Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Teddington?

If you have not turned on the motor yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a motor requires while the petrol is still inside your tank and your engine has not yet been started, which is why it is the coming few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel comes to your car wherever it has stopped in Teddington or the rest of Greater London, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. Ring us before all else starts, and you'll learn what follows next.

Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

  • While you drive, your pump and the injectors wear. That is why you do not fire it up, and why you do not rely on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel especially — the part most people get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine generally will not run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you carry on.
  • Diesel ignites, and before it burns it lubricates — the high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone as well: turning it on is commonly enough to prime the system, and priming carries petrol from that tank into just those parts.
  • Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies — so don't put diesel on top to water down it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • A vehicle that has never moved is the quickest one to deal with, so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Elmfield Avenue? Hazards on, and leave the vehicle there. An awkward location suits us better than a started engine.
  • Keep your whereabouts ready before you call. A postcode beginning TW11 8 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between the van arriving and the van circling.
  • Dial 0333 366 0103. Let us know what went in, about how much, plus if your car has started. These three details determine the entire job.

Can petrol be pumped from your diesel on a forecourt?

A fair share of this job gets finished at a pump, as that is where it mostly begins. Our technicians work on station forecourts routinely, with the site's consent, so if you're still at NPL Hydrogen Station that is generally where the drain takes place.

No place other than a garage can it be caught with the engine still untouched. Fuel sucked out of that tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the motor is started and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the lines together with that tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and we deal with it where the car is. What settles it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

The attendants will generally happily push the vehicle away from the petrol pump so the next driver can get through. That's worth doing. Firing the car just to move four car lengths is not.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Teddington

The call our engineers want goes like this: diesel BMW 3 Series, some litres of unleaded, done a couple of miles, now shut off outside M&S Simply Food. What we are actually asking is how much fuel your pump has drawn — not how long ago it was.

Move the car out of the gateway and fix it later — that's what a passer-by will say, and it's wrong. Parked on the zig-zags outside St Mary's and St Peter's Church of England Primary School, a wrongly fuelled diesel Audi A4 is a nuisance and nothing worse. Restarted three more times for politeness, it's no longer a tank problem but a fuel system one, as priming takes place with every start and more petrol goes through the filter towards your pump. Let people moan. Call us.

None of it is your engine failing. That's the bit worth hearing, and it's why the usual Teddington Library Garden call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Vauxhall Astra drives out there without a murmur, comes back with the power gone, your idle uneven and possibly a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the close-fitting components it runs through; petrol thins it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing your fuel to hold pressure instead of only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built bleeds past clearances, delivery arrives weaker and later and less even than built, and all of that stops once your fuel is corrected.

Leave the Ford Kuga by Christ Church Hall and phone us. We are blunt about not driving on because a wearing pump sheds, and what it sheds travels onward with your fuel to your injectors further along.

It got a few streets and stopped. The throttle went soft, the idle turned uneven, and the diesel Kia Sportage is now waiting by Teddington Library. That deadness is your fuel failing to build pressure correctly instead of your engine failing — and as there is no warning light for it, motors in that position generally get driven again before anybody rings. Do not. Switch it off then phone us.

Teddington and the areas beside it

Strawberry Hill, Fulwell, Ham, Hampton Hill, Hampton Wick — all of these on our journeys that take us across to Teddington too, a small village.

If yours is not on that list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are pages for most places in Greater London, and the ones listed above are simply the immediate neighbours. Ring us and check rather than presuming — borders particularly, and anywhere your satnav might struggle with.

The map shows the patch the page includes. Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of it is territory our technicians work on, and none of that asks your vehicle to come to us.

Broken down on the roadside in Teddington

The opportunity to stop somewhere suitable doesn't come to everyone. If you noticed after setting off and finished up on the verge of High Street, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that's a normal call for us and not a rare one.

Out of the vehicle if it's not sensible to sit inside, by it when it is. It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the trouble: restart it to get to somewhere safer and that mix goes further into your fuel system with every mile travelled. However difficult the spot, it is no problem for us to get to it, and that is much better for the car than driving on.

Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Your M3 is the one which counts here, and sits under 5 miles from Teddington. Lost power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, instead of a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the next exit that's safe, pull up there, and don't start the vehicle to reposition. It alters what our technicians bring, and so tell us when you ring: on a longer trip — anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors.

About Teddington

Teddington is a locality in southwest London, situated on the River Thames at an elevation of around 12 metres. Teddington lies approximately 10 miles from central London and is close to nearby places such as Strawberry Hill, Fulwell, and Ham. Teddington has a population of around 7211 people and is characterised by predominantly terraced housing. Teddington's riverside setting has influenced its development and appearance.

What comes next when our engineers get to you around Teddington

  • The answers alter the work, which is why we ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of it, and if your engine has run.
  • Out flows the polluted fuel.
  • What is left in your system shouldn't be what caused the trouble, and so the fuel lines get purged and the filter cleared.
  • We put fresh diesel in and prime the fuel system.
  • It's started with new diesel in it, and we confirm that it is running properly.

At that point it is ready to drive away. All of this is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been caught early, lasting damage is very rare.

AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Teddington?

The problem isn't the same, though the first step is — never fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol. The lubrication a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel. AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Our technicians handle both, and AdBlue removal around Teddington has its own page with the details — including why it's often the more significant of the two.

Teddington prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Frankly, no single number belongs on a page like this. This job differs. Here's what varies it:

  • Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.
  • How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much your tank holds.
  • Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.
  • Whether a van can sensibly get to your vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the vehicle is.

Tell us your car, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range. Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is ideal for that.

Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Teddington

At a petrol station in Teddington, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it is where a big part of this work takes place. Our engineers visit BP and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the site's consent — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there.

A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your engine has run counts a lot more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres. An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, of course. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mixture pulled through it.

Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Stop somewhere safe, turn off, and keep it off. Driving is what shifts the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it is recoverable a lot more commonly than people assume, and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out properly, draining and flushing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it. Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever the vehicle is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.

Is your vehicle still with you?

Shut off is how it remains.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, switch off, and let it remain that way. Cold and still, a motor is in the best place available — and drivers fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
