Petrol in Diesel

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Teemore? Don't Start It

If you have not fired up the motor as yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a vehicle requires while the petrol is still sitting in your tank and the motor has not yet turned over, which is why it's the coming few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has stopped in Teemore or the remainder of County Fermanagh, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there. One ring our way is plenty: we will explain what follows after this. Do it right away.

What to do next about petrol in a diesel

  • Do not crank it. Started regardless? Then never depend on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle generally can't run, so the person stops and the damage ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It pulls away happily, for a few miles. People get that reversed. It isn't fine — the fuel system is grinding every mile you do.
  • Switching the car's ignition on often primes that system, and priming is what draws petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the ignition off.
  • That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It will not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.
  • Stay still if it is safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on South Crescent, anywhere — an odd spot for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to handle than a car that never shifted.
  • Before you dial, work out your location. Anything closest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode that starts BT92 9 — that's what decides whether the technician shows up or circles.
  • What was put in, roughly how much, and whether your car has run — the three replies determine the full job. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Can petrol be pumped out of your diesel on a forecourt?

Most of the work begins at a forecourt, so a fair chunk of it is completed on site. Our technicians work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the owner's consent, and so if you're still at the nearest petrol station that is normally where the drain takes place.

Before the motor has fired — a garage is the single spot this gets stopped. The few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the keys settle how much requires cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as that tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still put it right where the car stands.

Staff will usually chip in pushing it clear of the pump, which lets the next driver get through. Welcome the assistance. Firing the car over four car lengths? Not a chance.

Mobile fuel drain van at a diesel car in Teemore

Petrol in the Renault Clio, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you outside the local shops, somewhere in Teemore? Then phone, and leave the motor out of that — not even to leave that space. Somebody heads your way. Tank emptied, fuel lines cleaned, new diesel in, and home you go. Easy throttle over a mile draws hardly anything, and so these are often the simple jobs.

Your diesel BMW 3 Series will have felt completely usual on the way back from the local primary school. They all do, and that's the snag with petrol in a diesel instead of the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol car and it generally won't run, so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it fires up, ticks over and moves off as though nothing has happened — all the while your high-pressure pump works without the protection the fuel is supposed to be providing. Nothing tells you, because from behind the wheel there's nothing to alert you about. Phone with approximately how far you went and how hard you pushed it; the second answer counts more than the first.

We rinse your lines instead of only emptying that tank, and the reason is that thinned fuel has already reached the fuel filter and your pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The drive truly assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Vauxhall Astra parked up close to the centre a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once the motor has turned. Phone us and leave it off.

A throttle gone soft, white smoke, a ragged idle, clattering: that's a wrongly fuelled diesel Audi A6 telling you what's wrong. Don't restart the car to find a better spot — turn off where you have stopped, by a street just off the centre or anywhere else.

Drain it and put new diesel in — that's the tip you will get, typically from somebody confident, and it's only half right. Do exactly that to a diesel Ford Kuga close to the far end of the built-up part and it would start, which is what makes the advice sound reasonable. What takes place next is the trouble: the motor straight away pulls the petrol left waiting in your filter and the feed lines straight back through the pump, since emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Call us instead. Our engineers flush the circuit and take the fuel filter off where the vehicle has a working one, which is the difference between the vehicle being put right and the vehicle only starting.

Do we reach your side of Teemore?

Teemore is a small village, and we are out to it and to the areas around it on the usual runs: Derryvore, Derrylin, Kinawley, Donagh and Newtownbutler.

Our technicians still come. Those places above are only the closest neighbours, and a page exists for most towns around County Fermanagh, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage. Call us and enquire rather than assuming — borders particularly, and anywhere the satnav tends to get wrong.

Look at this map for the patch included here. Our technicians work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of that, and your vehicle does not need to come to us.

Kerbside call-outs across Teemore

Some drivers have no sensible place to stop whatsoever. Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Dunskey Street since you realised after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it is the ordinary kind.

Clear of your car while it's not sensible to sit there, by it if it is. It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the problem: start it up to reach somewhere safer and the blend goes further into the system with every mile travelled. A technician driving to a tricky location is no problem for us, and it's a lot better for your car than driving on.

A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

This is where the M77 comes in — over 50 miles away from Teemore. A loss of power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Get off at the next safe exit, turn off, and don't start it to reposition. It alters what our technicians bring, and so say so when you ring: on a longer run — anything close to the under 50 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and the injectors.

Where's Teemore?

Teemore is a small locality in County Fermanagh, situated inland at an elevation of 54 metres. Teemore lies near the villages of Derryvore, Derrylin, and Kinawley, and is approximately 37.8 miles from Armagh. Teemore has a population of around 528 people, predominantly living in detached housing.

What happens when our engineers get to you around Teemore

  • Our technicians ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has the engine run? Those replies alter what the work really is.
  • Your tank is cleared of it.
  • Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.
  • The fuel system gets primed, on new diesel.
  • We turn it on and check it runs smoothly on new diesel.

That leaves the car ready to pull away. We do all of it wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a garage, and if it has been caught soon, it is very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.

A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Teemore

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening instruction is the same — don't start it — yet this issue is not. Petrol weakens the diesel and strips the lubrication your fuel system relies on. Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Teemore page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Teemore

One price would not be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

  • Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.
  • Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's safe for a van.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and if it has run. Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

Teemore motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Teemore?

Much of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes. Often, provided the site consents: another forecourt nearby, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something we answer there and then.

How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it counts if anything has been run. A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that blend drawn through it.

I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What next?

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop. Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable far more often than drivers assume.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It is not a change, so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no respite from it.

Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

You, and the vehicle, still together?

Turned off is the way it stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle later. Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Drivers fear this far more than they need to.

Throughout County Fermanagh and in Teemore: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
