Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Sydney?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Sydney and the rest of Cheshire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. While the motor has not yet been started and the fuel is still inside your tank, a tank drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much was put in. A single ring to us will be plenty: our technicians can tell you what follows from here. Try this right away.

What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Don't fire it up. Turned on anyway? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol car typically won't run, and so the motorist stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It moves off fine, for several miles. Drivers get that backwards. It isn't okay — that fuel system is wearing every mile you do.
  • Leave your ignition off as well. Diesel has two jobs: it combusts, and before it burns it greases the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Switching your ignition on is often all it takes to prime your system, which carries this petrol out of your tank then into just those components.
  • Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance suggests — so do not put diesel on top to water down it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Remain where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that has not moved is the easiest one to deal with, and we'd much rather travel to a tricky spot than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Herbert Street, put the hazards on and leave it there.
  • Keep your position prepared before you call. A postcode beginning CW1 5 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between our van arriving and the van circling.
  • What went in, about how many litres, plus if the motor has fired — these three details decide the full visit. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Tonight, please, not Monday. Taking it home is the one thing not to do: a commute has forced real volume through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of that, and the return trip would about double the figure to no end. The Volkswagen Passat can sit outside Crewe perfectly well. Call from the platform if easier; standing over us while we work isn't necessary.

It will start. It will drive off just fine. That's the trouble, as a diesel on a weakened tank runs normally while wearing down the components its fuel should be protecting. So no, do not try the journey home from Sydney Arms — leave the Mercedes C-Class and phone us.

Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the precision parts it flows through, and petrol weakens it. That's the whole process, and it accounts for the normal Macon Meadows call: a diesel Audi A6 that travelled out there without fuss and came back down on power, uneven at idle, perhaps smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs the fuel to hold pressure, not just to burn — so when the fuel dilutes, pressure that should build and stay built starts escaping past gaps instead, and the motor gets a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was designed around. None of that is your engine failing, which is the part worth hearing: it's the fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is corrected.

The pump waits upstream of your injectors, and so whatever a worn one sheds passes onward with your fuel — which is why we're blunt about not driving on. Ring us, and leave your diesel Kia Sportage where it is near St Peter.

That softness is the fuel failing to build pressure properly, not the motor packing up — and with no warning for it, motors in that position usually get driven again before somebody calls. Please don't. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone limp, idle turned ragged, and a diesel Peugeot 2008 now waiting close to Saint Michael and All Angels. Turn it off then call us.

Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

A large part of this job ends up finished at a forecourt, since that's where it usually starts. We operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the site's consent, so if you are still at Shell that is normally where the drain gets done.

Before your engine has fired — a garage is the only place it is spotted. Fuel pulled out of that tank and through the filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the engine is started and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers your filter and your lines along with the tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and we put it right where your car is. What settles it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Out from the petrol pump, the next customer can get past — so yes, let the staff help you roll the vehicle. Worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth the risk.

Areas our team serve around Sydney

Sydney is a residential suburb, so our technicians get out to it and to the places near it on the usual trips: Crewe Green, Maw Green, Crewe, Slaughter Hill and Haslington.

Our engineers still come. Those places above are only the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for most places around Cheshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage. Near a boundary, or anywhere the satnav struggles with? Phone and check rather than guessing.

The area this page includes appears on this map. Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of that is territory our technicians serve, and none of that requires your vehicle to come to us.

Roadside call-outs across Sydney

Not everybody finds a sensible place to pull in. If you noticed after setting off and landed on the verge of Sydney Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards going, that's a common call for us instead of an odd one.

Wait beside the vehicle if it's sensible to be inside, but out of the car if it's not. Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that mixture further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer. Carrying on causes the vehicle far more harm than a technician coming out to a tricky spot, and that's no bother for us.

Driven it already? Stop, and see below

under 5 miles out of Sydney, your M6 is what counts now. It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Misfuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Do not restart it to reposition. Get off at the first sensible exit then switch off. It affects what our engineers bring, and so tell us when you call: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

All about Sydney

Sydney is a suburban area in Cheshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 52 metres. Sydney lies near the city of Stoke-on-Trent, approximately 11.7 miles away, and is close to nearby places such as Crewe Green and Maw Green. Sydney has a population of around 4342 people and predominantly consists of semi-detached housing. Sydney is located in the North West region of England, about 146.7 miles from London.

What follows when our engineers arrive with you around Sydney

  • Three things get checked before any quote — the fuel that got in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.
  • The contaminated fuel comes out of your tank.
  • What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what started the issue, and so your fuel lines get rinsed and your filter cleared.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.
  • It's started with new diesel in it, and we make sure that it's running properly.

After that it is ready to set off. There is no need for a workshop at any stage, because the work is all done where the car is, and when it is noticed early, lasting damage is very uncommon.

A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Sydney

Don't start it: that opening rule holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this problem itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the protection the system relies on. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

AdBlue removal in Sydney has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's often the more significant of the two. Our technicians deal with both.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Sydney?

Truthfully, no single price belongs on a page like this. The job changes. Here's what moves it:

  • This is the main one: whether the motor has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much that tank takes.
  • Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's safe for our van.

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run. If it's not urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

Sydney drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Fuel drains on a Sydney petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a big part of this work happens. Our engineers work at Tesco and the other forecourts locally all the time, with the site's consent — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is if that blend has been pulled through your fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off. It is salvageable far more frequently than drivers assume, even though driving is what shifts the problem from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no modification at all. An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Wherever your car is, we drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

Standing next to it?

Do not turn it back on.

Switch it off somewhere safe then leave it off, if you have already driven it. Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best place available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
