Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Swynnerton?

Never turn on the motor. While the petrol is still inside your tank and the engine has not yet been started, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires — and that is settled in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, across Swynnerton and the remainder of Staffordshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive. We can show you what the following step is. Phone — that comes ahead of anything else.

What to do first about petrol in a diesel

  • While you drive, your pump and your injectors suffer. That's why you don't fire it up, and why you do not rely on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel in particular — the part most people get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor usually won't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the harm with them. This one lets you drive on.
  • Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. That is why your ignition stays off too — switch it on and you commonly prime that system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for precisely those components.
  • That advice assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It does not. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A car that has never shifted is the quickest one to sort out, and we would much rather get to a tricky spot than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Main Street, put your hazards on then leave the vehicle there.
  • Our van arriving rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode beginning ST15 0, and whatever is closest to you with a label on it. Get both ready before you call.
  • What was put in, about how many litres, and also whether the engine has fired — the three replies settle your whole call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Quarter past eight, a fast fill-up on the drive in, and it dawns on you around eleven — by which time your diesel Renault Megane has been sitting outside Barlaston for three hours. Phone us and keep the car right where it stands. The run in is the part that counts here, because diesel has two jobs on its way through a motor: it ignites, and before it burns it greases that high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were travelled with the pump labouring on a liquid that had lost a great deal of the protection it is designed around — which is why the question we ask is how far you travelled, not how long the vehicle has been standing.

We'll come to you, empty that tank, flush those fuel lines and put fresh diesel in so you can get home. So if petrol went into your diesel Volkswagen Passat in Swynnerton and you're sat at One Stop with a boot packed with shopping, phone us — and don't crank it again to exit the spot. A mile or so at gentle throttle uses little of it, which is why these are usually the easy cases.

How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, and so have both ready. Your Skoda Octavia will have felt perfectly usual on the way back from All Saints CofE (C) First School — they all do, and that is the snag. Diesel into a petrol motor generally will not run at all: the person stops, and so does the harm. Petrol into a diesel fires up, idles, drives off like nothing happened, while the high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication your fuel should be giving it. No warning appears, since behind the wheel nothing appears wrong.

Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol weakens diesel, and thinner fuel seeps past the tightly fitted parts that are meant to build that pressure, and so the farther a diesel Audi A4 went, the less well it held. Normal on the way out and gutless on the way back is how the trip to Stabhill Plantation went, then, and your tank is where to look. Pull in somewhere safe, switch off and phone us.

Leave the Ford Focus near Swynnerton Village Hall then phone us. We are firm about not driving on as a worn pump loses, and what it sheds passes onward with your fuel to the injectors downstream.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Swynnerton

Can petrol be drained from your diesel at the forecourt?

Pumps are where this work usually starts, and where a large portion of it closes. The drain usually happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the station's agreement, that's a place our technicians work, and often.

Before the motor has fired — a forecourt is the single setting the mistake ends up stopped. The few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the key settle how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the lines and your filter need cleaning as well as that tank. It's not a disaster, and our engineers can still deal with it where the vehicle is.

Push the car out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they normally will. The next motorist gets past the petrol pump, and that is worth doing. Rolling it four bays does not merit firing the motor.

Swynnerton and the areas next to it

Sandyford, Cotes, Beech, Cotes Heath, Cranberry — each of these on the rounds that bring us over to Swynnerton as well, a rural village.

Not on the list? It tells you nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and nearly all towns around Staffordshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Phone and check rather than guessing, especially where you're on the boundary or somewhere your phone misreads.

The map is the ground the page covers. The vehicle does not need to come to us. We work across all of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Stranded at the roadside anywhere in Swynnerton?

Not everyone gets a chance to stop anywhere suitable. Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Tittensor Road because you worked it out after setting off — our technicians take that call so often that it is the ordinary kind.

Whether you sit with the vehicle or stand clear of it turns on if being in it feels safe. Don't restart it to reach a safer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that blend deeper into your fuel system. Pressing on does your car far more harm than a technician driving out to an inconvenient place, and that's no problem for us.

Run it already? Stop, and check below

Here is where the M6 matters, under a mile from Swynnerton. A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they come are usually a loss of power, a lumpy idle and some smoke instead of a tidy stop.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. It affects what our technicians bring, so say so when you phone: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors.

Where is Swynnerton?

Swynnerton is a small village in Staffordshire, situated inland at an elevation of 182 metres, approximately 7.4 miles from Stoke-on-Trent. Swynnerton has a population of around 547 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Swynnerton is close to nearby places such as Sandyford, Cotes, and Beech, and is about 131.8 miles from London.

Our call-out in Swynnerton, step by step

  • Our engineers ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies shape what the work really is.
  • Our engineers drain that tank of the polluted fuel.
  • Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later on is not the thing that caused the trouble.
  • The fuel system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • It's run with clean diesel in it, and our engineers check that it is running properly.

That leaves your car ready to drive away. All of it is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Swynnerton AdBlue removal is a different problem

Never start it: that first rule holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the problem itself. Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that depends on it. That's petrol. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and residue.

Both are ours. There is a separate Swynnerton page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Swynnerton prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Truthfully, no single figure fits on a page like this. The job differs. Here is what changes it:

  • Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there's safe for a technician.

Tell us your car, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer rather than a range. If it is not time-critical — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in Swynnerton

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Swynnerton?

A good part of this work happens there, so yes. Routinely, provided the site consents: Morrisons, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that location is something our technicians answer there and then.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether your motor has run matters much more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. What settles how much work is needed is if that blend has been sucked through the system — since even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Driving moves the problem along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really valuable thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out properly, emptying and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave it switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct fault and it doesn't replace what petrol has weakened. That tank still has petrol in it later, and the pump still has to put up with it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. The car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

You, and the car, still together?

Switched off is the way the car remains.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car later on. This is recoverable from much more regularly than people fear, and a parked, cold motor is the best position to be in.
