suits us better than a started diesel.
- Keep your whereabouts prepared before you ring. A postcode that starts GL51 9 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between our van arriving and a van circling.
- Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what got in, approximately how many litres, and if your car has been run. The answers determine everything that happens next.
Can petrol be pumped from your diesel at a forecourt?
Forecourts are where the job mostly starts, and where a large part of it finishes. We operate on station forecourts all the time, with the owner's permission, so if you're still at Sainsbury's that is normally where the drain happens.
Before your engine has started — a garage is the only setting it gets spotted. Fuel sucked out of your tank and through the filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the motor is fired up and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and your lines as well as your tank. That is still not a disaster, and we put it right where the vehicle stands. What determines it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.
Out from the petrol pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you push the car. Well worth it. Moving the car four spaces does not merit starting it.
Swindon and the areas next to it
Being a village, Swindon sees a routine visit, and its neighbours round about come along on the same round: Wymans Brook and Kingsditch, Brockhampton and St Peters, Marle Hill.
If yours isn't on this list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are pages for most places around Gloucestershire, and the ones listed above are simply the closest neighbours. Ring us and check instead of guessing — borders above all, and anywhere a satnav might misread.
The map is the patch this page includes. Your car doesn't need to come to us. Our technicians work over all of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.
Swindon: broken down wherever you pulled up
Not everybody gets the chance to pull in anywhere safe. A routine call for us rather than an odd one: realised after setting off, landed by the verge on Rivelands Road or in a lay-by with your hazards going.
Fine right there? Remain with it. Not okay? Climb out and clear of it. Don't start up the motor to nurse the vehicle somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that mixture further into the system. Pressing on causes the vehicle far more harm than our van coming out to a tricky location, and that is no trouble for us.
Don't chance it. The trip home from The Ridge is perfectly possible, which is exactly the issue — a weakened tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears the parts the fuel is meant to protect. Phone, then let the Nissan Qashqai stay where it stands.
Injection pressure is the thing being lost. Petrol weakens diesel, and thinner fuel slips past the close-fitting parts that are supposed to build that pressure, and so the further a diesel Audi A4 went, the less well it held. Fine on the way out and gutless on the way back is how the trip to Swindon Village Playing Field went, then, and your tank is the place to look. Pull in somewhere safe, switch off then phone us.
Off the forecourt, receipt read, a few hundred yards, parked near Swindon Village Hall. For a diesel Ford Focus whose engine has turned, that is about the best version there is. Ring us, and let the car stand with your ignition alone. Short helps, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the fuel filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why your lines get rinsed and not just that tank cleared.
Unfamiliar places are where this happens most, and the reason is mechanical rather than careless: the narrower petrol nozzle slides into a modern diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all. Fuelled up near Seasons Business and Leisure Complex without thinking, in a diesel Mercedes E-Class you have had for two days? Phone us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars tend to get driven further before anyone realises, and distance is what decides how much petrol ends up at your injectors.
Drain it then put new diesel in — that is the suggestion you will get, normally from a person confident, and it is only half right. Do precisely that to a diesel BMW 1 Series close to St Lawrence Church and it would start, which is what makes the suggestion sound plausible. What happens next is the issue: the motor immediately sucks the petrol still sitting in the fuel filter and the feed lines straight back through the pump, because emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead. Our technicians flush the system and take the filter off where the car has a working one, which is the difference between the car being put right and the vehicle simply starting.
A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?
under 3 miles from Swindon, the M5 is what matters here. Lost power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, instead of a neat stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.
Don't restart it to reposition. Pull off at the next sensible junction then turn off. Long drive? Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the phone, because it alters what goes in our van.
Where is Swindon?
Swindon is a small village in Gloucestershire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 42 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Swindon lies near the city of Gloucester, approximately 7.7 miles away, and is also close to nearby places such as Wymans Brook, Kingsditch, and Brockhampton. Swindon has a population of around 832 residents and is located in the South West region of England, about 88.9 miles from London.
When our technicians arrive with you in Swindon: what we do
- We ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those responses change what the work really is.
- The tainted fuel comes from your tank.
- What is left in your system shouldn't be what caused the problem, and so your fuel lines get flushed and your filter cleared.
- The fuel system gets primed, on clean diesel.
- We turn it on and confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.
Your car is then ready for you to drive away. Everything is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught early, lasting damage is very rare.
AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Swindon?
Never crank it: that opening rule holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the fault itself. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it brings corrosion and residue instead.
Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Swindon page. Both are ours to handle.
Swindon pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain
One number wouldn't be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that change it:
- Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.
- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much your tank takes.
- Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.
- Whether a van can sensibly reach your car and work on it, which hinges on where the vehicle is.
The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear and not as a range. If it isn't urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — works too.
Petrol in diesel: common questions in Swindon
Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Swindon?
Yes, and it is where a good share of this work takes place. Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you if we can work there. With the owner's consent we work at EG On the Move and the other forecourts nearby routinely.
How much petrol in a diesel is too much?
Ratio settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that mixture sucked through it.
Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?
Pull in somewhere safe, switch off, and leave the car off. It's salvageable much more often than people assume, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.
Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?
A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all. Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.
Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?
No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct problem and it doesn't put back what petrol has thinned. Later on? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
No. Our engineers drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.
Still with your car?
Shut off is the way the car remains.
Turn it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Drivers fear this a lot more than they need to.
