Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Talywain?

With your tank still carrying the fuel and the motor not yet run, almost every job requires only a drain, so keep your engine off. That result is determined in the minutes straight after filling up, rather than by the amount that was put in. Across Talywain and the rest of Torfaen, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt. Call us before everything else starts, and you will hear what comes after that.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

  • Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for a few miles. Most people have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't start the vehicle. And if started, don't trust it: that fuel system is wearing while you drive.
  • Turning the car's ignition on commonly primes your system, and priming is what carries petrol out of that tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps oiled on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition alone.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage the way that guidance assumes — so don't add diesel on top to water down it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • We'd sooner travel to an awkward place than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is quicker to sort out than a motor that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Commercial Road, that means hazards on then leave the car.
  • A van arriving rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts NP4 7, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Keep both prepared before you phone.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three points — what was put in, roughly how many litres, plus if the car has been turned over. Those responses decide all that comes after.

Quarter past eight, a quick fill on the road in, and it dawns on you at about eleven — by that point your diesel Renault Clio has been sitting at Pontypool and New Inn for three hours. Ring us then keep it exactly where it is. The journey in is the thing that matters now, because diesel does two roles on its way through the engine: it combusts, and before it burns it greases the high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were driven with your pump running on a fluid that had shed a lot of the protection it is designed around — which is why the thing we ask is how many miles you went, not how long your car has been parked.

You'll be advised to move the car clear of that gateway and sort it out later. Don't. On the zig-zags by the local primary school, a misfuelled Ford Focus running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Start it three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime pulls more petrol through the fuel filter on to the pump. Let them moan. Call us.

Chance the trip home from The Globe Inn? Don't. It will start and it will move off quite happily, which is the issue — a diesel on a weakened tank behaves generally while wearing the parts your fuel should be lubricating. Leave the Mercedes C-Class then phone.

Why so blunt about leaving the keys alone? Because your pump is ahead of your injectors, and a worn-out one sends whatever it gives off on with your fuel. Phone us. Leave the BMW X1 by Garnsychan Partnership.

Drain it and put clean diesel in — that's the advice you will get, normally from a person sure of themselves, and it's half right. Do exactly that to a diesel Vauxhall Insignia near Garndiffaith Millennium Hall and it would start, which is what makes the suggestion sound sensible. What happens next is the issue: the engine straight away pulls the petrol left resting in the fuel filter and the feed lines straight back through your pump, since draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead. Our technicians flush your circuit and take the filter off where your vehicle has a serviceable one, which is the difference between the car being fixed and the car simply starting.

Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

The work begins at a forecourt, mostly. Regularly the job wraps up on site too. We operate on station forecourts routinely, with the owner's consent, so if you're still at Texaco that is typically where the drain happens.

At a garage, it is spotted with the motor never started, and nowhere else does it. Fuel sucked out of your tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the engine is started and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and the lines along with that tank. That is still not a calamity, and our technicians deal with it where your car stands. What determines it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

The attendants will generally help you push it away from the petrol pump so the next customer can get by. It is worth doing. Four vehicle lengths is not worth a start.

Service around Talywain

These same journeys bring us to Waterloo, Golynos, Abersychan, Victoria Village and Prospect Place besides Talywain, which is a residential suburb.

There are pages for the majority of towns in Torfaen, and the ones listed above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from this list says nothing whatsoever about if our engineers come. Ring us and enquire rather than presuming — boundaries especially, and wherever a satnav might get wrong.

See the map for the ground covered on this page. Every bit of it is ground our technicians cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't drive your vehicle anywhere.

Talywain: broken down wherever you stopped

Not everybody finds a suitable place to pull in. If you worked it out after setting off and ended up on the verge on Commercial Close, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards on, that's a routine call for us rather than an unusual one.

Wait with your car while it's sensible to wait in it, and clear of it when it is not. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the problem: start it up to get to somewhere handier and the blend goes further into the system with every mile covered. However awkward the location, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that's a lot better for your car than carrying on.

So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

This is where the local M4 comes into it — under 10 miles away from Talywain. A misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they come are generally lost power, a lumpy idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.

Get off at the next sensible exit, turn off, and don't restart it to reposition. Assume the worst of that on a long run. Anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Say so when you phone. What we bring alters.

Talywain itself

Talywain is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Torfaen, with a mix of semi-detached housing and a population of around 3196 residents. Talywain sits at an elevation of 254 metres, overlooking the surrounding landscape. Talywain is located near the communities of Waterloo, Golynos, and Abersychan, and is approximately 10 miles from the city of Newport. Talywain is also within commuting distance of major cities, with London being around 127 miles away.

The visit around Talywain, step by step

  • The responses change the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of that, and whether the engine has run.
  • The contaminated fuel is drawn out of that tank.
  • Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever remains after that is not the thing that started the issue.
  • New diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.
  • Our engineers start it and check it runs properly on new diesel.

That leaves the car ready to set off. There's no need for a workshop at any point, as the work is all done where the car is, and when it is spotted quickly, lasting damage is very rare.

Talywain AdBlue removal is a distinct job

Do not start it: that first instruction stands whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this issue itself. Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Talywain page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Talywain

What moves the price is set out below, as this job is not one job and we can't frankly put a single figure on this page.

  • This is the key one: whether your engine has been started, or driven.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much the tank can hold.
  • AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.
  • Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there safely?

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if your engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.

Petrol in diesel queries from Talywain motorists

I'm on a forecourt in Talywain. Can you drain it on the spot?

Yes, and it is where a fair share of this work gets done. We attend another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts locally regularly, with the owner's permission — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you if we can work there.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether your engine has run matters a lot more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that mix has been pulled through your fuel system.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable much more often than people assume.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, draining and rinsing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a different fault from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind puts back. After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, since our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

Still with your car?

Keep the car turned off.

Turn it off somewhere safe and leave it off, if you have already driven it. A stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more frequently than people expect.
