Tan-yr-allt: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Whatever you do, never switch your engine on, even for a moment, to shift the vehicle. Stop; leave the vehicle off. Cleared then rinsed, right where it is: that's normally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it takes. Whether it stays that straightforward rests on the minutes to come far more than on everything else. Anywhere you happen to be in Tan-yr-allt, here is how things go from here.

Petrol in a diesel, motor off — the first minute

Work through the following in sequence, before you do anything else.

  • Ignition off, keys out. Turned on, the ignition can prime the system — and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank towards the parts it harms.
  • No diesel on top. More fuel in removes none of the petrol — it only leaves you with more of the same blend.
  • Make the car easy to see before anything else — hazards on — if there is moving traffic anywhere near you.
  • By hand, not under your engine: that is how it comes off the petrol pump. Get the forecourt attendants to help you push, whatever the mileage.
  • The first question we will ask is which fuel went in and about how much — and your receipt shows both. Keep it.

Still on the move when you realised? Come off the Moreton Spur at the next exit if that's where you are, under 15 miles from Tan-yr-allt, and stop somewhere safe instead of pushing on to the services. Then begin at stage one.

Tan-yr-allt fuel drain: has your motor run yet, or not?

Everything after this stage rests on one answer.

If it has not once been started:

  • Nowhere but that tank: that's where that petrol still is.
  • Draining and flushing, on the spot, is usually all of it.
  • Step one counts for exactly this reason: it is the best position to be in.

Engine run, however briefly?

  • Some petrol has left that tank already, passed through the filter, and got into your lines.
  • Run it farther and the petrol reaches the fuel injectors, having passed through your pump first.
  • The job grows with the miles — lines rinsed, filter sorted, occasionally more.

Diesel keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors oiled as it goes through them. Petrol gives them nothing, and that's why the line is drawn there. In the tank, left alone, petrol does no harm. Pump the petrol, though, and it grinds down the very parts doing the moving.

Calling about petrol in a diesel from Tan-yr-allt: what to have prepared

A technician that circles against a van that finds you: a little planning is the difference.

  • Your location: a postcode beginning LL19 8 works best.
  • The street or the car park. A road name helps — Ffordd Bryniau, or wherever you have pulled up.
  • Name a car park by what it serves — the one at Spar, for example — and it's far quicker to find.
  • Tell us what your vehicle is — make, model — and confirm it is diesel.
  • Which got in matters: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, and Tan-yr-allt has a page just for that. So tell us.
  • The quantity: the receipt's litres, or else how long you held the nozzle in.
  • Whether it's run. Then if it has, how far plus how heavily.
  • Settle who has the vehicle before our technicians get there: some hire and company contracts want the owner to authorise the work, and doing it quicker first.

Whilst you wait for a fuel drain around Tan-yr-allt

Help, however well meant, is what does the harm while you wait. So stick to these.

  • Safety before the vehicle. If it has stopped somewhere unsafe, get yourself away from the traffic then wait away from it. If it is safe where it stands, stay with it.
  • Nobody starts it. Not a passer-by being helpful, not to check it is all right, not to roll it a few yards.
  • Additives stay in the boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil take none of that petrol out again.
  • No DIY emptying. Siphoning petrol into a can at the kerbside is hazardous, and it leaves the fuel that has already gone beyond the tank.
  • Not for the radio, not for your windows: your ignition stays off.

The fuel drain, step by step, after the van arrives

  • First, three queries: which fuel got in, the quantity, and has it run? Those replies decide the job, and so the quote follows them.
  • Out of the tank comes the contaminated mix: that tank is drained.
  • If it ran, your lines are holding petrol that has shifted beyond that tank — so they are rinsed.
  • Cleaned, or replaced if your car has a serviceable one: your filter is seen to next.
  • Fresh diesel goes in, and your system is primed.
  • The start. With clean diesel in and the fuel system primed, it is started and tested to make sure it runs correctly.

Until it runs on clean diesel, our technicians stay with it. When it has been noticed early, lasting damage is very unusual, and your car returns to normal use straight away.

Once the fuel drain is done: driving around Tan-yr-allt a second time

  • After it has been started on clean fuel, there's nothing special to do: drive normally.
  • The first miles are the test. A dash warning, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a flat throttle is your signal to stop and call us again.
  • The work may come up later with a hire firm, an insurer or a fleet manager. Hold on to the paperwork.
  • Next time, check the petrol pump. The label, not the colour of its handle.
