Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Tamworth?

Never turn on the motor. If the fuel is still in your tank and the motor has not been started, a drain is almost always all it takes — and that gets settled in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, across Tamworth and the rest of Staffordshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive. Our engineers can show you what your next move will be. Phone — it goes before everything else.

Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

  • Don't fire it up — and never trust it when it fires up. That is the bit most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine filled with diesel typically just will not run, so the driver stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol typically starts, ticks over and drives off perfectly well for a few miles. It isn't fine. It is eating into the fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the car's ignition stays off also — flick it on and you usually prime the system, and that's petrol leaving the tank for precisely those components.
  • Never tip diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system doesn't handle petrol by percentage in the way that guidance suggests, and topping up takes out nothing — it just hands you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.
  • A car that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to sort, so remain where you are if you safely can. Parked on the verge on Victoria Road? Hazards on, and leave the vehicle there. An odd location suits us better than a started engine.
  • Keep your position prepared before you dial. A postcode that starts B79 7 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between our van arriving and a van circling.
  • What got in, about how many litres, and whether your car has run — those three facts settle the entire job. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Tonight, please, not Monday. Running it home is the only thing not to do: a commute has pushed real quantity through your pump already, petrol-thinned diesel and plenty of it, and the return trip would more or less double the figure to no gain. The Volkswagen Golf can sit at the nearest station perfectly well. Call from the platform if handier; standing over us while we work isn't necessary.

Tell us this much and our technicians can work with it: a diesel BMW 3 Series, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, turned off at Lidl now. Time elapsed isn't the thing our engineers need. Fuel drawn by your pump is.

Put diesel in a petrol car and mostly it won't run, and so the driver stops there and the wear stops with them. Reverse it — petrol into a diesel — and the car starts, ticks over and drives off as though nothing had happened, while the high-pressure pump works without the protection the fuel is supposed to be supplying. That's the catch, and it's why the diesel Nissan Qashqai will have felt completely ordinary coming back from Moorgate Primary Academy. They do. From the driver's seat there's nothing to warn you about, and so nothing alerts you. Ring us with roughly how far you went, and how hard; the second one counts more than the first.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not just burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built escapes past tolerances instead, leaving your engine a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was built round. Petrol thins diesel, and diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the close-fitting parts it runs through — that is the entire mechanism. It accounts for the usual Castle Grounds call too: a diesel Ford Kuga that drove out without complaint and came back down on power, rough at idle, perhaps smoking a little. None of which is the motor failing, and that's the part worth hearing. The fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put the fuel right and it stops.

Why we're direct about not driving on: the pump rests ahead of your injectors, so whatever a worn pump loses moves downstream with your fuel. Leave the Citroen C3 by Saint Editha's Community Church Hall then phone us.

Can petrol be taken from a diesel on the forecourt?

Forecourts are where the work often begins, and where a good portion of that closes. The drain typically happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the owner's permission, that is somewhere our engineers work, and often.

No place except a garage can this be caught with the engine still unstarted. The few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for the key determine how much requires rinsing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter need cleaning as well as that tank. It is not a calamity, and we can still deal with it where your car stands.

Attendants will usually chip in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Welcome the help. Rolling it four bays does not justify cranking it.

Service around Tamworth

The same journeys bring us to Gillway, The Leys, Bitterscote, Bolehall and Kettlebrook along with Tamworth, which is a riverside town.

Not on this list? That says nothing. The places above are simply the nearest few, and the majority of towns across Staffordshire have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. Call us to check instead of presuming, especially if you're on the boundary or anywhere your phone struggles with.

Use the map for the area shown here. Your vehicle never needs to come to us. We operate over the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Tamworth: stuck where you stopped

The opportunity to pull over anywhere sensible doesn't fall to everybody. A normal call for us and not an odd one: noticed after setting off, landed by the verge of Colehill or in a lay-by with the hazards going.

Sit beside the car while it's wise to wait in it, but out of it when it's not. Do not fire up your motor to limp it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mix further into the system. A technician coming to an awkward location is no problem for us, and it is far better for your car than pressing on.

Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has gone

Here is where the M42 counts, under 3 miles from Tamworth. Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power ebbs away, your idle turns rough, and there may be some smoke.

Come off at the first sensible exit, switch off, and don't start the vehicle to move it. Long drive? Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the mixture. Say that on the call, since it alters what goes in our van.

Where is Tamworth?

Tamworth is a town situated in the West Midlands region of England, on the banks of the River Tame at an elevation of 67 metres. Tamworth lies approximately 6.6 miles from the city of Lichfield and is surrounded by nearby places such as Gillway, The Leys, and Bitterscote. Tamworth has a population of around 20687 people and is characterised by its predominant semi-detached housing stock. Tamworth is located about 102.3 miles northwest of London, making it a significant settlement in the area.

Our job in Tamworth, step by step

  • The answers alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of it, and whether your engine has run.
  • Away comes the tainted mixture.
  • We flush your fuel lines and clear the filter, so what's left in the fuel system is not what created the problem.
  • Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.
  • It's fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it's running correctly.

That leaves it ready to set off. There is no need to go to a garage at any point, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is caught soon, lasting damage is very unusual.

AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Tamworth?

Do not crank it: that first rule applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this fault itself. Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the protection the system relies on. AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and residue in its place.

Our engineers deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Tamworth has its own page with the detail — including why it's usually the more significant of the two.

Tamworth prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Frankly, no single number fits on a page like this. This job varies. Here is what changes it:

  • Whether your engine has been run or driven. This is the main one.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.
  • Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a technician can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your car is.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and whether the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range. For your car at home that's going nowhere and isn't pressing, works too.

Petrol in diesel: everyday queries around Tamworth

I am on a forecourt in Tamworth. Can you drain it on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a good share of this gets done. Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the site's consent our engineers attend Texaco and the other forecourts around town routinely.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that mix has been pulled through the fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of the tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable far more commonly than drivers expect.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It is not a modification, so a drain and flush carried out properly does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. Running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct problem and it does not restore what petrol has diluted. The tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to put up with it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

Standing next to it?

Keep the engine turned off.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off and keep it off. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.
