Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Tadley Bottom? Don't Start It

If you have not fired up the engine yet, don't. A drain and nothing else is almost always what a car needs while the petrol is still sitting in your tank and the engine has not run, which is why it's the following few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has stopped in Tadley Bottom or the remainder of Hampshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there. Phone before everything else happens, so you'll see what comes next.

The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will typically not run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for a few miles. Motorists have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not fire it up. And once started, never trust it: the fuel system is wearing down while you drive.
  • Leave your ignition off as well. Diesel has two tasks: it burns, and before it combusts it lubricates your high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Flicking the car's ignition on is commonly all it takes to prime that system, which carries that petrol out of your tank and into just those components.
  • Don't thin it. Diesel put on top clears nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.
  • Our team would sooner drive to a difficult location than have it started — so if you safely can, stay put. Nothing is simpler to handle than a vehicle that has not shifted. On the verge on Rowan Road, that means hazards on then keep the car.
  • Before you dial, have your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting RG26 3 — that is what decides whether the van shows up or circles.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, about how much, plus whether the engine has started. These three details shape your whole call-out.

Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

It begins at the pump, mostly. Regularly the job wraps up on site as well. Our technicians work on station forecourts all the time, with the owner's agreement, so if you're still at Esso that is normally where the drain takes place.

A filling station is the one place the mistake can be halted before the engine has run. Our technicians can still sort it out where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure pump, right from that tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to go past that tank to the lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the key are what settle that.

Move the car out of the way if the staff offer, and they normally will. The next customer gets by the pump, and that is worth doing. Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a restart.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Tadley Bottom

We're in car parks like the one outside Sainsbury's a lot, and it is rarely the fuel that complicates them. It's the bay. Vehicles both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Sometimes a height barrier at the entrance, which settles if our van gets to you at all. So tell us how boxed in you are when you call, and which way the car is facing. If there is no room to work beside the Volkswagen Passat, our engineers shift it without the motor. That is not fussiness over a handful of seconds: starts prime things, fuel comes out of your tank toward the pump, and a motor moved twice for a roomier bay is quietly a bigger job than one no one touched.

A diesel Peugeot 308 sitting in the car park at The New Inn with a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job, right up until someone takes it home. Leave it there overnight then ring us in the morning. Nothing degrades whilst it stands. What we'll ask about is if that drive there was short and cold, as that's where petrol is least likely to burn properly — and whatever does not burn can work past the piston rings and into the oil.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left near War Memorial. For a diesel Audi A3 whose engine has turned, that is about the best version there is. Call us, and let the car stand with your ignition alone. Short helps, genuinely — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and your filter has had diluted fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why the lines get flushed and not just your tank drained.

Turn off where you have stopped, and do not restart it to find somewhere better — near Salvation Army Church Tadley or anywhere at all. Knocking, a lumpy idle, white smoke and a limp throttle are a misfilled diesel Vauxhall Astra telling you what's wrong.

Drain it and put new diesel in — that is the tip you'll get, usually from somebody confident, and it's half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Citroen C3 by Pamber Heath Gospel Hall and it would start, which is what makes the suggestion sound reasonable. What occurs next is the trouble: the motor at once pulls the petrol left waiting in your filter and the feed lines straight back through the pump, since emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead. Our engineers flush the system and take your filter off where the vehicle has a serviceable one, which is the difference between the vehicle being put right and your car only starting.

Tadley Bottom and the towns next to it

Being a residential suburb, Tadley Bottom sees a regular call, while its neighbours close by go along on that same run: Tadley Hill and Pamber Heath, Tadley and Pamber Green, Court Corner.

Not on this list? That means nothing. The places above are just the nearest few, and nearly all locations around Hampshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site. Guessing is the mistake to skip, above all on the border or somewhere the satnav struggles. Ring us and ask.

That map shows the patch the page includes. The vehicle does not need to move to us. We operate throughout the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Broken down by the kerbside around Tadley Bottom

The chance to pull over anywhere sensible doesn't come to everybody. Set off, then noticed? Ended up on the verge on Spiers Close, or sat in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That is a common call here. Not a rare one.

Okay where you are? Stay by it. Not safe? Climb out and clear of it. It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the catch: restart the vehicle to reach somewhere handier and the mix goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled. However tricky the place, it's no problem for us to come to it, and that's far better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Run it already? Pull over, then read this

under 10 miles from Tadley Bottom, your M3 is what matters now. Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle turns lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

Come off at the next sensible exit, turn off, and never restart the vehicle to reposition. Long trip? Anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the contamination. Say that on the phone, since it alters what goes in the van.

What happens when our engineers reach you in Tadley Bottom

  • We ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those replies shape what the work really is.
  • Our technicians clear the tank of the polluted fuel.
  • Our technicians rinse your fuel lines and clear your filter, and so what is left in the system is not what created the trouble.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • After it is fired up, our engineers confirm it runs properly on clean diesel.

After that it's ready to drive away. Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been noticed soon, and as everything is done where the vehicle is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Tadley Bottom

If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first instruction is unchanged — never crank it — but the problem is not. Petrol weakens the diesel and strips the lubrication the system relies on. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Tadley Bottom page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Tadley Bottom?

One price would not be honest here, because this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • This is the main one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much the tank takes.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there safely?

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and whether the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range. Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

Petrol in diesel questions from Tadley Bottom drivers

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Tadley Bottom?

Plenty of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes. Routinely, provided the site agrees: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that place is something our technicians answer straight away.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. What settles how much work is needed is if that mix has been drawn through your fuel system — because although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off. Driving is what takes the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is recoverable a lot more often than motorists fear, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It is not a change, so a drain then flush carried out properly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has weakened isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate problem. So no. Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the vehicle is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Don't switch the engine back on.

If you have already driven the vehicle, stop somewhere safe, switch it off then leave it off. A still, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than people fear.
