Petrol in Diesel

Temple Cloud: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on your engine yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car needs while the fuel is still sitting in that tank and the engine has not yet been started, which is why it's the coming few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has ended up in Temple Cloud or the rest of Somerset, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there. Just one call to us will be plenty: we shall show you what follows after this. Make it right away.

The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

  • Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will typically refuse to run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it moves off — all right for a couple of miles. People have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't start the vehicle. And having started, don't believe it: your fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.
  • Leave your ignition alone as well. Diesel has two jobs: it burns, and before it burns it lubricates the injection pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Switching the ignition on is commonly all it takes to prime the system, which draws this petrol out of your tank and into exactly those parts.
  • Topping up gets rid of nothing. It gives you a larger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage the way that advice presumes — so do not tip diesel on top to thin it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.
  • Stay put if it is sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Temple Inn Lane, anywhere — an odd place for us beats a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to handle than a vehicle that never shifted.
  • Before you ring, get your whereabouts. Anything nearest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts BS39 5 — that is what settles whether the van turns up or circles.
  • What was put in, about how many litres, plus if the motor has fired — those three replies decide the full call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

At a forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

A fair share of the job gets done at a pump, because that's where it mostly kicks off. We work on garage forecourts all the time, with the owner's agreement, so if you are still at Texaco that is typically where the drain happens.

At a forecourt, it is halted with the engine never fired, and no place else manages it. The few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the keys settle how much requires flushing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and your filter need rinsing as well as your tank. It's not a disaster, and our engineers can still put it right where the vehicle sits.

Away from the pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the staff help you push the car. Well worth doing. Moving it four spaces does not merit firing the engine.

Coverage near Temple Cloud

Cholwell, Cameley, Clutton, White Cross, Hallatrow — all of these on our trips that bring us across to Temple Cloud itself, a village.

Not on this list? It means nothing. The places above are just the closest few, and most places across Somerset have a page of their own elsewhere on our site. Contact us and enquire rather than guessing, above all when you are on a boundary or somewhere your phone misreads.

The area this page spans is on the map. Our technicians work at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of that, and the vehicle never needs to travel to us.

Twenty to nine. At the gates of Cameley CEVC Primary School. Late already, and the receipt in your hand says unleaded. Switch the hazards on, leave the motor alone, then call us. You might think three miles is nothing, in your Dacia Duster or anything else — except that fuel is metered on demand, and a dash taken in a rush demands a great deal of it.

Your Peugeot 3008 stays where it is in the car park at The Temple Inn for the whole job, which typically goes like this. First our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since, given that most of the work turns on those replies. Your tank is emptied of the polluted mix, the lines are rinsed, and the filter comes off if it's a replaceable one. With new diesel in and your system bled, the vehicle is started and tested, and once it is running properly you pull away.

Happy on the way out, sluggish on the way back. If that is how the run to Temple Cloud Cricket Club went, the tank is the place to look. Petrol weakens diesel, and thinner fuel seeps past the tightly fitted parts that are supposed to build injection pressure — so the further the BMW 5 Series went, the less well it held that pressure. Pull in somewhere safe, turn off and phone us.

About as well as this goes, once the motor has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Vauxhall Astra left by Saint Barnabas hardly two streets on. Ring us, then leave it off. A short drive does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so the fuel filter and the pump have had weakened fuel through them — hence purging the fuel lines rather than only draining your tank.

Hire car? Company car? Phone them before us. Some agreements want the firm to sign off the work, and that's much faster dealt with up front than later on. Then ring us about the Audi Q5, the diesel one, near Temple Cloud Village Hall. Do not worry that you cannot say how full that tank was — almost no one can two days into a motor, and it's something our technicians work out on the spot. The reason for asking: harm from petrol in a diesel is a matter of ratio. A few litres in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mixture than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of it, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mix, more rattling, more smoke, flatter throttle.

Roadside call-outs across Temple Cloud

Some people find no safe spot to pull in whatsoever. A common call for us rather than an unusual one: realised after setting off, finished up by the verge of Paulmont Rise or at a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.

Safe right there? Wait by it. Not fine? Move out and clear of it. Never start it up to get to a better location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mix deeper into the system. Driving on does the car far more harm than a technician heading out to an inconvenient location, and that's no bother for us.

A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

under 10 miles from Temple Cloud, the M32 is what counts here. Lost power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they come, rather than a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Never restart it to reposition. Get off at the next sensible junction and switch off. Long drive? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the call, as it alters what goes in the van.

What comes next when we get to you in Temple Cloud

  • Three things get established before any quote — your fuel that got in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.
  • Our engineers empty the tank of all the contaminated mixture.
  • Our engineers flush the fuel lines and clean your filter, so what is remaining in the system isn't what started the problem.
  • The system gets bled, on new diesel.
  • It's started with clean diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it is running smoothly.

That has the car ready to drive away. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been noticed early, and because everything is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Temple Cloud

The issue isn't the same, though the first instruction is — never start it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol. Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol. Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Our technicians handle both, and AdBlue removal around Temple Cloud has its own page with the full story — including why it's often the more significant of the two.

What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs around Temple Cloud

What shifts the figure is listed below, as the job is not one job and our technicians cannot frankly put a single number on this page.

  • This is the main one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.
  • The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.
  • AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.
  • Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's safe for a van.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and whether it has run. Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

Things our engineers hear about petrol in diesel around Temple Cloud

Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Temple Cloud?

Plenty of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes. Often, provided the site agrees: Murco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that spot is something we answer there and then.

Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the proportion rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that blend has been pulled through the fuel system.

Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. Driving is what shifts the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable much more frequently than people expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain and flush carried out correctly is not an alteration and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty. A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate issue and it doesn't replace what petrol has thinned. Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to bring it to a dealership, as our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is.

You, and your vehicle, still together?

Don't switch the engine on again.

Switch it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.
