Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Tavern Quay? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Tavern Quay and the rest of Greater London. The first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. While your engine has not yet run and the petrol is still inside your tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much was put in. Contact us before anything else starts, and you will know what follows from there.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do first

  • Don't crank it — and don't trust it if it fires up. Here is the thing most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor filled with diesel normally just cannot run, and so the person stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel fed petrol usually starts, idles and drives off quite happily for a few miles. It isn't fine. It's wearing out your fuel system while you drive.
  • Leave your ignition off too. Diesel performs two roles: it burns, and before it burns it greases the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Turning your ignition on is often all it takes to prime your system, which draws the petrol out of that tank and into precisely those parts.
  • Never pour diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage as that advice presumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it only hands you a fuller tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to sort out, and we would sooner travel to a difficult spot than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on Rope Street, put those hazards on then leave the car there.
  • Check where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts SE16 7, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of showing up.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three points — what got in, about how many litres, and whether the motor has been run. Those responses settle whatever follows.

Phone before you move it. Petrol into a diesel Skoda Octavia this morning, and the car outside Canada Water ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel sitting in a tank is dormant, and any wear was done on the run in, when your pump was taking diesel that petrol had diluted.

Petrol in your BMW 3 Series, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you at China Ark Market, somewhere in Tavern Quay? Then phone us, and leave the motor out of it — not even to exit that spot. A technician heads your way. Tank emptied, fuel lines cleaned, clean diesel in, and home you go. Easy throttle over a mile uses very little, and so these are often the simple cases.

Our technicians clean the fuel lines rather than only clearing that tank, and the reason is that thinned fuel has already arrived at your filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The hop truly assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Citroen C3 parked up close to Surrey Docks Watersports Centre a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Phone us and leave it off.

Authorisation first, where there's a hire firm or a company behind the vehicle — some agreements insist on it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, phone us about your diesel Kia Sportage by James Walker. You'll not know how full your tank was. Barely anybody does, two days into a motor, and it gets worked out on site regardless. Our technicians ask since the damage petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in an almost empty tank make a much stronger mix than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is built to resist igniting under pressure, which is precisely what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more your engine knocks and smokes and flattens off.

No warning light exists for this, which is why motors in that position normally get driven a second time before anybody phones. Do not be one of them. The throttle went limp and the idle turned ragged after a few streets, and the diesel Volkswagen Polo is now sitting by Osprey Estate hall. Softness there means fuel that cannot build pressure correctly instead of a motor giving up. Switch off. Call us.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Tavern Quay

Can petrol be taken out of your diesel at a forecourt?

A good portion of this job is completed at a forecourt, since that's where it often begins. If you're still on the forecourt at Tesco, that's typically where the drain gets done — we work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's consent.

A forecourt is the single spot this gets stopped before the motor has started. Fuel drawn out of your tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the motor is started and the vehicle is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and the lines together with your tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and we deal with it where the car is. What settles it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was read.

The staff will generally offer to move the car out from the pump so the next driver can get past. That's worth doing. Cranking the car just for four car lengths? Don't.

Areas we cover in Tavern Quay

Surrey Quays, Rotherhithe, Millwall, Isle of Dogs, Cubitt Town — every one of these on the rounds that bring us across to Tavern Quay too, a neighbourhood.

There are dedicated pages for the majority of locations around Greater London, and the ones listed above are simply the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from the list means nothing about whether our engineers come. Phone to enquire instead of guessing, above all when you're on the border or anywhere a satnav gets wrong.

This map shows the area this page spans. All of that is territory our technicians serve: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not drive your vehicle anywhere.

Stuck at the kerbside somewhere in Tavern Quay?

Not everybody gets a chance to pull in anywhere suitable. If you worked it out after setting off and landed by the verge of Sweden Gate, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights flashing, that's a common call for us rather than an odd one.

Fine where you are? Sit beside it. Not okay? Move out and clear of it. Don't start up your motor to limp it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mixture further into your fuel system. Carrying on causes the vehicle far more harm than our van driving out to an awkward place, and that is no bother for us.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

under 10 miles from Tavern Quay, your M11 is what matters here. A loss of power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Come off at the next safe exit, switch off, and don't start it to move it. Long run? Anything approaching the under 3 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the contamination. Say that on the call, as it affects what goes in the van.

All about Tavern Quay

Tavern Quay is a locality in the London Borough of Southwark, situated on the southern bank of the River Thames at an elevation of around 6 metres. Tavern Quay sits adjacent to Surrey Quays and Rotherhithe, with Millwall to the east, and is characterized by its lakeside setting and predominantly flat-type housing. Tavern Quay is located approximately 2.7 miles from central London, making it a relatively close residential area to the city centre.

When our technicians reach you around Tavern Quay: what we do

  • We establish what was put in, how much, and if your engine has run. The answers change the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing.
  • The tank is cleared completely.
  • What is left in the system shouldn't be what caused the issue, so the lines get flushed and your filter cleared.
  • Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.
  • It is started with new diesel in it, and we make sure that it's running properly.

After that it's ready to pull away. There's no need to go to a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's noticed quickly, long-term damage is very rare.

AdBlue in a diesel tank in Tavern Quay is a separate matter

Never crank it: that first instruction applies whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is this fault itself. Petrol thins your diesel and takes away the protection your fuel system relies on. Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and deposits.

We handle both, and AdBlue removal in Tavern Quay has its own page with the full story — including why it is often the more serious of the two.

How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Tavern Quay?

One figure would not be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

  • Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the big one.
  • How much of the wrong fuel went in, set against how much that tank can hold.
  • Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.
  • Where the car is, and whether a van can sensibly reach and work on it.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range. For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and isn't pressing, works too.

Petrol in diesel questions from Tavern Quay motorists

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Tavern Quay?

A fair share of this work gets done there, so yes. Regularly, provided the site agrees: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that place is something we answer there and then.

How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run. Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through your fuel system.

I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of that tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable much more commonly than drivers fear.

Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to stay off.

Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a different problem from a bygone era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores. The pump still has to put up with it, as that tank still has petrol in it after that.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

You, and the car, still together?

Turned off is how the car remains.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off and keep it off. Cold and parked, a car is in the best position available — and people fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
