Petrol in a Diesel Car in Tanners

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, all over Tanners and the remainder of Greater Manchester. The first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. When your engine has not been started and the petrol is still inside your tank, a drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much went in. Phone before anything else happens, and you'll know what comes next.

What to try now about petrol in a diesel

  • Don't start the vehicle — and do not trust it when it fires up. That is the thing most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor fed diesel typically just can't run, so the motorist stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel fed petrol usually starts, idles and drives off perfectly well for a few miles. It's not fine. It is wearing that fuel system whenever you drive.
  • Leave the car's ignition alone as well. Diesel performs two tasks: it burns, and before it ignites it greases your high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Flicking your ignition on is commonly sufficient to prime the system, which pulls that petrol out of the tank and into precisely those components.
  • Do not weaken it. Diesel poured on top removes nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The grade makes no difference.
  • A car that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to deal with, and so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Dundee Lane? Hazards on, then keep it there. An awkward place works for us better than a started diesel.
  • A van turning up instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts BL0 9, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Keep both ready before you ring.
  • Phone 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, about how many litres, plus if the car has fired. Those three answers shape your whole call-out.

On the forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

The work kicks off at the pump, mostly. Regularly the work wraps up on site as well. The drain generally gets done right there. Still on the forecourt at EG On the Move? Given the station's permission, that is somewhere our engineers work, and regularly.

At the forecourt, it is stopped with your motor never fired, and no place else does that. Our technicians can still sort it out where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been started and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a disaster, although the flush then has to reach past that tank to your lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for your key are what determine that.

Clear of the pump, the next motorist can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel it. Well worth doing. Cranking it just for four vehicle lengths? Never.

Will our technicians serve your part of Tanners?

Tanners is a residential suburb, and our team are out to the town and to the villages by it on the same rounds: Carr, Holcombe, Ramsbottom, Tagg Wood and Hazelhurst.

There are pages for the majority of towns around Greater Manchester, and the ones named above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being absent from that list means nothing about whether we come. Call us and check instead of guessing — boundaries particularly, and wherever your satnav can get wrong.

That map shows the area this page includes. We work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of it, and your car does not need to travel to us.

Twenty to nine. Outside Emmanuel Holcombe Church of England Primary School. Late already, and the receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Turn the hazard lights on, leave the engine alone, and phone. You could think three miles is nothing, in the Ford Focus or anything else — except that fuel is supplied on demand, and a run taken in a rush needs a great deal of it.

Simple job, this one — until somebody drives it home. A diesel Dacia Duster left at The Rose and Crown with petrol in that tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, so leave the vehicle then ring us once it is light. Expect a query about the run there, though. Short and cold is precisely where petrol struggles to burn, and what will not burn can slip past the rings then into the sump.

Out there normal, back sluggish. If that was the trip to Grants Nursery, look at that tank. Diesel gets weakened by petrol, and thin fuel slips past the fine clearances meant to build injection pressure — so every extra mile the diesel BMW 5 Series covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere safe, switch off, ring us.

Pulled off the forecourt, read your receipt, and left your diesel Mercedes A-Class up near Emmanuel a few hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Phone us then leave it off. The short distance truly helps, but it was still a start and a drive, so weakened fuel has reached the fuel filter and your pump — which is why our technicians purge the fuel lines instead of only draining the tank.

The filter, your lines, the pump and its rail: that is where that mix is once a diesel has run, and it doesn't come back out with the tank contents. So that tank is not where most of the problem waits by this point, and a diesel Audi Q5 that got near Ramsbottom Community Church needs your circuit flushed instead of drained.

Roadside stops across Tanners

Some people have no safe spot to stop at all. If you worked it out after setting off and landed along the verge of Milton Street, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that's a normal call for us and not a rare one.

Whether you sit with the car or move away from it hangs on if sitting in it looks sensible. Do not fire it up to reach a better place. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mixture deeper into the system. Our van driving to an awkward spot is no trouble for us, and it is far better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Petrol in a diesel, but your car has gone

under a mile from Tanners, the M66 is what counts here. A loss of power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, instead of a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you ring. It alters what our technicians bring.

Tanners itself

Tanners is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated on the riverside with nearby settlements including Carr, Holcombe, and Ramsbottom. Tanners has a population of around 3773 people and is characterised by predominantly terraced housing. Tanners is located approximately 11.6 miles from Salford and 174.3 miles from London, at an elevation of 197 metres. Tanners forms a small part of the larger urban landscape of the North West region.

The visit in Tanners, step by step

  • Three things get established before any price — your fuel that was put in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • Away goes the polluted mixture.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that created any of this.
  • Your system gets primed, on fresh diesel.
  • Your engine is fired up and tested to confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

That has your car ready to pull away. Everything is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught early, permanent damage is very rare.

Tanners AdBlue removal is a different job

Don't fire it up: that first rule holds whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this fault itself. The lubrication a fuel system depends on gets taken away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel. AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and residue in its place.

Our technicians deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Tanners has its own page with the full story — including why it's frequently the more serious of the two.

Tanners costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Our engineers cannot put one price on this page frankly, since this job is not one job. What changes it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.
  • How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much the tank holds.
  • Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's sensible for our van.

Tell us what the car is, how much got in, and whether your engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range. Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is fine for that.

Tanners drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Tanners?

Yes, and it's where a large part of this work takes place. Often, provided the site agrees: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that spot is something our technicians answer on the spot.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the engine has run matters far more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mixture sucked through it.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off. Driving moves the issue along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly helpful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no change at all. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No. Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

No. Our engineers drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a main dealer.

Is the car still with you?

The engine remains off.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere safe, switch it off and leave it off. Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best place available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.
