The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in The America Ground
Whatever you do, never switch the engine on, even briefly, to shift the car. Pause; leave the vehicle off. The next few minutes determine it more than anything else: petrol in a diesel still unrun usually comes down to draining and cleaning, on the spot. Anywhere you happen to be in The America Ground, this is how things run from here.
Minute one: petrol in a diesel, motor off
Do these before anything else, in this sequence.
- The keys out of your ignition. Turning the ignition on can be enough to prime the fuel system, while priming draws petrol out of your tank toward the components it damages. Keep the vehicle off completely.
- Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel takes out nothing. You are left with a bigger tank of the same mixture.
- Hazards on. If you're anywhere near moving traffic, make the car easy to see before you do anything else.
- By hand, never on your engine: that's how it comes off the petrol pump. Ask the forecourt attendants to help you push, however short the mileage.
- The first thing we will ask is which fuel went in and roughly how much — and the till receipt says both. Keep it.
Noticed on the move? Get off at the next junction if you are on the M20, under 25 miles from The America Ground, and pull over somewhere sensible — not at the services further on. Step one starts after that.
Has it run yet? The fork in every The America Ground fuel drain
From this stage on, everything comes down to a single answer.
Not run, not even briefly:
- Just that tank has petrol in it for now.
- Usually it's emptied and purged right where your car stands.
- No place is better, and it's why the first step counts so much.
Motor run, however for a moment?
- Petrol has been drawn from that tank, through the filter and into your lines.
- A bigger run carries it all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.
- Lines flushed, the filter dealt with, occasionally more: the job grows as the mileage does.
That line falls there because diesel protects your high-pressure pump and your injectors on its way through them — and petrol doesn't. Nothing is damaged by petrol that's only waiting in a tank. The components that move it are grinding the moment petrol is being pumped.
The America Ground, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call
A technician that circles versus a van that finds you: a little planning is what separates them.
- Your whereabouts: a postcode beginning TN34 1 serves best.
- Name the road — Robertson Passage or wherever you have stopped — or the car park.
- Car parks are found most easily by what they serve: tell us the one at Trinity Wholefoods, and it's easy.
- The car. Make, model, and that it is a diesel.
- Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has its own The America Ground page.
- Roughly how much — in litres from your receipt, or by how long the nozzle was in.
- If it has run, how far and how hard — as well as if it has run at all.
- Hire or company car? Some agreements need the owner's authorisation for the work, and getting it before we turn up is faster than after.
Ring 0333 366 0103 then. Email is fine too if it can wait, with the vehicle parked at home, going nowhere.
Whilst you wait for a fuel drain in The America Ground
Hold to these: well-intended help does the harm during the wait.
- Wait with your car if it's safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere exposed, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.
- No one starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll the vehicle a couple of yards.
- No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, anything from your boot — none of that takes the petrol back out.
- Siphoning petrol into a can at the kerbside is risky — and it also leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond that tank. Do not drain the vehicle yourself.
- Ignition remains off. Even for your radio or your windows.
The fuel drain, step by step, once our van arrives
- First, three queries: which fuel got in, the amount, and has it run? Those replies set the job, and so the quote follows them.
- That tank is cleared. The polluted mixture comes from that tank.
- Rinsing the lines comes next, since a car that ran has petrol past that tank, inside the lines themselves.
- Cleared, or changed if your car has a usable one: your filter is seen to next.
- Bleeding your system follows once fresh diesel is in.
- Starting up. When the system is bled with clean diesel, we start the engine and make sure it runs smoothly.
Only once it's running on clean diesel do our engineers go. The car returns to normal use right away, and long-term damage is very uncommon if it has been spotted quickly.
Once the fuel drain is done: driving around The America Ground again
- Drive normally. There's nothing special to do once it has been started on clean fuel.
- Give the first miles your attention. Smoke appearing, a warning light coming on, your idle going lumpy or your throttle stumbling: pull over and ring us back.
- The paperwork answers the query a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. Keep it.
- Read the label on the petrol pump next time, not the colour of its handle.
