Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ten Acres
Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Ten Acres and the remainder of West Midlands. The first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. While your engine has not yet turned over and the fuel is still sitting in your tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much was put in. Ring us and then our team shall explain what comes next before you try any more.
Petrol in a diesel: what to try now
- Don't fire it up — and do not believe it when it does start. That is the part motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor given diesel typically just won't run, and so the person stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, idles and drives off quite happily for several miles. It's not okay. It's eating into that fuel system whenever you drive.
- Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it lubricates — the injection pump, those injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave your ignition off also: flicking it on is usually enough to prime your system, and priming draws petrol from the tank into exactly those parts.
- Topping up takes out nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies — so don't tip diesel on top to thin it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.
- Sit tight if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Pershore Road, anywhere — a tricky spot for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a car that never moved.
- A van turning up instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts B30 2, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Keep both prepared before you phone.
- What was put in, roughly how much, and also whether the car has started — those three facts determine the entire visit. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.
The high-pressure pump spent that morning drive running on a liquid that had shed a great deal of the protection it is built around. Diesel lubricates that pump, and your injectors with it, before any of your fuel burns; petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. So imagine a diesel BMW 3 Series, topped up at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and parked standing outside Pineapple Road until it dawns on you around eleven. Three hours of standing have altered nothing about it. The couple of miles before that changed a lot, which is why the thing our engineers ask you is about miles rather than hours. Call us. Leave the car precisely where it sits.
The enquiry we hope for runs like this: diesel Ford Focus, a few litres of unleaded, run a couple of miles, now turned off at Lidl. What we're really asking is how much fuel your pump has pulled — not how long ago it was.
The parts that should be getting protected are wearing down instead, and the motor gives no sign of it: a diesel on a diluted tank fires up and pulls away perfectly well. Chance the journey home from The Bournbrook Inn? Don't. Phone then leave the Peugeot 3008 where it is.
Do not drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse while your car stands, as a diesel Audi A3 parked at the green space at the edge of the village is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.
A motor you picked up two days ago gets driven further before anyone spots anything, which is the hire and courtesy fault in one sentence — and how far it went is what determines the volume of petrol reaching the fuel injectors. Nothing careless about the mistake itself: a newer diesel filler neck accepts the slimmer petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, so unfamiliar places see most of these. Phone us from wherever you are, by Stirchley Community Church or not, and we'll head to the Citroen C3.
Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel
A large part of this job gets done at a pump, since that is where it often begins. We work on garage forecourts routinely, with the station's consent, and so if you are still at Mary Vale Service Station that is typically where the drain gets done.
Nowhere else but a garage can it be caught with your engine still untouched. We can still put it right where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to go past your tank to your lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for the keys are what settle that.
Staff will normally help out pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get past. Accept the help. Starting it over four car lengths? Never.
Ten Acres and the areas beside it
Those same runs bring us to Selly Park, Stirchley, Moor Green, Bournbrook and Bournville along with Ten Acres, which is a residential suburb.
If yours isn't on that list it does not mean we never come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of places across West Midlands, and the ones named above are merely the closest neighbours. Presuming is the habit to resist, especially on a boundary or anywhere a satnav struggles. Contact us to check.
The area the page covers sits on this map. We operate roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of it, and your vehicle does not need to come to us.
Stranded at the roadside in Ten Acres
A chance to stop somewhere suitable does not fall to everybody. If you noticed after setting off and landed along the verge beside Ribblesdale Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that's a routine call for us instead of an odd one.
Okay there? Remain with it. Not okay? Get out and clear of it. Do not restart your engine to nurse it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mixture further into the system. A van coming to an inconvenient place is no bother for us, and it's a lot better for your car than pressing on.
Run it already? Stop, then read below
under 5 miles out of Ten Acres, the Frankley Services Southbound is what counts now. It will usually take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels rarely give you one of those.
The first sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone. On a longer trip — anything close to the under 5 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors, and tell us when you call. It changes what our technicians bring.
All about Ten Acres
Ten Acres is a suburban area in the West Midlands, situated near the River Rea and close to the city of Birmingham. Ten Acres has a mix of housing types, but is predominantly characterized by terraced homes. Once our engineers get to you in Ten Acres: what we do
- Our technicians ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your engine run? Those replies change what the work actually is.
- Away comes the polluted fuel.
- Fuel lines are purged through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.
- Bleeding the system follows, once clean diesel is in.
- Our engineers fire it up and check it runs correctly on clean diesel.
Then it's ready to pull away. Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been caught quickly, and because all of this is done where your car is, it never needs to go to a workshop.
A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Ten Acres
AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — the motor remains off — whereas the fault beneath it's a distinct one altogether. Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol. Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.
Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Ten Acres page. Both are ours to handle.
How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Ten Acres?
Frankly, no single figure fits on a page like this. This job varies. Here's what varies it:
- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.
- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that ratio.
- The kind of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.
- Whether a technician can safely get to the vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.
The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear and not as a range. If it is not urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.
Ten Acres motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel
Fuel drains on a Ten Acres petrol station forecourt
Yes — forecourts are where a fair part of this takes place. Our technicians attend BP and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the station's permission — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there.
How much petrol is too much for a diesel?
Whether your engine has run counts a lot more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres. Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that mix has been drawn through the system.
I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?
Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that. It is salvageable a lot more often than drivers expect, even though driving is what moves the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.
Will a fuel drain void my warranty?
No. Carried out correctly, clearing and flushing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it. A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.
Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?
Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No. Later on? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.
Main dealers and petrol in a diesel
You do not need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.
Standing next to it?
Your engine stays off.
Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and let the vehicle stay that way. Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this much more than they need to.
